Sittin here drinking coffee on the beach and chillin. SWMBO and myself arrived yesterday afternoon and Unca Beal graciously picked us up from thr airport and dropped us off at the Amelia Oceanfront B&B which literally sits right on the beach. Very relaxing and soothing and gives me some alone time with wifey before I COMPLETELY IGNORE her starting Weds afternoon.
Went to 29s last night for dinner and then walked over to the Florida House and listened to bluegrass while drinking Grand Mariners with Lia and Bobbie Joe....great timr but made for a slow moving morning,,,,hence the coffee on the beach.
Anyway, the down time is very nice but I am gettin antsy to get things goin. Probably gonna call Unca Beal this afternoon and bum a guitar off of him.
I heard that a few more unfortunately had to drop out which is a bummer but I hope everyone who did so is ok!
I am sure others will pick up this thread as things get moving. |

My bar tab last night would have bought SEVERAL bottles of Grand Mariner or Matusalem!! Your way is way more economically friendly ;)

Were those Seattle Mariners? Other mariners are hard to drink...like, for instance "Ancient Mariners" Too dry. If any of those Grand Mariners had a few Grand Marniers in 'em they might have gone down a tad smoother!
APOLOGIES! I just get a real kick out of it when typoes put certain images into my head! And, of course the reason is that I'm the worst offender!!!

Mike - same thing happened to me. My company laid off over half of our sales force, leaving just a few of us to cover the whole thing. I'm just thankful it wasn't me. I went through the whole layoff thing a couple of years ago. |

I am not sure if Beal made it or not? He was a bit under the weather on Monday so I did not bother him today but thought I might see him tonight.

After a little over 3 years I finally finished mine up last month by putting in a nice patch bay and XLR mic extender rack. It just reduced the stress level of changing the i/o configurations by a factor of 150%! Man, I can't believe I waited so long to take the final plunge.
Mike, I will be looking forward to you sending me some rough mixes along with polished products! |

Location: South of most, North of few | Just got back home from my "one nighter" at Amelia, and brought home many truths that I never really knew.
1. ProfBB is really a funny guy.
2. Despite sometimes acting like the North end of a Southbound mule, Al IS a VERY nice guy in person.
3. Al can really play guitar!
4. Just about anyone there can play a lot better than I can.
5. Dave (Toby) actually has a serious side. (Great song Dave!!)
6. Cliff is funnier in person than he is on the board. (and a great guy too!)
7. Serge really knows his way around the JAX airport. With a combined effort, we managed to find and abscond AJ and his luggage.
...and #8....DON'T SLICE YOUR LEFT INDEX FINGER WITH A RAZOR KNIFE THE DAY BEFORE YOU GO TO AMELIA. It really makes it a challenge to play anything.
Thanks to all for putting up with me as I really didn't contribute too much, but just the one night made the 12 hours on the road worthwhile. Really a great bunch of guys! |

We got some killer shots at O'Kanes the other night and word got out that YSBT!
After we were pretty much done and worn out, lots of people were coming up and asking what was happening and really bummed when we said it was over but to check things out Friday night (pre-Huddle House)!
So far, there has been 3 employees who requested extra shifts tonight because they are expecting a crowd.
Wish I could take some credit but I believe most of them will be coming to see Matt, Steve, Temp and the rest of the All-Star Kaman Band |

There are a few I can't/won't post until certain people have made it home.
Until then... who do you want to see? |

Location: Tennessee | I'm just flat out energized. And it's not the four shots of espresso I tend to injest a couple of times a day. I don't want to work, I just want to bang on the guitar all day. Shoot ... I'll probably be up half the night for the next month just working through all the possibilities that opened up for me over the past five days. Friday we covered two to three days worth of stuff. Saturday was an even more accelerated learning experience. There was a killer clinic (of sorts) Thursday night at O'Kane's ... featuring a whole bunch of really great players too numerous to mention individually - and one kazoo-laden Monkees medley that brought down the house. There was another killer clinic Friday night involving the best of the best in acoustic guitar-land, fueled by heaping plates of Sonny's and some really special grilled Bratwurst, and fortified by assorted lubricants highlighted by none other than gen-u-wine 'shine ("No Flame" radius of 15 feet recommended). The Saturday night show was a blast to watch, and some even had our own little Ted Mack moment that bordered on the surreal. Only to be followed by a meeting of the guitaroholics in the 12-Step Room until it was time for the sun to almost rise, the sated to topple over, and the truely twisted to take another bonsai run at Huddle House immortality. With just enough time left over to shower up, squeeze the Visine bottle a couple of times, and work our pulverized fingertips one last time in a "post-mortem" session led by some true masters of the craft including DeBanjo, Templeman, Cliff, Joyce, Davis and Beal. Thanks to Iffy and his lovely enabler, I got to the airport and on my plane. And now all I want to do is go try to play all those things that flew into my head.
So sitting next to me on my flight to Los Angeles was, and I kid you not, 1st Runner-up for Miss America in 2007. And it was anti-climactic. Seriously. |

Even if I edit out the marginal ones, that's still a lot of bits and bites.
We talked about some centeral gathering point for pictures. It might be nice to have these in the original size rather than what the web site will host.
I'd be willing to take point on this. You'd just have to get the photos to me somehow. (Maybe on a disc?) I'll put them in some sort of order and maybe make a DVD slideshow out of them. After that, I can send them out from here. |

Take ProfessorBB (aka: the other Brad) for instance.
Now here's a guy who has flown well under the radar at past OFC events. No more. Wait till you hear his "Guy" song. Until then, you'll just have to be happy with this little "If I Could Turn Back Time" moment.
And never, NEVER let him order for you at a resturant. He has an un-canny knack for not getting what he asks for.
And can I get you anything else you didn't want, sir? |

Absolutely true. We're sitting on the deck waiting for the waitress to take our breakfast orders. This was Friday, Brad's already had 2 or 3 meals screwed up and isn't going to take anymore. When the waitress looks at him he says clearly, "2 eggs, bacon, NO grits, NO toast."
The waitress starts writing, then says, "I'm sorry, sir, we aren't serving toast this morning." pause... pause...
I lean over to Brad and say, "Is there something else you don't want as a substitute for the toast?"
... and of course he GOT the grits... |

Friday night at Beal's house. Steve Sutton (D'Banjo) is retrieving his banjo from Beal's utility/laundry room.
Me: Bill really makes you keep your banjo in here?
Steve: No, he prefers to keep it in the garage with a hose from the car exhaust running to it... |

Here's another Sutton-ism.
Steve was asked... "Is there young & upcoming talent out there that can replace the talent and tradition of the "older" musicians".
He replied... "Replace!?... Nobody even told me I was sick!!" |

I guess we were lucky Serge wasn't at our table! You were UNlucky, Stephen. Just ask the folks at my table. Because I was good-naturedly razzin' the chef for being Portuguese ("what the hell does a Portuguese know about making paella?") he gave us the caramelized rice from the bottom of the pot - which is the best part of the whole dish ;) |

Location: south east Michigan | We join our story in progress.
Much happened in the hours before but that is for another time.
Typical of such evenings we pick up our tale with the very cliche, yet very appropriate....
So 4 a.m. comes around and we find ourselves at the Huddle House.
Now last year there was the "incident" involving a mistaken unpaid bill and the Amelia Island Police Department. If let to stand this would always be an "incident". We figured we had to make the late night Huddle House thing happen if for nothing else the previous "incident" can become just part of a new "tradition". One time is a stand alone incident, the second time becomes part of a larger tradition.
Get it?
So off we go.
Two car loads.
We sit, we talk, we wait for the waitress. When she comes along she sees that Temp has a half bottle of brew that he just decided to bring along with him.
When the waitress comes around she firmly says, "Hey... you got to get rid of that!!"
To which Paul, up to any challenge, firmly replied something to the effect of, "Okay... I will".
Funny thing about Otto.... he looks and acts just the same at 7 a.m., 3 p.m., 11 p.m., and 4 a.m. I suspect that he's an android.
Great music, unbeleivable scotch, and waffles w/ scattered hash browns.
What a night. |

I think you might be right about Otto. That just ain't natchrul.
What a great night. And it's all Serge's fault... |

Being a judge for the songwriters contest was a complicated process. One page of rules and guidelines and another page of about 8 catagories to judge on. You had to pay close attention.

Location: 6 String Ranch | there were quite a few Ovations available. It just seems that these didn't make it to the Lady Fish. For Matt's show on Saturday night we intentionally had just two other guitars up there to keep switchover between people as quick as possible. There was the 08C-Series, CJ-41, and a Tak Opry. |

Location: Scotland | There were around 9 acts just in the second half of the Saturday show, so keeping it simple and using the same guitars for everyone made my life a lot easier running the board. Matt used the 08 and everyone else used the CJ or Tak. But nothing is ever as simple as it seems. At one point the Tak started to sound like crap and I couldn't correct it at the board. Turned out that someone unfamiliar with the relatively complex cooltube preamp had mistaken the cooltube drive level for the output level and turned it down. |

Location: Blue Ridge Mountains | Beal, you always have a smorgasboard of guitars available...it's an incredibly generous thing to do and it is really appreciated by those who travel (thanks to the restrictions imposed now on carry on's and not wanting to check a guitar...thats understood)as well as those who may want to try a guitar they have been wondering about...Since I drove I brought three Adamas w/me last year and they made the rounds as well... there definatly was no shortage of fine guitars available and I have no doubt that it was the same this year...
BTW, the Tak that Steve played when he and Temp accompanied me for the Wind song was one of the finest sounding guitars I've heard (of course the fact that Steve is a Monsta sure helped)...it cuts right though my '08C that Temp was playing and my 1688...not sure of the model but very nice...
I'd love to have a nice cool tube equipped model...one day... |

I wasn't having any performance anxiety until I took my first strum, Matt winced and plucked a string, winced again, and Paul came running up from the board and said "you sound like shit". It went downhill from there. ;) |

Just goes to prove, if it ain't broke don't fix it, and if you are unfamiliar with a piece of equipment that's working just fine, then leave it be. Neither myself or Matt were correcting tuning, we were trying to get the cooltube back to where it was when it sounded great.
As for the bed-linen references, I was extremely well-behaved throughout. |

...except maybe for the open container in a motor vehicle. I'm sure (mostly) that was unintentional.
...of course, chugging half a beer in the Huddle House was a little naughty. Just a bit. But he was justified in that the waitress did ask him to get rid of it.
...but the joke about the kid with ADD was unforgivable... |
