Location: Midland, MI | I usually warm up with a generic 12-bar blues in E. Then, once I've covered that a few times, I switch to something more difficult. Like a generic 12-bar blues in G. If I'm feeling particularly ambitious, I'll play a little 12-bar thing that goes G-F-C but sometimes I throw in an Am just to be all funky. By then I'm usually pretty wiped out, so I close up with the intro to "Reelin' in the Years" and random melodic lines (I tell my wife it's "jazz!").
Heh. |

Would that be 'Boris the Spider'?
cruster ,
Day-um, that's one I don't have on my learn list! Updated... Thanx!
Mark,
That one is my life's goal. I've yet to find the extended time and proper location to learn my favorite guitar piece of all time! I still get geese bumps when I hear it! |

I found my Classic in a music store and a guy I worked with happened to be there. I asked him to try it and he started playing pieces of Classical Gas. I bought the guitar and he gave me a PowerTab of it. I worked on it a little almost every day for around a year. I miss a few notes, but I can get through it pretty well. It's about the only thing I play on my Country Artist. |

I used to warm up with 'Peter Gunn'...
MiB,
Oh how I envy ya! I remember the first time I saw/heard Mason Williams playing it on the Smother Bros. Show. Then there was the histo-photo vid with the pics and music... Completely blown away! |

I hoped you would reply, in that I was/am puzzled by your refs. So you're talking about exercises, right?
Now the "dooh wah diddy diddy dum diddy doo ".. I can relate! |

Just kiddin ;)
If I'm singin and doin acoustic stuff and I'm tuned to standard tuning it's usually either:
1. Elderly Woman Behind The Counter In A Small Town
2. Needle and the Damage Done
3. Grace is Gone
I'f it's the electric, some bluesy scales or something original. |

The point is to make it ye`r Own , many outthere do not write music , take a song , change it and make it better , so can you , ya just need a Valve -Amp. , case of beer , and some bootyfull girls in the audience , you `ll do fine... :)

Location: Whitecourt, Ab | I usually play an E chord, letting each string ring, to check and see if I'm in tune, or close to it. Then some 12 bar blues in A to loosen up the fingers and wait for some inspiration. |

I'm with you on this one Humble. For a couple years I've been focusing on songwriting, Every morning I do about 3 pages of free writing, just as an exercise, whatever comes into my head. Takes maybe 15 mins. then I sit with whatever guitar I choose and just doodle and see what comes out. Lately it starts with finger picking a bluesy open string thing but sometimes just a driving rhythm with some open chords. The whole exercise is incredibly relaxing and has really spawned some good songs, if I do say so myself.
I only work on other peoples songs if I'm inspired to put one in my show. I learn it the way it was written as best I can and then make it my own in the performance.
Pretty sure I'm not going to get rich or famous at this point, but its so much more rewarding doing originals, besides I haven't got rich or famous the other way! Now I at least try to nurture my creative self, a little at a time.
I went for years and years without at least trying to write, and I've finally gotten some discipline and its very rewarding. The most important thing to remember is everything you write isn't going to be good,so I don't beat myself up. Just by writing you develop as a songwriter and the work just seems to get better.
Or maybe the world does need one more performance of Brown Eyed Girl, just for old times sake! |

| Usually I just play whatever comes to mind when I pick up the guitar; there's some jazz riffs and chords that I go back to absent mindedly so either that or whatever I've been practicing lately.
For the past week or two I've been messing with open tunings and with DADDAD my 1621-4 will drone like a set of bag pipes so I've been working up some things that sound like a lament but I still haven't arranged it all into one piece.
In standard tuning this guitar has always seemed a bit dull (electric bridge & shallow bowl I guess) but with open tunings it has beautiful colouration and sustain. I can go to the fridge to get a beer and the guitar will still be going when I get back..lol |
