Consider that I'm 63 and a newby. ;)

I play an open A with 2nd & 3rd fingers pushing 3 strings.
I cheat with Fmaj7th allatime, Dm7, use Dsus2 when I shouldn't,
and the infamous two-finger B7... :p
Whatever woiks! |

Location: Boise, Idaho | Since you got to 63 your way, you can do what you want. I'm with OMA. I use 2 fingers, but I know a couple of good players, who grew up on power chords and barre chords, who play the open A with the ring finger, same as they'd do a barre B or C. |

Location: Portland, OR | Jimmie Rodgers played a lot of chords with his thumb. He was from Camas, Wa and made "Honeycomb" and other pop songs of the '50's. I saw him at school in the early '60's and never could figure out what he was playing. Maybe he was using the A form up and down the fretboard. |

Location: Fort Worth, Texas | I've had a lot of talk about "..the way I play an A..." over the years.
I play an 'Amaj' at the 'open' position like this:
_____
xo132o
Like a 'Dmaj' moved towards you and crammed onto the 2nd fret...
My fingers are just to big to play it like I was taught:
______
xo123o
I often, in the middle of a song, switch an 'Amaj' to the fifth fret barre chord 'E open position':
______
1----1
|||1||
|32|||
As far as using your thumb, whatever works and is comfortable and at ease for you.
I've been playing what I call my 'slop chord' on the fifth and seventh fret with my thumb and forefinger like this:
______
T||111
And it's fun!
Hope this makes sense. |

I first learned the standard 123 fingering for the A. A few years ago I got a book that suggested this fingering:
______
xo213o

It took a while to retrain myself, but it does make it easy to slide the index finger down to play the first position E chord. Just shows that there's more than one way to skin a cat.

Location: NW Washington State | G? What the heck is that? I only know A, D, and E. With a capo I can play in any key. I've heard about "bar chords", but I don't like to go to bars, I only play at home so I don't need 'em. |
