He was one of the very best ever. His style of jazz was some of my favorite music.

I'll be listening to my local NPR station tonight for sure. They have a show called Jazz Nightly, and the guy who runs it is also a huge Brubeck fan. He'll probably play nothing else for the rest of the week.

It was amazing how in the 60s Brubeck "crossed over" to be a hit with the suburban/college audience. A first for instrumental jazz!

I once choreographed and performed a piece in 7/8 time to a Brubeck song entitled "The Unsquare Dance" or something like that. It was one of the more difficult things I've ever done. Dancers need a square 8 counts, and there weren't any in this piece, so nothing ever resolved and my weight was always on the wrong foot. The dance went up and down stairs and multiple levels on stage. It was terrific. A sad loss, indeed.

I heard Take Five as a high school kid and had to scrape up some money to go buy the album. Opened my eyes/ears/soul to something entirely different. It was life changing. That song was a good example of the right thing at the right time.

That somewhat prepared me for trying to learn to play Mahavishnu Orchestra, Weather Report, and Return to Forever Songs a few years later. Suddenly 5/4 was easy. :-)
