hmmmm what did that gas station guy used to call the tangent????

If you like the tangent buy it but there are better USA models out there to be had.
as for the solid body viper or preacher or if you are on a low budget ultra gs

btw did you know paul was not even named paul?

I once had a cop put his 9mm to my head.....

Couldn't have been me, when I was forced to retire I was still carrying a wheel gun.
That's that's another source of GAS I suffer from. (Gun Aquisition Syndrom)

Paul wasn't Paul?

Although brain damaged, he lived to become a sponsor of the OFC.

I buried Paul.

For really low budget, there was a Celebrity solid body on the local Craigslist for $150. Probably go for less if it's still around.

There's something about those Pauls. The one in the Beatles was actually named James.

Welcome ladylaw. I'm sure you'll find what you're
looking for. I'm not a Tangent fan, but I think the recent Ultras are a great value at about a Tangent price. For electric, I like Vipers best.

My favorite PPM song is "Day is Done".

Just about everybody who picked up a guitar in the 60's folk era learned some PP&M. My favorite is Early Morning Rain.

I lusted after a Tangent for a while but then switched my lust to a Thunderbolt because they were made in USA, have a solid spruce top rather than the plywood top of the Tangent, and PEZ raves about his T-bolt (if you search for PEZs posts you'll see what I mean. And at the present time T-bolts aren't much more expensive than Tangents ( I watched one go for <$300 with case on fleabay). But I decided to get a solidbody first.

I still play that one, that way. Most know it as "The Water is Wide" but the jazz chords someone infused into that tune just don't sound right to me. I stick with my version of the PPM version.

Wow, what a great group. Growing up I was teased for loving Ovations and groups like PPM.
It's nice to know I'm normal......well as normal as I'll ever be.
I love it here.
Thanks for all the input.

I heard nothing but high praise about the Viper from anyone. After owning one now, I can see why. I don't think there is a better guitar for what they go for.

I can't say anything about the tangent from experience, but I don't recall hearing much ranting and raving from anyone here about them either.

"Leaving on a Jet Plane" was one of the first songs I performed as a middle schooler.

Anyhow, I really love my daughter's Preacher Deluxe. It has a lot of different sounds and is a joy to play. But.... it is a heavy sucker. Solid Mahogany. Like a brick really. Great guitar, but heavy.

Everybody raves about Vipers. That's what I would get if money is a concern. They go for a whole lot less than a Preacher or Breadwinner.

But what do you want it for? Just sitting and doodling, or for serious performances? Is there a particular emotional factor, like a long suppressed lust for David Cassidy which would suggest buying a Breadwinner? Or just a case of O'mania?

I can assure you it is NOT a case of lusting after David Cassidy!!! Never liked him, never will. Yuck.
I mainly play for my own pleasure and I just would like a solidbody Ovation.
Money is a consideration, so I'll keep looking and with all the help I'm sure I'll find something soon.

I've been thinking about this alot especially since I'm retired, on a 'budget' and altho I'm new I have picked up that you guys help out newbies with spending their money. :)
I've been offered an Ovation Preacher in excellant condition for $799. That's really more than I would like to spend but I also know that if I want good I need to pay more.
Is this a good deal? I don't have pics. It's a Red color.
Thanks, again
Anita

For today's economy that is about 2X of where a Preacher should be (IMHO).

Check with Woody.....he had some really nice "almost original" guitars that would probably make a killer guitar for you to start out with.

$799 sounds just a bit high for a Preacher. We paid $700 or $750 (can't remember which now) last spring for my daughter's Preacher Deluxe in very nice condition, including case.

There is a difference in the electronics of the regular Preacher and the Deluxe. The deluxe has an active preamp and coil taps.

Although some of the used guitars have come down in value the past 6 months, the Preachers and Breadwinners don't seem to have suffered as badly as others.

Assuming the guitar is in very excellent original condition with a nice original case, $799 sounds like a reasonable starting point for the seller to ask. As a buyer, $600 to $700 would seem reasonable as an actual purchase price. Less would be a bargain IMO. Plus shipping of course.

In this market, don't be too hasty. Look around and see what the going rate is for the guitar you like. There will always be another good Preacher for a similar price.

I have to agree with Stephen on this one- Preachers just aren't going for that much these days, at least on eBay. I wouldn't pay much over $500 for one in mint condition with little or no fret wear. $799 is too high to even start talking. If they were asking $599, at least you could work your way to a reasonable price.

If it's FlySig's Preacher Deluxe- bound neck, active electronics, with a battery compartment on the back- then $600-$700 is reasonable. $799? Still too high.

It's not uncommon to see solidbody Ovations priced higher than the (eBay) market will bear. A Viper or Preacher is a really nice US-made 70s/80s guitar, so it ought to be worth a lot, right? Doesn't always prove to be true.

Don't be in a rush, there are plenty out there, and many of them turn up for sale here.

I'll ship/insure (CONUS) the top Preacher (1281) for $680. Conservatively rated at very good to excellent condition.

I can take more pics if anyone is interested.
