Out of the blue I was asked to join a 5 piece band as the bass player just about a month ago.
Our first gig was this past Friday, a full blown 4 set 50 song performance.
Had to work my *** off to learn all the tunes in short order cause the practice schedule is one day a week....so this gig was done with a total of 5 practices (1 of which was an audition to join the band).

Here's a song we recorded at last Weds practice (with the intent to update the band webpage).... all the other tunes on the site (if you can access them) are with the old bass player and drummer. Eventually will replace them all but for now it is what it is.

No harmonies yet but they will come starting next week when I don't have to worry about learning the songs so fast.

Hope you guys enjoy the Beatles

Nice Stephen, sounds great! I'm sure you're having a great time too. What more can you ask for? Congrats to you and congrats to the band for snagging you!

I expect to be in Denver again soon. I'll check in and see if I can catch a performance.

50 songs in 5 practices? Wow. The last 5 practices, we've been working on the same 3 songs.

Sounds good, rock on man! What bass(es) are you using?

LOL Damon....remember that I was the newbie....everybody else pretty much knew the songs.

I got a song list and spent several hours a day learning the tunes so that by the time each Weds rolled around I had learn about 10-15 of them pretty good and then we would review them during rehearsal.

Glad you guys like the recording.

Brad, next gig (that I am aware of) is April 13 at the Trailside Saloon in Thornton.

Good on you, Stephen.
Next time we get together with Matt, I'll make you're the one holding the bass when he calls for a solo out of the blue...

If ever there was the look of a deer in the headlights, it was when Matt looked over his shoulder and said to Waskel, "O.k., you take it!"

damon67 - 2012-03-05 8:54 AM  What bass(es) are you using?

I got several that I rotate but mainly I am using a 60th Anniversary P-Bass with TI Flats on it.

Also got a MusicMan Stingray 5 and a 4001 Ric that I have used at practices but the P-Bass with flats sounds the best for the music we are playing. Got a sweet Ovation Magnum Fretless with Flats but none of the songs really call for it.

Also using A GenzBenz Streamliner 900 for the head with 2 Custom Made fEARful Cabs (12/6/1 and a 12sub).

The first "real" band I got into called me up and told me to come out and tape all their sets and have 'em learned by the next weekend. I spent every spare moment learning those tunes. I learned 85 songs in a week. I was 28 years old, too. Couldn't do that now. The lead guitar player would get me in front of a LARGE crowd in a local bar, probably 1300 or so, do a blistering solo and then look at me. I would fake as best I could but it sounded pretty bad. I would work on THAT song all week and when we'd get to it, he wouldn't give me a solo. Next song, he'd give me the floor this went on and on for a year or so and I could finally play solos that were mine. Not someone else's. He taught me some lessons.
