Location: Steeler Nation, Hudson Valley Contingent | Hi folks,
I'm getting a 1979 Country Artist (1124) ready to put on the block tonight or tomorrow. I looked it up on Ovation's web site and it says it has a "shallow" bowl. I did not know they made a shallow bowl (as opposed to the super shallow bowl). How different is it from the mid-depth bowl. I would like to know so that I get it right in the description.
Thanks in advance for the help. :cool: |

Location: Phoenix AZ | It's an ARTIST depth bowl 5-1/8 inch. They called it "shallow" because compared to the only other bowl in production at that time it was, ummm, shallow. The Artist Balladeer, Glen Campbell Artist, and Country Artist all used this Artist depth bowl. That's probably where they got the name.
The mid depth cutaway bowl came along much later in life (late 80's ???) and is ever so slightly deeper than the Artist bowl. Maybe it's 5-3/8 or something like that.

[my 1621 has a slightly bigger bowl than my 1121... Go figger :confused: ]

Location: Steeler Nation, Hudson Valley Contingent | Thanks guys. It's definitely a little smaller than a mid-depth. (It sits lower in a case.) I guess it's an Artist bowl then.
It'll be posted soon.
Anyone want to buy it? ;) |

And it is not cuz of the volume knob. The 1621's bowl is just bigger. Strange huh?
I could squeeze it in, but... (I just checked again to make sure I wasn't talking outta my butt) |

| My 1974, 1621-4 came with a brochure referring to it as an Electric Artist.
Does that help to muddy the waters any..lol |

They (along with the Glen Campbell Artist, Electric Glen Campbell Artist, Country Artist and Electric Country Artist) all had the Artist depth bowl which was also referred to as the Shallow bowl.

(Drat...I had both depths here for a few days; I should have done the comparison while I could have....)

If you think that 1/8" difference would make a difference, then take a look at this GC 1627 on the "bay. It's an early 80's model, has a Kbar in the neck and A bracing (at least it looks like it from the pics). It would sound good and feel good to you.....

With artist bowl being it's own designation. |

SSB = 4 1/16
SB = 5 1/8
MDB = 5 2/8
DB = 5 13/16
Adamas = 6 1/16
So : Mid-depth, Artist and Shallow bowl are +/- the same bowls. |

The other rather more likely conclusion that could be drawn from that, is it's the cases that have the slight variation in size, rather than the guitar bowls. |

| Bill did you guy's ever experiment with a jumbo body? Bigger top or deeper bowl? Was the adamas bowl depth arrived at by frequency response? Curious. |

Location: Pewaukee, WI | To me the artist (shallow) bowl seems a little 'flatter' on the back, where the mid curves a little more. Does that make sense? So while the mid is only a little deeper it feels bigger to me (and would explain why it would have trouble with a case designed for the artist bowl. |
