Location: SoCal | Got the honor of meeting Brad (ProfessorBB) Thursday night at Paul's party. Jerrie (Moody's wife), as usual, is commended for her wonderful hospitality and patience with hosting OFC'ers and friends (should give Paul some credit also). They were taking pictures so I am sure there will be some posted.
Was at NAMM for a couple of hours on Friday. Ovation had a three-sided display/room with demos for the iDea amp and several of the iDea guitars.
Martin has a $40,000 Koa (ouch).
Takamine has a couple of Koas (very nice), was told Nashville no longer part of the product line. BG (Blue Grass)models were rarely on the hangers, usually being handled and/or played.
Ovation had the 2009C (Koa)- center hole, Celtic knot rosette, inlaids, OpPro Studio...very nice. |

Two words - "COLLINGS UKULELE".
Ovation showed the usual slew of imports. The asian balladeer and elite does not look half bad. USA models were the Al Dimeola roundback and the new Koa Contour Collector (now called KC2). The KC2 was very attractive and appeared veyr well made. I'm still choking on the price.
Showed three adamas models. The ME12-string, 2080, and a new one-of-kind adamas I think called the model 1781. A very cool one off of the Adamas II cutaway. Contact Al, I think he will get the only one in existence.
They showed the iDEA guitar and pre-amp BIG TIME. Must have had 10 guitars on display with headphones and instructions how to dmeo it. Was really well done and I think this iDEA is turning out to be a hit.
I'll post the Takamine stuff over on the other board. The new Glen Frey dreadnaught is really nice and a steal for the price. Ditto on the 2009 LTD. Beautiful sunburst instrument. I think I need to get one. They also showed two very limited (24 units each) and expensive (list 4299.) Koa guitars. WOW were they ever nice. I'm a little Koa'd out, but damn damn damn these were really quite stunning. Another beauty believe it or not was a G series. But not any G series, this was a New Yorker with solid top and it was really well done. It'll sell for $500. and I can't possibly think of a better deal.
A hit of the show for me was the Guild D55 made in New Hartford, called D55-CT. Man what a nice dreadnaught. Interesting that they had the D55 and D55-CT side by side and you couldn't tell them apart. Both outstanding. Of course my heart is with the CT version. Nicely, nicely done.
Martin had a huge display. Almost too many models to digest. The side sound hole guitar they first showed last year is back, no in production and it's quite nice. The other thing I notice is that Martin finally seems to be doing some nice bursts including a black-cherry-burst that you would swear the paint came from an Ovation recipe. Quality on all the Martin stuff was of course top notch. Had a few words with Chip about the ukes.
PRS showed their first acoustic guitar. Cosmetically nice but no idea really how they sound. Looked well made, as does any PRS I guess. Time will tell. Taylor had a ton of models on display and every one was plain vanilla. I guess the name sells, but I sure as shit would never buy one. Really pushing their electric stuff (yawn) and they now have a "Custom Shop" where the buyer configures his guitar and becomes integral in the design and orgasmic fufillment of his dreams. Oh boy ...
That and about a ton of other stuff, plus an achielles tendon 1 week out of the cast, made for quite an experience.

Location: Phoenix AZ | Here's an amazing new model from Takamine. Did you want an EF417 New Yorker (Parlor) guitar but couldn't swing the price. Well here's a G series New Yorker that's just stunning, model G406-F. Solid spruce top with laminated back/sides. Check out the abalone inlay work and fretboard trim. The most unbelievable part check out the price tag. Yeah $599 list. You'll probably see this at retail under $500. The quality and finish is top notch all around. Just a beautiful instrument for now much cash.

Location: Phoenix AZ | Here's the OVATION 2009 COLLECTORS. Very nice looking guitar . Actually more attractive in person than it is in photos. The fretboard inlays are nice are the combination of tortise and abalone binding looks great.
The price tag is staggering, but if you want a limited (150 units) Ovation with some nice looking ornamentation I guess this is the going rate. Interesting that the VIP-5 preamp was nowhere to be seen on any models. Looks like they are really pushing the OP-Studio and iDEA preamps instead.
I forgot to get a photo of the new model one-off Adamas. Duh. I'll let Al post about that one because this is a very special guitar.
Not much else on the USA Ovation front. They showed an Al Dimeola roundback and one VXT. Everything else was asian and sort of bland. Not a sniff of Adamas Custom Shop. There was a poster that said they will come out with more acid reflux induced Elite-T paint schemes and heroine things. I'm getting to old to even know what the hell these things are. Maybe I missed it but I didn't see any mandos, ukes or asian 12-strings. I suspect they had to sacrifice a lot of Ovation square footage in exchange for the iDEA booth that was REALLY WELL DONE !!! |

Location: Phoenix AZ | Here's two new VERY LIMITED EDITION Takamines. These things are about as beautiful as it gets. Only 24 units of each. Not cheap ($4299. list) but based on visuals well worth it. Could give them a good sounding but knowing Takamine they probably sound outstanding. Cutaway Dreadnaught (EF17C) and Non Cutaway OM sized (EF77). Both with TDL line driver electronics. I'm a little koa'd out but these are really beautiful ...
Here's the 12th fret inlay on both models ...

Location: Phoenix AZ | Here's the TAKAMINE LTD 2009. If there was an award for the prettiest guitar in the Kaman booth this one would win it. Stunning good looks. The Tak sunburst finish is among the best I've ever seen and the NEX non-cutaway body size is wonderful. CoolTube-2 electronics. This one is a head turner for sure. Too much noise to give it a good listen, but I would suspect it's really good. This is probably one I have to have ...

...I think it would look nicer with a darker bridge. Dark pins would be nice too, but a bone SADDLE is fine.
With regards to matching the bridge to the back and sides, it got me wondering, so I looked through my latest Acoustic Guitar magazine and it seems pretty evenly split. Lots of dark bridges on acoustics. |

No, I take that back. The iDea preamp and guitar was very cool.
But as far as serious players guitars, there were the 3 Adamii, an DeMiola, (DiMeola?), and the 09C and that was it. I've been bummed the last 2 years by the Ovatons at NAMM...... |

Agree, the whole iDEA thing was super cool. And the 09C was nice except for the price. Other than that I think the Daisy Rock display was way better. |

Location: Phoenix AZ | Not sure. I think it's basically an OP-Pro minus the EQ bypass button. And the rotary volume is replaced with a much more linear slide control. But what goes on under the hood, who knows.
An interesting note, the iDEA preamp (maybe any preamp) with the thinline pickup of the iDEA guitar sounds sort of crappy to me. But in a quality guitar with an OPP pickup I think it sounds wonderful. I'm using my iDEA mostly in the KOA-12er or the 09C Adamas and as far as the basic pre-amp performance it sounds every bit as good as the native preamps in those models. |

Much better to my ears than the VIP. I got several compliments on the sound, and it doesn't eat batteries like a kid with a bowl full of M&Ms... |

Location: Colorado Rocky Mountains | Enjoyed becoming familiar with the iDea guitar. Pretty intuitive, but I needed more time to get the looping/recording feature timed correctly to be able to play along with it. Matt demo'd its use with a pre-recorded track, which was excellent, but I could only find two tracks on the model I tried. This was my first visit to NAMM. The amount of gear is just mind-blowing. Thanks to Al for letting me follow him around for a few hours and collect all the free swag. He demonstrated his experience with these kinds of shows as he knew exactly where to find it. I was particularly impressed with three things . . . the number of free demos by major endorsee stars (George Benson, Brian Wilson, Leo Kottke, Joe Satriani, tons of others), Gibson's Robot guitar (they had several dozen to experiment with and it was a lot of fun), and my favorite, gazing at the Martin D-100 (available for $50,000 - see your dealer). Thanks to Moody and his wife for hosting the get-together and chance to meet new friends and reacquaint with old ones. It was some of the best food I had all week. |
