Question about the mute lever on Magnum basses

I play with a pick, and wear the bass fairly low-slung. The lever, even pushed in, is just protruding enough to be in the way. So, just looking to see if anyone knows the best way to remove the lever. Thanks much! I repaired one once ages a ago, but I don't recall there being much to it. However, after trying to unscrew the front screws of the bridge, and the one I just mentioned, the bridge won't budge. It seems there's a trick to removing the whole thing...which, sadly, I I haven't figured our yet!
