Location: Route 66, just east of the Cadillac Ranch | Hi Everyone. Work and other commitments have kept me away and I apologize for my lack of participation in the welcome committee. I hope all is well with everyone. Having had the privilege of owning this piece of Ovation history for a while, it's time for someone else to join the club. 1687-8 #0041-97. I paid $10k plus shipping and that's what I'd like to get, but I'm open to offers. I can take new pictures if you like but I doubt I can improve upon the pics on Jerome's site: Original Slothead #41 . Includes case, case cover, and lots of documentation all the way back to the original bill of sale. Sounds like a $10K guitar should. Feel free to ask questions. Nick |

Location: Colorado Rocky Mountains | Hey Mike! Yardsale? This is one guitar that I am really glad went to you (presuming I'm reading your post correctly). You and Ovation go back a long ways and its great that you'll now have a wonderful piece of the Adamas model history. You deserve it. Now, about that yardsale . . . |

Nick has been great and it will certainly be well taken care of by me and my family for a long time...I have a lot going on at the moment (and for a few days) but plan to get the list up for sale here first...and yes, Brad, it's a cherished piece of Ovation/Adamas history and it's an honor to be the caretaker for a while...stay tuned for the yardsale list...

Location: SoCal | If anyone doesn't remember - this was one of the two that Hector had.
My #50 (as close to original condition as possible), is the one that involved Hector, eBay, and Serge.
No #41 was also available but Hector had dropped it and broken the binding on the lower treble side. Michael Wong ended up buying #41 and #50 When Michael emailed me concerning #50, it was mine 9/27/09. Later, I was offered #41. Declined as I figured it was too much of a good thing.
Michael, congrats. It is a great guitar. Back years ago, the mothership said they couldn't (maybe wouldn't) repair the binding (Jerome has a good picture of the damage). I heard later that maybe there could be a way. If a repair wasn't done and you repair it, some of us would appreciate it if you explained how and where as anyone who has an original slothead, the 47RI, and even the 1687/1688 could have a problem later.
Again, you have a great guitar. |

Location: Des Moines, Iowa | Wow... this was a very interesting string of messages going back more than a couple of years and then right up until earlier today. I've not had the pleasure yet of playing an Adamas, let alone an original slot-head (I've read enough to know that those slot-heads are the holy grails of Adamas guitars). My budget can't quite swing $10K right now AND I probably should at least play around with some fiber-topped Adamas guitar. Even though I've not played one, I've certainly heard them played AND most recently on Dobro's "GuitarFire" CD (AMAZING!) AND even though I've not played one or even seen one in person, just hearing about this amazing piece of history and craftsmanship got me kind of drooling just a bit. Is that bad?
Nice to know that when I win that lottery, it sounds like for the right price I'll be able to find an original slot-head Adamas guitar almost anywhere (here).
Sad to hear that one of these babies fell down and was damaged, although it appears that it still sounds just as sweet.
But what do I know, I'm just a...

Location: SoCal | I believe when Stephen and I got our slotheads, we broke the pattern of the seller and buyer not listing what a slothead sold for. I posted what I paid for #50 which was $12,500 for a guitar in excellent condition although the case was replaced with the one that came with the OFC guitar (or a like new 9158) if I ever wanted to take it out. #50 was not listed or advertised...I will always appreciate a friend asking me if I wanted to buy it. That was September, 2009.
If an owner does seek to sell one, I would expect that due to the rarity it would go for at least $12,500.
As to textured tops, I believe Al has some inventory. In addition, there are 30th Anniv 1687's, as well as late '70's and early 80's 1687's for a lot less. |

When I decide to let someone else enjoy the magic of #57, purchased by Linda McCartney for Paul and Wings (and one of only 5 or so wide necks produced) the asking price will be a solid $15K. mine has the original brown case and heavy duty Ovation tan soft cover. actually, I think I have an extra brown soft case cover lying around somewhere that I got many moons ago.

Location: Phoenix AZ | Will be interesting to see what the future holds for collectable Ovation and Adamas models with the company gutted and gone. I guess it could go either way ... what was once considered collectable could turn into nothing more than a cheap curiousity. Or values could skyrocket with the reality that this really is it, and the few remaining relics of Ovation history are just that, truly historical.
Either way, I have a hard time imagining that I could ever part with the Slothead, the Q, the GC Shiny Bowl or the GC Thunderhead. Just too much sentimental value to me, no matter what the market says. |
