Location: Pacific Northwest Inland Empire | Using a 4-A Kermode "Iron Spruce" top, from up-yer-way, too. 35-to-40 lines-per-inch. Probably leave it 3/16", for added rigidity. |

Location: Pacific Northwest Inland Empire | Some additional photos. The stamped marking on the butchered soundboard is "NOV 28 1980"
The new top isn't perfect in the center-glued joint, but WTF; that's where the cone is going, anyway!
I reglued the serial # tag back onto the label- it's "S/N 110204"- probably matches up with the inkstamp date pretty well.

Location: Pacific Northwest Inland Empire | So, any thoughts? I think I've got this critter cornered!
Kinda tight around the waist, but that's the problem with a 14-fretter. It moves the bridge & saddle forward, relative to the optimal resonation location. That's probably why 12-fretters are a bit more resonant, to get the bridge into the lower-&-wider part of the soundboard.
The soundwell for the cone looks to be about 1-1/2" deep. Not my 1st time making one of those- basically, 3 rings of 1/2-inch MDF, the diameter of the cone, with a 1/2-inch bottom "shelf" to rest the cone on. It doesn't warp, and machines accurately.

Location: Pacific Northwest Inland Empire | Small problem. Looks like the FET volume-only preamp will have to be relocated. Probably to the bass-side, off the neck joint area. "Gotta break some eggs", I suppose. |

Location: Pacific Northwest Inland Empire | Nah, but thanks for the offer. I'm fine with relocating the electronics. I got the "parts donor" last night, and have a better idea of components placement now. Whatever hit that square-neck Rogue was pretty formidable. I was considering, albeit briefly, a restoration, but the structural damage is too extensive on the beast. I may somehow salvage the back & sides, with the soundwell intact. The neck will be sacrificed, bottomline. May be able to remove the fretboard, though. |

And, not one to toss things out, I am doing a water immersion on the old Rogue carcass to see if it can be born again. Pardon the somewhat sacrilegous tone. |

Location: Pacific Northwest Inland Empire | The Rogue is in pieces. Had polyvinyl glue, so the neck popped off easily. Now, got to router-off the damaged top off the body, and decide what to do with a disassembled, square-neck, 12-fret, 1-7/8"-nut, box guitar, with a vestigal soundwell, in need of reconstruction....... |

Location: Pacific Northwest Inland Empire | It's done. Pictures later this evening. Seems to be handling the tension, thus far. Took a stab, with the dimensional estimates from my diagram. Seems pretty close. Coulda been an engineer, instead of an over-opinionated headshrinker. |

THIS CRITTER ROCKS!!!
I plugged in, and was blown away by the presence & clarity. It's got an easy action, too- 3/32" on the bass, 5/64" on the treble side.
The thinline piezo is in the spider slot, with a bone saddle, and a bone nut. Nice thing about those aluminum necks- don't hardly budge, even with 12 strings, at concert pitch.
I'm thinkin'- REZXII,"Rezzy", for resonator-twelve. |

Location: Pacific Northwest Inland Empire | OK, so this is what happened to the Rogue carcass. I just couldn't throw it out. So, I glued all the neck cracks back together, laboriously carved the square neck into a round one, replaced the plywood top with a cedar version, with an inlaid rosette, used an Ovation bridge & ganged-up 3 saddles to fit the hole where a wide-bottom sensor SHOULD have gone, and pasted the whole mess together.
I included the side-by-side with the REZXII, as the Rogue was the hardware donor for the 12-string project. I can imagine hearing the redone Rogue using Danny Devito's line from the movie "Twins", "You mean, I'm the crap?!"

Another Box/Bowl saved is a worthy prize in of itself.
The fact that it is a playable piece of craftsmanship is awesome as well.
Do you need a little piece of Koa to um... extend that Bridge a bit or is that where the Abalone goes?

Might be "gilding the lily" a bit, or perhaps putting lipstick on a pig, but whaddya got in mind, in terms of extending the bridge? Wider, or longer? I've got a couple of hand-built FET preamps, so I could make it A/E, and make some bolsters for a thinline piezo.
I'm waiting to see if the the critter handles the stress for a few months. Leveling the frets on a bar-slide instrument was some effort. A good & level fret installation was apparently not a high priority in its manufacture. |
