Does anyone have a preference or input on a decent (but cheap) digital recorder system? Preferably, something that will work with XLR inputs and connect via USB.

I'm mostly concerned with being able to record from mics, as I have a great set of studio mics but no interface for them, and want to be able to record guitars/amps/vocals onto mp3 or wav formats.

Didn't we just talk about this???

Look into the couple models offered by Line 6.
I'm happy with mine.

I guess I should have rephrased the question. If I already have a set of good studio mics, and am not concerned with needing super-portability with a little pocket-size unit, is something like the Olympus LS-10 or Tascam DR-1 still the best choice, or is there a good fixed recorder/mixer unit with software that I can use for about the same money?

I'm happy with my Zoom H4: it has TWO mic inputs in addition to its very decent built-in stero mics. For direct live recording, it's fantastic. Easy to interface with computer and comes bundled with good software. If you like, I can email you a sample of a recording we did with it in the "out-of-the-box" point-and-click mode (gdobrov@luc.edu)

Downside: the Four-track option is complicated by the "techniqe-y" button and toggle switch system.
