Location: closely held secret | I've had both, but I couldn't tell you what the difference was tonally.
Youtube audio is probably not the best way to judge. Maybe someone (Mike?) could post a couple better quality examples. |

Tru-Balance as I understand is = Balanced -Configuration ,which means that there should be a 3 pin connector or XLR ..
1 pin is Hot ..
another Cold ..
and the Last is Common ( Earth )
Hi-Output has a Jack..
with a Jack there is a ..
Hot connection ( Tip of Jack )..
Cold is Sleeve.
With Tru-Balance Ya will achieve a Cleaner ( BETTER ) sound , A Must at high levels to Avoid Hum and Hiss and to minimize Distortion.
In order to Utilize that Tru-Balance , Ya MUST use an Amp. that has an XLR connector ,just like with a Mic.input on a mixer .

Location: Scotland | Tru-balance was a marketing term applied to a short-lived Ovation pickup where the piezo elements were bonded into a synthetic comensated saddle, narrower than the original pickup but wider than the Thinline (which was introduced a little earlier) The Tru-Balance just about replaced the original pickup for a few years from the late 90's. The name alluded to it's "superior" string-to-string balance characteristics, not the fact that it required a balanced output. It was usually found on higher-end guitars some of which had the Optima preamp, which did have a balanced output but of course also had a regular unbalanced output. (By the way balanced configuration is 2 hots, one of which is 180 degrees out of phase, plus a common earth)
The Tru-Balance sounds a little different to the Original pickup, and is a little lower in output but I definately prefer the original tonally. In my experience the Tru-balance would "quack" long before the OPP. If anything the Tru-Balance, having less mass the the OPP was arguably better for the acoustic tone, but we're splitting hairs. The fact that the Tru-Balance is no longer available and lasted only a few years should tell you something. |

,I was wondering if maybe Stereo was incorporated , but thought prob. not , ..
XLR has 1 ) Positive = Hot
2 ) Negative = Cold ( 180 Phase -shift yes )
3 ) Common = Ground
Let`s Not split hairs no ,...
So when Not Balanced , then what`s the XLR for ?
( Sorry PEZ , Do n`t have a git like that , only observed it from far away ,and Assumed something else )

So when I observed the XLR , it was correct to assume the Balanced -Config. , .. associated it with Tru-Balance , which , as pointed out , is something else ..

Location: Tennessee | I have Tru-Balance on my 2000C and my CL12 ... both with the Optima. I can't tell you whether it's the pickup or the preamp, but they both sound great plugged in. But then, so do my other Ovations for the most part.

As far as how it sounds, you can listen to the song Nowhere Man on my ning page here: bobbo\'s ning page . The acoustic guitar on the song is the 2000C with the XLR output going directly to the recording machine. Warning: I am a very crappy sound engineer so take it for what it's worth. |
