Location: South of most, North of few | Johnny stopped by our campsite today on his way back from the Keys, and we got a chance to A B the 97 collector and the parlor I just got from War Eagle. The 97 of course has a 12 fret slot head neck with the bridge located lower on the top and my parlor has a 14 fret solid peghead neck with the bridge situated closer to the sound hole. I was surprised to find that the parlor sounded like it had a little more "umph" to it with great balance. I always liked the 97, and I love a slot head, but I actually preferred the sound of the parlor to it. Johnny, whats your take? |

Location: Florida Central Gulf Coast | First of all, the burst on TJ's Parlor is THE epitome of a vintage matured burst. I can't properly describe the character that top has and do it justice. I would have bought that puppy just for the burst. Absolutely beautiful!
We took turns doing immediate A vs. B vs. A vs. B acoustic comparisons. The Parlor had a definite edge over my '97C in what I call presence. It just had more harmonics, both high and low strings. Full and rich it was!
Actually, I was a bit disappointed in that my 97 didn't come through like the Parlor. So naturally, I mentally fell back on the ol' 'old strings' (which they are) excuse.
So in order to ease my 'ego bruise', I now offer to buy two sets of strings of Jim's choice and try the 'match' again.
What's not to like with any parlor sized Ovation? One really neat feature of TJ's Parlor was the OP-24E preamp. It has an \'E note only\' tuner! This was the first one I've seen and was impressed once Jim rediscovered how to activate it.
Bottom line? Sweet, sweet Ovation Parlor (just a touch of jealousy intended). I can't believe Keith let Jim steal it.
... and now for the rest of the story... I've never seen TJ look so good! Just remarkable... Jim will post pics when he gets home. Right, Jim?!?!? |

Oh Boy!
I can't wait to hear a 14 fret peghead with a CVT top.... Approximately 6 weeks before I can post pics. ;) |

iffy,
Can't you keep The Ol' Trader out of the face paint? Heading up I75, I called Jim and asked if he had the beer on ice and I'd be there in 90 minutes. He said "That's great. I gotta go to the pool for face painting and should be back by the time ya get here". Actually I thought he was going to be painting faces. Noper, it was a 'Paint Your Dads Face Day'. He let Paul, his fine son, do a demented Kiss job on him. NEAT!!!
I pulled in the campground and thought that TJ had some consumed some left-over Smokey Jam 'Mason jar tea'. He could hardly play the gits, in that the paint was drying and he was scratching like an ol' hound under the front porch.
I'd still like to do a rematch with newly restrung gits... But that burst is just slap dab lovely! |
