Location: Seattle | The idea for iDea for dummies is brillant... I just got my pre-amp and find no installation instructions in the "retro fit" kit.
I am worried about changing "can", drilling, etc. and any other advice/suggestions/thoughts missing. |

What kind of guitar are you retrofitting the iDea into? Pictures are mandatory when you're done!
The can should be a very simple 3 minute replacement if you already have an OP series preamp. Open the back hatch on your guitar, then remove the existing preamp as if you are changing the battery.
Now, look inside the old can and you'll see two phillips head screws. Loosen each on about 25 or 30 full turns. There are wings on the outside of the can that grip the guitar and you have to fully loosen the screws before the wings will fold in. Reach inside the back of the guitar through the open hatch and hod the wings folded in, and gently push the can out.
Once the can is out of the body, you'll see two cords plugged in. One is the pickup and the other is the output jack. The plugs are different sizes, so you can't confuse them. Just unplug them from the can and plug them into the new can. Then reverse the process to install the new can.
There is apparently an additional item on the iDea can (I haven't seen one yet) that is an aux in jack. If you want to use it, you'll have to drill a small hole somewhere in the back of the guitar and plug in the wiring to the additional jack on the new can you just installed. |

Location: Seattle | Just finished installing the Idea preamp on a roundhole ovation without removing strings.
(actually if was an Applause as I was chicken to drill in to one of my ovations.)
This might be content that would be appropriate to have on the install page of the IDEA for Dummies page.
----------------------------------------------
Notes on installing the AUX plug for the IDEA retrofit OPi-1 on round hole Ovations that do not have rear access door WITHOUT removing strings.
Follow the install instructions to step 3.
http://www.roundbackguitarforum.com/idea-install-guide.pdf
Plug in all 3 connections into the pre-amp can. (Pickup, Guitar jack, and the AUX wires.)
Do not install the pre-amp can yet.
Drill 15/64 Hole... about 1"+ from guitar 1/4 jack.
Take a about 3' of small gauge coated wire and insert in the hole you just drilled from the out side and pull thought the can opening. (leaving enough on the outside of the bowl to pull on later.
Thread the wire into the AUX jack plug that will go on the bowl.Tie a knot on the end and pull the wire back through the hole till the AUX jack threads show on the outside of the bowl.
Slip the washer and the nut over the wire and secure on the threads of the Aux jack that is now sticking out of the hole you drilled.
Remove the wire by pushing it back through the Aux jack and pull out of the pre-amp can opening.
Check that the 3 wires are still securely plugged into the pre-amp can,
Finish the install starting on step 8 of the instructions securing the pre-amp can into the bowl. |

Location: Phoenix AZ | Yop, that's exavctly how you wire up a Thunderhead, ES335 or other semoi hollow electric guitar. I'll include that tip on the install page. BTW, the BASICS page is almost done. Feedback welcome. |

| Two edits to consider on the IDEA for Dummies page.
>Under the IDEA tab where it talks about preamp compatability. System Requirements:
OP10, OP11, OP20 will also work per the IDEA packaging (and my actual replacing of a OP10).
>>under the Basics tab: Tuning. I have yet to find a way to make just the headphone jack activate tuning. Finding only a 1/4 plug (dummy or real) will make this work. Tuning arrows come up but never pick up a string to tune to with just the headphones in. |

Thanks for the tips. |

I haven't played with it too much yet. Right from the get go I was able to record something pretty easily. The one thing I did learn was that I need to wear glasses  when I use the darn thing. |
