Yeah, all six were this bad.
The next 'related' project is a 12er. Hopefully they won't be near as bad... |

What did you use to clean them up?
I found your post just as I was about to ask a pretty ridiculous question on the same topic:
Are all the tuners (in my case, all 12) identical except for the obvious top/bottom (left/right) orientation? It never crossed my mind that there would be any difference until after I pulled a few off (ok, 6, only half-way without thinking first… that's actually pretty good for me… ;) ) Only then did I discover the small numbers ranging from 1-4 on the back (normally hidden) side of the base of the tuners.
I THINK these are just different die numbers, but the tuners are otherwise identical? They sure appear that way, I even tried to determine if the gear ratios all appeared the same… they do.
They ARE all the same, aren't they?
thanks! |

Whoever had this git in the past took VERY good care of it. It's in great shape. But being subjected to a smoking environment, there were several areas not attended to during standard cleanings.
I get such a kick out of 'breaking down' the hardware and revealing the beauty beneath/beyond the standard wipe down. That's not counting reviving the fretboard, frets and body with some TLC. The tuners were broken down into four parts for the clean up. I used 0000 steel wool with mineral oil to remove the 'residue'. Well worth the effort!
Hopefully in the near future I can compete with Damon on a unique photo shoot...
standing,
Just caught your post prior to this response. I've already reinstalled the tuners, so I can't help ya as to the 1-4. I'll watch for that on the 12er that's next. |

You should set up shop at the next OFC gathering.
It could help pay for any unforseen medical bills! ;)

I'm glad I wasn't drinking my coffee when I read your post!
BTW, I first tried using 'Cape Cod' metal polishing cloths which normally does a great job in most cases. In this case the 'gunk' needed some moisture in order to break it down. So out came the MO and 0000... |

Good work. |

I didn't even polish 'em for the pic. Just mineral oil, 0000 steel wool and a wipe down. Prior to re-installation I did hit 'em a cloth that I had used to wipe down the git using 'ghs Guitar Gloss'.
As to your replating comment, that's an endorsement for the hardware quality. As I said, the guitar was well taken care of. Just the tight spots needed any detailed attention. |
