Sad to see most of the Ovation production gone, but all in all, things could have gone much worse for both brands after the Fender acquisition.

Location: Caribou, ME | I think we guitar nuts feel a lot of kinship with the factories that produce our favorite guitars. NOW anyways.... not years ago. And that only seems to apply to guitar stuff, not other items in our daily lives. We sit there for hours in the evening watching a Sanyo flat screen but we (probably) have no idea which factory made it... maybe we don't even know what country it was made. I've owned an '82 Ford pickup for 17 years and don't think twice about the fact it was made in Hamilton Ontario as opposed to Flint or Detroit or wherever. I was joking with the owner of the local music store yesterday about Guilds. "Where was my Guild made?" "Well, it depends on what WEEK it was made! Could be New York, Hoboken, Westerly, Corona, Tacoma, or Hartford!"
CBS bought Fender in January of 1965 but I'm betting the average player didn't know the difference and didn't care. I had no idea until a guy pointed out to me in 1976 that "If you're going to buy a Fender, make sure it doesn't have a big 'F' on the neck plate; those are no good!" (A notion I have since determined to be hogwash BTW. I've had bad pre-CBS, good CBS, and horrific post-CBS.)
Can you imagine if we were Epiphone fans in 1957 and found out they were sold to Gibson, basically for scrap, for $35,000? There would have been wailing and gnashing of teeth.
I don't accept change well, but I'm learning to pick my battles. They made enough O's from '66 to '07 so that we'll never run out. And if we win the lottery we can call the mothership and have them crank us out a few.

Well, I don't know about that...how many of us detour through Lynchburgh to tour the Jack Daniels distillery? Or the Coors plant in Golden? You can't tell where my tastes lie, can you...
Chrysler is building an entire marketing campaign around their Detroit roots and loyalty. Harley Davidson's facilities are inseperable from their lore. And I also disagree with you about Fender. There was severe backlash against the CBS/Fender thing, and part of that was due to the change in manufacturing techniques and location. To your point, though, I agree that both the AMF Harleys and the CBS Fenders are better than the diehards wanted us to think.
