Location: Michigan | do you have a personal favorite color or finish that you favor on a particular guitar
if you were going to have a custom ordered guitar what guitar would it be and what finish would you have on it
i like a white & natural finish on solid bodys
(gibson sg or fender telecaster)
i like transparent cherry on a semi hollow body
(gibson es 335 epiphone casino )
any color on an ovation or adamas a/e
except for white or black.
.. imho .. ovation does offer the best colors that i can think of on any brand of guitar.GWB |

| Black. No fretboard binding, minimal bling. Don't care about the finish one way or the other.
Natural is fine, red is tolerable, blue is unacceptable. No bursts at all, thanks. |

| Natural, with vintage toner, like this:
I love bursts on solid bodies (like Les Pauls), but on an acoustic, a burst finish make it look like cheap guitars which are spray painted to cover lousy wood. Show me the grain (or carbon fiber)! |

Location: Hot Springs, S.D. | I really don't care what a guitar looks like. To me, playability is the most important factor. If it's easy to play, I sound better. The next most important factor is the tone of the guitar. After that, I suppose I would prefer a natural finish, but it seems that in my life, I am destined (based on the other criteria) to play black guitars. My old Legend was picked because of sound. (Of course, because it is an Ovation, it is highly playable.) I had a black Les Paul once too. And now that I have that incredible black LX that I bought from BT717, I don't even mind the fingerprints.
Come to think of it, My Morgan Monroes are yellow. I HATE the color yellow. When I first saw one, I thought "What an ugly guitar!" Then I strummed a chord and bought it on the spot. Low comfortable action and incredible tone.
I used to have an absolutely beautiful Ibanez artcore hollowbody. It was what they call an "antique violin" finish. But when I played the Hamer, I bought it and sold the Ibanez. It is a sunburst and it is pretty too, but even if it had been ugly, I would have bought it.
Then there is my Aria classical. Gorgeous wood on the back and sides, but the top has scratches, gouges, and cigarette burns. I paid 35 dollars for it, and when someone offered me 500 for it, I turned him down. It sounds too good to sell. |

I like to see the grain.
I can see a burst of some kind in my future. Someday. |

Location: Weaverville, NC | If I could order a custom from Ovation I would get a 6 string with a slightly narrower neck than stock with a ebony fret board with a translucent oyster metallic milky white finish! I would also get pearl inlaid machines with a satin nickel finish. Oh yeah............the markers on the fret board would be the same color as the guitar top in mid depth bowl.
And the top with the epaulets or angel wings as I call them that are inlaid and a bluish/gray in color!
Sort of like the ME guitar but my own creation. |

Location: GA USA | For me it would pretty much be sunburst all around. I love a tear drop burst on an acoustic. In general, an acoustic with a natural top bores me. I'm much more superficial than most of you, and a guitar's appearance is very high on my list of requisites when I'm shopping.
One exception I can think of is that (coming out of left field) a Peavey T-60 looks better in natural that in burst to me.
I prefer:
Les Paul: a more subtle burst than the bright yellow to red look
SG: Cherry
Flying V: Red
Strat: 3 tone burst with maple fretboard
Tele: butterscotch or natural with maple fb
(On a Fender, I like the yellowish vintage looking maple, not the white fresh-cut look)
Mosrite: burst
Ric: Fire-Glo burst - very pretty!
Deacon: burst (Mishka's 12er is gorgeous)
Viper: burst
Hollow body: burst
Other than that I haven't really thought much about it. |

But, the gloss black Al DiMeola is a really great looking guitar. As are many of the Adamas, such as the red bursts. |

For Adamas, I love beige and the custom color (dark blue / beige) that I choose for mine ... ;)

Bear Claw Spruce is just Natural with stretch-marks.
My Viper has a sorta Tobacco Burst that is nice...
the 1860 has a subtle sorta honey-burst thing going on.
The Epiphone has a Teardrop Burst thing that is sorta...'eh?!'
I said all that to say that I like New England Burst and Adamas Reverse Blue Burst.
Although I have never owned either. |

| These are the 3 that I have and this is how I like them to look; plain finish, dot markers if any and and no bling whatsoever. I particularly like the warm colour on my Ovation. The Book Elite that went to Australia recently is about the limit for me in terms of ornate design - I wish I could have got that guitar; another one I'd like to have is a mint condition 1960s Baladeer shiny bowl and that would be about it.

Location: Tennessee | Like others have said, it depends. On Elite style guitars, Cherry Cherry Burst can't be beat. On round holes, I like the -7 Nutmeg on my JL3. Beal's other Collings, the D with the burst, varnish and baloney could be the most stunning I've ever seen. The Vintage Orange on the Newport is gorgeous. The recent Amber FireGlo from Rickenbacker could be the coolest finish ever. And I am very partial to Surf Green with pearloid. But I am not a fan of most of the "vintage toner" colors - they always look to me like someone who used too much spray on tan and now look jaundiced. |

Especially if it's an Ovation and there's some nice figuring in the spruce.
No need to gild the lily. |

I've also been partial to Fender's Olympic White with a slight translucence over an ash body and 50's butterscotch blonde with a black pickguard. Just about anything from Hamer looks stunning. As I said, I like just about any color. |

For wooden tops like the Custom Legends definitely barnboard:
Nutmeg and Tranparent burgundy are nice as well.
For Adamas brown (-9) or beige (-7).
NO blue guitars for me!
Other than Ovation depends on the wood that's used. On my Martin D-35 JC2 i love the black finish!
Best regards,

Other guitars, don't really have a favorite. Some look good in burst, others natural, others in colors. Frankly, I've never cared for the glitter paint or reverse bursts of the Adami, but I know I'm in the minority, especially in this company.

Alder can be natural gloss or painted any color, preferably white, black, tabacco burst or red.
Poplar has to be painted white, black, tabacco burst or red.
Mahogany, stained slightly Red or natural.
Maple natural, white or black
Spruce: natural
Adamas top; anything; doesn't matter
Mosrite type; again anything
Hollow body type: violin burst
and the list goes on ....

Ovation has a Green... I don't know if it is a Nice Green, but it is green...
This was my 1771 which I referred to as Cadillac Green.
