Location: south east Michigan | This morning I was switching back & forth between my UTE, AD-II, & my '71 Balladeer when I noticed something. I can feel, I mean really feel the bowl of the Balladeer vibrate on my ribcage. With the UTE and AD-II.... nothing.
All three deep bowls. One is a cutaway.
What do ya think?
Different bowl materials? I'm 99.9% sure the Balladeer does not have the older hand laid bowl.
Is the top attached differently?
Do bowls "open up" after 30 plus years?? |

My little ol' 1121 is very light, and I'm sure it has a hand-laid bowl.
It vibrates more and sounds better than it's 1621 brother...
Do the other bowls have the injection-molded Ovation USA lettering in them? |

Just this AM I was checking the tuning on the 1997 and I noticed the bowl vibrating into my chest, especially the A and D strings.
I usually play softly and never noticed the sensation before. I'll have to check some of my other 'O's. |

I may be wrong but I think the change from hand-laid to SMC bowls corresponded with the introduction of the K-Bar. Pre K-bar anything with a wood neckblock would be a hand-laid bowl. |

Location: Phoenix AZ | Brad, It has nothing to do with the bowl itself. It's the TOP. The top on your '71 Balladeer is pumping the hell out of the bowl and hence you "feel" it in your gut. I've experienced this on some guitars also. But it does not seem to correlate to how well they sound. One of my that gave me belly cramps it vibrated so much, actually sounded like crap. Dave |

Totally agree, Dave. I've played some that pumped out a ton of noise but I really didn't appreciate it all that much. Guess that's why they make different tops and different bracing. |
