I have a 94 EA68 Viper that I aquired recently. I have been playing it in my acoustic gig. I have an issue with the output level and a 'pop' when played hard. The output is considerably lower that my Taylor K-14, but it pops like a clip when played hard. Any thoughts?

I am a lead player and like the Viper, but like to go after it agressivly and am a bit discouraged by this issue.

Any advice would be appreciated!

also, what strings do you use? I have XL phospor bronze De Adarios on it now.

Thanks!

Sounds like a bad battery issue. Put a new battery in, (from a different batch if you buy bulk) and and try again.

Have you checked the 9v battery? Swap that out and let us know if it improves the situation.

I've experimented with a lot of stings on mine, and the D'Addario EJ16's work great, but I tend to like the DR Sunbeam 12's better as they tend to play a bit slinkier and work slightly better when playing leads and such in a more electric style. YMMV.
