Definitely not one of his cherished instruments. |

Yeah. He had an Elite for a short while too.
I had a great evening with him a year or so before he died. Having seen similar Ovation pic's I brought up the subject. He was really dismissive at that point in his life. Very into his Taylor's by then, his last word on the matter was "guitars should be made out of wood".
That aside, really special guy. |

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3bFy9IzcW6A You know, he's not getting a very good tone from that CL. Some people just aren't meant to play Ovations.... |

[Forget for how much, but they were going for more than Elixir's... More than somebody's trash should]
I also think it sux that the Yamaha went for more than they are asking for the Adamas...
But the leaves did get knocked-off the Adamas. |

I too, made a comment like that with a friend of mine, Dan, and soon found out how small the world really is.
It seems that in Dan's early career he had been a Ranch Hand/Chef/Maintenance/Body Guard on John Denver's ranch. He took the Exp. Airplane thing hard. I Googled the report and found it was an unfortunate mixture of fuel tank switch placement and garavity.
But I do enjoy the wit! |

After Denver's death, at a gathering of friends, I was asked to play something of Denver's. I know it was a tacky choice, but I did Forest Lawn...... |

Location: Germany | Capo Guy is right, it was offered on ebay in February 2006. There was a 35k bid but the auction ended with the reserve not met. Don't know if it was sold or not. Anyway, this was the seller's auction text:
"In 1971, I moved to Aspen Colorado where the first two people I happened to meet were John and Annie Denver. This was before John had become the well-known entertainer that he is famous for today. Our friendship developed over many campfires and time spent together and in 1975 John asked me if I would work for him. By 1980, I had become John's road manager, political liaison and record producer. The albums I produced were "Seasons of the Heart", "It's About Time", Greatest Hits, Vol. III, and "The Muppets in the Mountains." As John's road manager, I hired Steve Voudouris to be our guitar technician and he introduced John to Ovation guitars. We used them primarily for live concerts as their construction made them basically indestructible and, at the time, they had the best electronics of any system available. John played this Ovation twelve-string guitar in many, many concerts while performing some of his best-known songs including Calypso, Annies Song and Eagle and the Hawk.
Inside the guitar is a Adamas by Ovation sticker. It is hand signed by C.W. Kaman II. Also has - no. 656-94 and at a right angle to these numbers are the numbers 1688-9."
Interesting guitar I'd like to own but would pay not more than one-tenth of what he wants for it.

It was pilot error. The NTSB actually divided the fault between pilot error and a builder implemented change to the aircraft design... with the emphasis on pilot error.
The Long-EZ aircraft is certified "Experimental" because it is a plans built design (not factory built). It actually has an extremely safe record, docile flight characteristics, nearly impossible to stall unless improperly loaded. It was designed by Burt Rutan of Space Ship One fame, one of the preeminent aircraft designers of our time.
The construction plans call for the fuel tank switch to be mounted in front of the pilot... the traditional location. Since the Long-EZ is a "pusher" design (engine/prop in the back), the builder decided it would make the plane safer to avoid plumbing the fuel lines past the pilot location to the front panel, so he placed it on the bulk head behind the seat just over the pilot's left shoulder, deviating from the plans.
Having only owned the plane a few days, John was unfamiliar with the new arrangement. It was shown in the NTSB investigation, that the body twist in order to access the fuel switch could easily cause the pilot to deflect both the stick left/down, and the left rudder peddle at the same time, causing the aircraft to bank and dive.
Cruising at only 500 ft above the bay, concentrating on turning the fuel switch, John literally flew into the water at approximately 130 knots in a matter of seconds.
John was a commercially rated pilot with nearly 3000 hours flight time. But flying is unforgiving of momentary inattention whether by a low time flyer or an experienced pilot.
October 12 1997 was a very sad day. |

It don't take much. |

Location: Blue Ridge Mountains | My first car was a '64 1/2 Mustang coupe...the door lock was located at equal height and just behind my left shoulder...on my first trip with my new drivers license, I tried to lock the door while driving...I tried using my elbow and eventually turned to lock it with my left hand...I involuntarily moved the wheel to the right when I turned and the next instant the car dropped into the ditch on its side...fortunately I wasn't going fast and little damage was done...one of the hardest things I had to do was call my Dad to tell him...
It can happen in an instant and that’s what happened to John's plane...
Yes, it was an extremely sad day...he had a great gift…and he used it well…so did Harry Chapin… |

To Princess Di: Rich bitch, lived the high life and still couldn't be happy. No sympathy.
To John Denver: This was the man who wrote and sang many of the significant songs of my adolescenthood. I was cut to pieces by his death. |

Location: Indiana | I was playing a restaurant gig in Ft. Meyers Florida in 1990. Four hour cover job, dinner background music...
I did Cat's in The Cradle, moved along to something else, may be Taxi. Took a smoke break and an older gentleman in a polyester suit came up, extended his hand and said, "thanks for playing my sons music". I was lost for a minute until I caught his last name, Chapin.
A few weeks later, he came back with Harry's wife Sandy, and Big John Wallace of the original Chapin band. That lead to an invite to a concert with brother Steve doing Harry's parts with the Chapin band, and a party afterward.
I had all the more respect for Harry when I met the people that he surrounded himself with in life.
The most telling thing I ever heard about Harry came from his mega star manager, Ken Kragen. He said the worst thing he could say about Chapin was that, every time he got him a career making booking, it inevitably conflicted with some charity event Harry was committed to.
That's a pretty sweet legacy. |

It takes a lot of talent for one man with a guitar to hold an audience. He did all his hits plus some newer material. Not only did he have a great voice, he could play guitar. |
