I've been following this one for awhile. Can't wait to play it next week. Looks beautiful Paul. |

Location: SoCal | In 1979 I bought a 1117 with my tax refund. I was too dumb to know that it wasn't that good of a guitar, and over the years, I disliked it more and more. Finally in 1993, I traded it, w/ some cash, to a local GC and got my 1537. Unfortunately, this had been the guitar that I wooed my wife on (numerous stories) and she cried. I bought it back, making the whole deal a money loser for me.
Finally decided last year to make the guitar into something I would enjoy playing (it was really only good when strung Nashville). It went back to the factory where the old body was trashed. Using the old neck, we built a new body w/
cloth bowl
AAA spruce top
A bracing (replacing that dreaded VT-11)
bone saddle and nut
5 point rosewood bridge
Moody Leather strap, courtesy of my wife
I got it back yesterday. It sounded pretty good with the EXP lights from the factory, but much better with mediums. It's my "front porch" guitar. No electronics. It's a "one of a kind".
I like it...... |

Location: SoCal | Karl, I thought about a shiny bowl, but I've got 2 shiny bowls now (GCDB and rebuilt 1118) and they do slide around. This one's meant to be a player.
The 5 pointer is just because I've always liked them, this one was available, and I thought it would make this guitar very unique (well that and probably one of the few AAA spruce tops on a 1117).... |

Location: Chicago | Excellent! We are brothers in 1117-hood, as you know. I, too, serenaded my wife to be (and, then, wife) on this Legend. It has grown into a nice tone monster over the last 35 years. Best wishes on your refurbished beauty! |

The phosphor gives the warm sound you hear on "Lullaby"... |

Location: Chicago | A bit of a hybrid, actually: I use lights for the wound: 3rd = 24 4rth = 32 5th = 42 6th = 53
But for the top I use a 13 and 17 for "beef". So: medium top and lighter bottom. Sounds great on the Adamas.
For me the "bottleneck" is the third string. I simply can't handle anything heavier than a 24 there. The downside is that a wound 24 is rather brittle and does not last long, even coated! |
