Location: Steeler Nation, Hudson Valley Contingent | It seems paradigms have shifted a bit on the OFC. Things grow, shift, evolve, run amok......whatever.
But here's the thing, I've gotten used to having an Ovation Calendar on my wall. And the present ones become obsolete, albeit in a beautiful kind of way, about 9 months from now. And the original team (Thanks again Brad and Steve!) have moved on to living up to their legitimate responsibilities. I'm busy as heck! But the thought of not having my monthly GAS booster-shot keeps bugging me.
So I've talked with DesignZilla and Al, and screwed myself up (How's that for a double entendre?) to pick up this ball and run with it (possibly for my life).
But bringing a 2013 Calendar into your mailboxes comes down in the end to ascertaining the overall interest for one. Not only does it suck up tons of personal time to lay out (ask Zilla and Slipkid), but the logistics can be a bit cumbersome as well. But if the interest is there, this can be done.
A couple of caveats:
1) I want to make it plain right out of the gate, that this project will NOT be intended as a money maker for me or any other person. The cost to members will be estimated from the pre-orders (if we get that far). When it comes to printing, the cost goes down as the number of copies goes up.
2) If any extra cash is made, it will go DIRECTLY to the OFC website.
So here's what's going to happen for now, I'll keep this thread afloat for a couple of weeks as-is. Feel free to offer input and/or say whether or not you would buy any. (There is no commitment yet! I just need to get some ideas about how many calendars we are talking about.) Either post directly here or PM me if you prefer.
If the interest warrants moving forward, I will ask for photo submissions and provide guidelines.
As far as cost is concerned, it is impossible to tell this early. The last calendars were $29. No guarantees, but I am reasonably certain it can be kept at-or-below that as long as there are enough orders.
So there you have it. Yet another hair-brained scheme launched by someone with too many turtlebacks. So do you all want to make it happen or not? |

Just a thought - Since Staples/Office Depot/Kinko's etc. print these items would it be easier to do the design and then just distribute a CD with the data and everyone can print up their own?
The Print-Pull system has gone fairly high tech and fast ya know. |

Woody, that's an interesting thought. I'm not sure what the print price would be for a single copy though. I suppose it would depend a bit on the stock you printed on, and you could even print in black and white if you just want to be contrary. But If you want something decent, you can figure 25 color prints (12 months, 12 portrait pages, and a cover page), binding (spiral works best), all done on heavy gloss stock.
......or something like that.
I'm not sure how distribution would work though. Email a pdf? Snail mail a disc? Set up a "pay for download" somehow? (I've never done the last and have no clue how I would go about it.)
As far as I am concerned; half the fun of the originals was knowing they were coming in the mail and opening the envelope like it was an early Christmas. But there's no denying it's the 21st century no matter how hard I try.

Would/will you be asking for shots of certain guitars, or will you have an "open" photo submission period and select the best photos? My stable is small compared to many of you here, but it might provide extra incentive to get me off my lazy arse and take some nice pics of the O's I have! |

As far as picture submissions go, it will be open season. The only request I will make is that we not use guitars that have already been used in other calendars. And please realize that there are only twelve months, so sadly, not everyone's can be used.
When I ask for submissions, I will also include guidelines. (I'm still working on them.) But if you have an Ovation or Adamas, feel free to submit.
Thanks everyone! |

Location: Steeler Nation, Hudson Valley Contingent | I've finished building the template for the calendar. We've gotten enough pre-orders to justify a small order. The only detail not nailed to the wall is a cost estimate for printing, but I am assured it will be reasonable.
As a result, I think it is time for you all to start thinking of picture submissions. Soon (maybe right after Easter) I will ask the mods to post a sticky with full submission details. But here are the basics:
1) Several high-quality prints, from various angles, of single instruments. (You can submit more than one set of photos, but I expect enough members to contribute that none should expect more than one month.) Please be aware that I may have to alter the size or possibly crop your photos for formatting and aesthetics, so save copies for yourself.
2) I would like the technical specs for each instrument. Please copy-paste the list below and include any details you have.
Full Name (of your guitar) and Model Number
Year Built:
(i.e. 1982)
Description:
(i.e. 6-string A/E)
Body Type:
(i.e. Deep Bowl)
Top:
(i.e. Solid Sitka Spruce)
Bracing:
(i.e. Ovation Fan)
Scale Length:
(i.e. 25 1/4”)
Fret Board:
(i.e. Walnut)
Fret Inlay:
(i.e. Pearl Dots)
Bridge:
(i.e. Carved Walnut)
Epaulettes:
(i.e. 5-wood, Inlaid)
Pick-Up:
(i.e. Ovation High Output)
Nutwidth:
(i.e. 1 11/16”)
Pre-Amp:
(i.e. Op-Pro Studio)
Include any pertinent additional information you would like to say about your instrument.
ONE LAST THING!
Don't send anything yet. Wait until the official request pops up with the email address to use, deadline, etc. I will ask Miles to make it a sticky thread/announcement to keep it where we can find it.
Thanks everyone for your interest! |

Location: Steeler Nation, Hudson Valley Contingent | Well I got some unexpected encouragement about this project today. I met my printing contact at church this morning and made a point to take an older OFC ccalendar to give her an idea of the materials/quality I was shooting for.
She was a bit excited when I approached, with the kind of look that says "I can't wait to tell you this!"
Apparently, her shop normally sends small projects like this out to a subcontractor. But when she took the proof I had emailed to her last week to her boss (looking for a quote), he told her that it looked too nice to subcontract and he would prefer to handle it himself, in-house. He promised a quote ASAP as soon as we nailed down the technical specs for the job. That shouldn't take too long now that they have the copy I provided.
So I don't know that it will be something everyone likes, but it sure sounded nice to hear such a compliment this AM. I had already made a few aesthetic "improvements" to the template since the proof, and I'm sure others will present themselves with various photo submissions. I may be biased, but I like the look so far.
As soon as I have a hard print quote, I can kick the real process into gear. Hopefully you'll all like the end result. |

And I agree on guitars + people shots. If you only include guitars, it will look more like a catalog (yawn), and if you only include people shots, it will look like a Facebook page (yuck). Have the best of both and just go with the best mix of shots in your judgment. Thanks for picking up the torch! |

Lord, don't we have things in common! They used this one in the '09 Calendar. More than half have since gone. Maybe it's a trend that the OFC Calendars cause GAS?
