Never seen this video before. Sounds pretty amazing given that all they are using are the Ipads. I imagine they are full fledged musicians as well and didnt use those "smart instruments" on GB (Garageband).

Technology is absolutely amazing. Now you can play an "instrument" on your IPad that sounds pretty good and never touch a "real" instrument. I guess it brings music composition to some who never thought of trying it and gives active musicians a new landscape to work in.

I have an IPad an use garabeband to mix and add drums, bass etc. to compositions. I would NEVER had the opportunity to create some of the sounds I do and obtain the knowledge about production had it not been for this technology.

Geetarism,
Yes, Moe. is a very very good band with catchy tunes and usually pretty good vocals and harmonies. You should do a search on Youtube if you are interested in hearing them playing as a "normal" band.

That's cool and yet also somewhat disconcerting... I guess it won't be too long before the next generation of instruments are just a software app.
And the new "normal band" guitarists will simply download their choice of Ovation, Martin, Gibson, etc. plug-in. "Plug It In"!!!

I seem to recall similar arguments when synthesizers first hit the scene. They were hot for a while but never took over for real instruments. Neither will apps.
Besides, there's always a spot on the corner for a man and his guitar.

iPad Busker. The coon's tail is a little disconcerting, but buskers need to stand out, I guess.

MOE.! I used to see them a lot back in my hippy jam band days. I can't believe the drummer is playing the drums in garage band so well. It seems really difficult every time I try, and I'm actually decent on a kit.

I think Bjork recorded her new album entirely on an iPad. I would check it out, but it's Bjork, soooo probably awful.

We're waiting for the iPad3 !

I heard a rumor @ NAMM that there will be a US-Made version with a hand-laid back w/textured screen.

Most agree that the textured tops almost always sound better :)

music: "the science or art of ordering tones or sounds in succession, in combination, and in temporal relationships to produce a composition having unity and continuity"

My first music teacher stressed that it was the music and musician, not the instrument. I am amazed at what GarageBand can do. I am looking forward to the next iPad.

My wife got me an iRig 1/4" iPad interface for Christmas, and it is amazing what you can do with just an iPad, garageband and a guitar. This is stuff I used to dream about 25 years ago, and now its reality -- truly incredible technology. I honestly haven't had much free time to play around with it, but did manage to spend all of about 5 minutes recording a new ring tone for my phone:

I heard they'll be much lighter and more flexible too!

Software synths and samplers are a part of nearly every production and composition house in the world... and a large majority of touring shows as well. While they certainly haven't totally replaced anyone, ask any union string player, bassist, drummer/percussionist, etc., how much session and live work they've lost due to synths and samplers, and you'll get a different opinion. Maybe your confusion lies in expecting (like the early days) to be able to tell a synth string section or drum kit from "real" instruments. It's very hard to do these days, but make no mistake, synths are more than alive and well.

My post was a response to SOBeach's post..."That's cool and yet also somewhat disconcerting... I guess it won't be too long before the next generation of instruments are just a software app.

My point was, that in the day, there was talk of the death of real instruments due to synthesizers. It didn't happen.

And my point was, that it actually has happened to a greater degree than you acknowledge. You seem to believe the fad is over and synths lost... when so much of what you hear in movie themes, advertising, major and minor label releases are "virtual" instruments, not "real ones. And that trend will likely continue to increase, not decrease.

LOL Geetarism! I doubt that! It's fairly intuitive I find.
