I play a good bit of time unplugged and I am interested in knowing the difference in the UNPLUGGED sound of the Elite 1778T vs. the 1868T.

I have played the 1778T and liked the sound very much but I haven't been able to try out the 1868T. I have heard that it sounds great unpugged also. I was wondering how much low end is sacrificed by the shallow bowl vs the mid-depth bowl. The shallow bowl I'm sure would be more comfortable to play. I love the textured finish.

I utilize alot of finger picking as well as strumming. Any opinions or advivce would be greatly appreciated.

Supershallow bowls are a compromise at best. Some people here play them acoustically and are fine with it. To me, a mid depth bowl is a compromise over a deep bowl and is as much as I'm willing to give up, sound-wise. You've got to play them to make your own decision.....

On the last Tour, I played TommyM's shallowbowl, and I was REALLY surprised how good it sounded!!

Granted, it doesn't "boom", but it sounded VERY nice for a shallow . . .

Anybody ELSE play it??

That about says it.
I'm sure that there are shallow bowl Ovations out there that sound better than other shallow bowls but however you look at it, it's a compromise.

Do they make an EliteT with a deep bowl?

You can get the contour bowl now in the T series.

My 1778T has as much presence and boom as my old deep-bowl 1111-4 Ovation. That's my only point of comparison. It is a lovely, balanced, sweet-sounding guitar and highly recommended, if you can get used to the 'Terminator' look.

I also have a shallow-bowl Legend that I just LOVE to play due to its nice unplugged sound, nice comfy 'handling' due to shallow bowl and just because it's the easiest to grab when the mood hits. However, it does NOT project like the 'T' or my deep bowl. You definitely notice the loss of projection and lower end. (Plugged in, of course, it's fine). When I jam, it's always with the 'T' as the Legend just gets drowned out.

SCStrummer, first, welcome to the OFC, second, seems like you have gotten some good answers and I am sure that you will recieve some more.

Some of us will be getting together in June for the Southern Style Jam II , there will be MANY different Ovations here. I know for a fact that there will be at least one 1778T. These are informal events, where everyone brings their O's and Adamii, play songs, and tell lies. It is a great opportunity to play the various guitars that are not normally seen in the stores.

Just read the thread for more details, we would love to have you join us!

I just got back from spending my lunch at American Music in Bellevue and played both, as well as a tangent.

The 1778T had a better acoustic tone and projection in my mind.

You guys are awesome! I appreciate the great feedback. What about the new Kaman truss rod vs the dual action truss with graphite neck stabilizers found on Elite T 2005 models?

I must say that I'm not too qualified to answer this, but I did notice the neck on my 1778lx from '04 feels different than the new 1778lx I just played at the store.

Maybe it's just me.

So the difference between the 1778lx and the 1778T are just in the finish?

How is the 1778T for fingerpicking? I had a Taylor 310 that was a great fingerpicker. Nice high end but not enough bass.

I don't fingerpick worth a durn, but when I hit the bass strings on mine with my thumb it goes Thung!

I imagine that you will get more bass response with a T than with the 310.

And the T supposedly gets more top movement, cuz of the lighter paint, than the LX. But that is just hearsay, and reading stuff. And the LX has more holes for one thing...
But the 1778T does not have paint and then varnish/lacquer or whatever it is...
They just hang it up, and hit it with the spray gun.

I do know that the 1778T is alot lighter than my 1718... But that is apples to oranges.

When I get the GCXT (or 1778-OFT, whichever it is) I can give you a side-by-side comparison between Bowl-paint and Paint-paint.

How is the top end on the 1778T. It's been so long since I've played one I can't remember. Theres not an ovation dealer in my area for me to try one again. I've heard it described as taylor-like.

I believe there's a difference on the necks between the LX and T, with the LX having the 5 piece and the T not, woods used are different too. The tops are different, the T has holes on upper bout, the LX on upper and lower, and the overall look of the lx is very well done with the inlaid epaulets and finish.

Got it!
The 1778T weighs less.

All other comparisons come with 'qualifiers'...
The T is louder with more bass! BUT!
My T is 14,631 serial number points older, so the top may have opened-up.
The 1778-OFT has new EJ16's on it, the T has a bit older EJ16's.

Screwwit, just get a 6758T!

The T, or at least the older red ones with Op30, have the non-LX bracing, and a two piece maple neck with truss rod cover. The neck profile feels the same as my 6778LX.

Get the 1778T. I've owned both and the 1778T sounds fuller and has much better bass than the 1868T. Also, it is a fine finger picker - well defined and articulate. Get one of the newer ones with the dual action truss rod and OP-Pro if you can. 100 times easier to adjust the truss rod when you need to, and the Pro is a fine preamp. My 1778T is one of my all-time favorites. Great, great guitar regardless of cost, but when you take the cost into consideration, the best US made guitar value, period.
