Well, now that some of you had the opportunity last week to see/feel/play a REAL "Q", . . . any impressions??

Smooth-EVERYTHING.

Top/Bowl/Neck is ALL Carbon-Fibre.

No "heel" on the neck (that runs THRU the inside of the body to the endpin).

so, if the 2080 is smooth and the Q is smooth, then where was moody when all this smoothness was going on?

and i've been anticipating hearing from others about the Q too. i know professor digs it and says he would order one if available. at least, that's what he told me in a PRIVATE message.

2080 is not "smooth".
It's not AS textured as the other Adamai,
it's kinda' like a UTE top.

You (sitting in Hawaii) probably had more insight as to what was "going on" in the room than Moody (who sitting right behind me) . . .

really? i figured the 2080's top was similar to the W597 i used to have. i played a ute at the southern jam and i recall what the top was like on it. thanks, cliff. a 2080 is the other option i am looking at if i can't score the collings right now.

That guitar is STILL way ahead of it's time and it's what? Almost Ten years old now?

I personally think it the most innovative thing Ovation has ever done.

Sounds good too.

I'd buy one and asked Al several times to up his efforts.

Extremely lightweight and easy to play. I played Q10 most of the time and it sounded very woody and this was with slightly rusty strings. I managed to snag Q8 for a few brief moments when Cliff was digging through the cooler and with the new strings on Q8 is sounded even sweeter.

We know it can be done. What's a custom shop for if not to satisfy the few...... At least they could give Al a price that would scare us all away.

U681 is a texture painted graphite top
2080 is an unpainted graphite top
Q is a smoothed and buffed graphite top

I only played it a little but it was very nice.

Hind sight looking back to Ovations situation when this was developed (2000?) I can understand why they didn't bring it to market. As good as it is, it was wildly expensive by Ovation standards ($5999) and would appeal to a very limited audience. How many would they actually sell? Remember this was pre-OFC days. It was probably a wise business decision to kill it.

If by some miracle Al does come up with a limited run, would I buy one? I don't know. For the 5, 6, 7, whatever thousand it might cost there are a lot of other things you can do with that money.

buy another collings?

Dave, that's exactly why I said the factory could at least give us a price to scare us all away.

At 5-7000 I would probably pass also but at least I would have the option based on the price.

Does the Q have a truss rod? The CA I have is all carbon fiber, no wood at all even the bridge and fret board, and since the neck is esentially one piece with the body, it has no truss rod. You could float this thing in a pool for a week, and other than the strings rusting, there wouldn't be a thing wrong with it, and...it would still be in perfect tune. I would think the Q would be the same construction.

I played both, and was impressed. Light is exactly on. The heaviest part of this guitar would be the preamp I would want dropped into it. I wasn't impressed with the stealth black. Maybe some Elite T flames judiciously placed to cover some of the black? Then again, maybe the paint would affect the tone of the otherwise pure and presumably polished carbon. These are experimental guitars at the edge of materials technology. It was an honor to have an opportunity to play them.

The Q was a very cool guitar. Very light and extremely comfortable to play but with an absolutely huge sound.

If they were making them, $6,000 would probably be too steep for me. At $4,000, I'd probably start saving!

It's a different animal.

No Jim, there is no t-rod.
At the time these would have been around $10,000 and that was in 97-98. There were maybe 10 playable examples. I think around 2000 they had the ones with the wavey sound holes. Don't know how many of them there were. They were OK but not the same animal at all.
It's well said to say they are ahead of their time now, and this is ten years after.

I think there was a Q hanging in the repair area of the factory when we toured last year. At least, I remember asking about that guitar and being told it was a Q. It looked killer, but I didn't take it down. The top was red sparkle painted and it sort of "bursted" over the edge and down the sides. Or maybe it was the back that was painted and it bursted up over the edge? Anyway it looked damn cool.

$10k you say, Beal? More than I'd spend on one, but I only buy Al's left over stuff (strangely it's always a great bargain and turns out to be an exceptional instrument), so that's not saying much. Still...very cool guitar and it's interesting to hear people's thoughts on actually playing one/them.

10 was just a suggestion. It never got far enough along to have the "what should we sell it for" discussion.

An interesting observation about the clinic, I didn't see or her much AvsB comparisions of guitars, the focus seemed to be much more on the music and each other, which is a good thing. Maybe I just missed it cause I was busy caught up in enjoying it and making sure it all went smoove.
I refer back to Lanaki's question about what did Matt think about the 75 when he played it. I don't recall that he said anything at all. He used my C-10 for most of the class and it worked well, the brightness of the guitar could cut through all 25 of us trying to noodle through what he just showed us.

"twang twang twang twang twang" (Matt playing off color notes, reminiscent of fingernails scratched across a blackboard, to get everyone's attention, when we got a little rowdy)...it sure did cut through Beal.

Seriously though, the C-10 was a great soundin git. How could we have forgotten a hands on comparison with all of those wonderful guitars in one place. Too much fun I reckon.

That does need to be on the list next time.

hmmmm.....maybe we can do a mini-comparison at he SS Jam II. Some great gits comin, but not like there was at the Guitar 'd Gras.

The Q's were wonderful: light as a feather and sounded HUGE! A beautiful, responsive sound. I was very impressed...I thought the black was fine...of course I like Black guitars...

The C-10 was one of the most impressive guitars at the clinic in my opinion: I had never heard a Collings before and Matt made this one just sing! The classroom videos of Matt playing it are just great.

BTW, we're looking at doing DL DVD's to save on the number of DVD's in the set (classroom video alone is nearly 15 hours). Tim is working on the downloads and I'm gathering info and quotes on copies...stay tuned for more news on that!
