Location: Avondale, AZ | It sounds simple enough and we've all have taken it for granted. However this is the first time in years, after losing control of my right side in a stroke, that I've been able to play with control of my right hand. I only strummed and picked the strings that I intended. I even sounded good, though I have forgoten alot. This has been a long time comming. Lots of theropy. I felt that I was getting alot of control on the guitar back lately. Tonight I picked it up to clean it and then I was playing "Like a Huricane" and "Johny B Goode". Strange what you remember first. Now I am shaking with joy. |

It has been an on and off again part of my thearopy. In the beginning it was too frustrating. I would give up. At one point I was just excepting that my guitar piece of brain was dead. I stayed away from this sight. In the last 1/2 year or so I would do a little every few days. I would get a lick here and again right. Then my 6 and 8 year old would tell me that part was good or that part didn't suck. Encouragement. I just now followed up with an 1/2 hour of scales. Far from faltless but that's from rust. Thanks everyone for your kind words. They are encouraging too. |

Always refreshing to hear about something getting better. And at the same time humbling as it reminds us of the things we take for granted.

Location: Avondale, AZ | Ok, quick update before I calm down and go to bed. Tried "Jumpin' Jack Flash" and a blues progression in G with some lead licks improvised. Both sounded good (don't get me wrong, I'm not playing on stage anytime soon). Then I tried the intro to "Black Magic Woman", very rusty. My right wrist is sore and because I chose to do all of this with my 10lb goldtop, my left shoulder is sore too. |

I have a good friend who, about 25 years ago, had the wall of a log home he was building collapse under him. The doctors told him he was so damaged he would be in a bed for the rest of his life. He chose not to believe that, and is walking and driving... oh, and still building log homes today.
Good on ya, OLJ! Keep it up! |

Location: Avondale, AZ | I am grateful for all your responses. They actually made me feel loved. I have strugled to get were I am today. Your cheers have helped me. I want to updating you on my progress. While I am getting more dexterious, I am having trouble retaining songs I learn from tabs. I can read them and put them to notes on the guitar but I don't seem to retain them. I can play the chords and improvise lead from sheet music. The songs that I used to play are coming back to me in bits and pieces. After what I'd been through, it seemed I would never play at all. I am just grateful that I reached the point where I can cordinate both my hand to play at all. Thanks again for your kind encouagement. |

I've never been through what you have and I have trouble retaining songs learned off tab. As I am 52, I beleive that allows me to claim "Old Age" and memory loss as a natural thing that happens. ;) What I would give to be able to Improvise songs. I know its what you are use to, but , you appear to be actually ahead of me. So enjoy (as you are) what you have and the rest will come back in time. |

Being 62, I find that I do well with maybe a dozen songs (playing, not singing) in a stretch. But I'm having to 'cheat sheet' songs if they're not in the current rotation.
It is kinda frustrating, but since I'm playing for my own enjoyment and not professionally, it's not a big deal to me. A little refresher and some practice seems to get me back into the song.
You're doing great. Just keep at it! |
