I've just taken delivery of a new 1598 Melissa Etheridge Signature 12 string and it has the OP Pro preamp (love the sound, the bass notes just boom and even unplugged it drowns out my old Yamaha 12 string).

The preamp releases from the can, but there's what appears to be a very short wire that tethers the preamp to the can and this makes it very difficult to insert/change a battery. I had thought that the preamp would pop out of the can and be free ..... apparently not.

So, what's this wire that's tethering the preamp to the can and why is it so short?

I had thought that I'd be able to pop the OP Pro preamp out and throw an iDea preamp in as the mood took me, but apparently not.

I think those preamps started getting stolen, especially while hanging on walls in music stores. I just removed them.

It is probably a plastic tether. At least that is what I've seen in stores. No reason not to clip it free. As Damon said, to prevent theft while on display in a store.

OK, so the preamp should definitely be free of the guitar once it's released from the can?

I'm kinda reluctant to go snipping things when I don't know for sure what they are so thought I'd better ask first.

Like they said... Anti-theft feature for retail environments.

Is it just me, because every time I play an Ovation in a store some idiot has jammed the preamp in the wrong way (LH side first)?
