Location: Reno, NV | I read about moving the strap button on a "standard" shaped guitar to the underside of the neck to keep it from rolling top-up while standing. What can be done for those of us that have cutaway guitars? Specifically a mid-bowl.
PS. Not really interested in the "Standing Ovation" either. What can be done with the strap setup. |

Location: Colorado Rocky Mountains | Different flavors here. I'm not a fan of a strap button anywhere but on the upper bout of the guitar. Anything on the lower side, and to some degree, in the middle of the back of the neck found on some archtops, can create problems because the guitar's center of gravity is above the strap button, thereby causing the guitar to pitch forward and flip itself around if unsupported. Normally, this can be controlled when the guitar rests against your body, but then invariably you'll bend over to pick up something off a stool or the floor and bingo, the guitar rotates forward and bangs into stuff. I really hate that. Perhaps this is the reason that a large majority of guitars made, and certainly the heavy solid bodies, have their strap buttons installed on their upper bouts or horns. |

Bold move Dave. I didn't put it there. There's where Takamines come standard. Taylor also, and some others. A number of old shiny bowl Ovations also came from the factory like that. |

Location: Tennessee | My reissue Balladeer K-1111 has the strap button mounted on the body on the "treble" side of the neck. Same place as the JL3 (the stacked tone/vol know is on the bass side). I like it there ... keeps the guitar from rolling up. But that will only work with a non-cutaway ... the spot that Dave indicates is where it is on my Taks too, and is also the recommended spot by Martin. Some of my other guitars have it right in the heel ... my 1969 1117 comes to mind but I think that was done post-factory. Not sure but I think I have read somewhere that directly into the heel can be an issue with Ovations ... but my 1117 shows no ill effects. |

Location: Sydney, Australia | My old 1117 (non cutaway) was mounted on the treble side of the bowl, and that worked well to keep the face upright. The standard mounting (bass side of bowl) seems to work well on my contour bowl 08C, but the same mounting didn't go so well on my mid bowl W597.
The absolute worst I have tried is on the bass side of the neck itself (such as on the early slotheads and the #47 reissue). If you stand up, the face of the guitar wants to point up towards the sky. I agree with Dave, if I had a non-contour cutaway, the lower side of the neck would be a good place to put the strap button. |
