Location: Utah | This is one of those "when it rains it pours" situations, in a good way. After several months with no hint of finding a new band to play in, I was starting to wonder if it would ever happen. Then, in one week, three invitations to audition.
The one of most interest is an existing band in need of a lead guitarist and backup vocalist. Well, lead guitar is not my strength, not is singing. But, I can do both with a lot of effort and practice.
So on Monday I audition with 3 songs from their existing set lists, none of which I have ever played before. No problem, just whip up a Clapton blues solo, a country slide solo (I don't even own a slide yet...), and a punk solo. And, do some backup harmonies with their female vocalist.
This is way, way out of my comfort zone, but I'm gonna do it anyway. Now, where's that Valium? |

Work on the female vocalist.
If you can get her on side, you're in like Flynn!!
Good luck Mate!!

So if you and the lead singer, male or female, can "sync" then the rest is just frills and good lighting!
Break a string! Or you know, whatever... |

And if it doesn't work out, you haven't lost a thing. And Woody is right, the chemistry is more important than the accuracy when you're trying out. If it feels right, the music will be good. Let us know how it works out, we're pulling for you. |

Location: Utah | Thanks for all the support and the suggestions to court the female singer. I'll do my best not to be the "creepy old guy", though.
The band is a bunch of similar aged guys to me plus a "younger woman", whatever that means. They play classic rock, blues, R&B, modern country, and at least one punkish 90's song. Lots of Clapton and CCR, plus some Bonnie Raitt, Free, White Stripes, Aretha Franklin, Beatles, SVR, etc.
I've managed to get the 3 audition songs down to a passable level. If nothing else, this will be a practice audition for future auditions.
The more I talk with the other guitarist the more I like the guy and his attitude. |

The guys are all a lot of fun and very good musicians. The female vocalist couldn't make it, so the three songs that they asked me to prepare to play for the audition, which all are sung by the female, couldn't be played.
So, it started off a bit awkward. They'd ask if I knew a song, and I'd say no. Then I suggested a song, but none of them knew it. The other guitarist showed me in warp speed the chord changes for various songs and then the band would launch into it and I'd try to pretend to keep up.
We jammed to Clapton's "Cocaine", with the lyrics changed to "Rogaine". That one was fun and we sounded pretty together.
I must not have sucked too bad because they invited me back next week. |

Can one hire groupies, too? I need groupies. Female groupies that write my name across their chests in black Sharpie and post the pictures on the internet. And I need some kind of signature costume, like a cowboy hat, high platform shoes and a sequin jacket.
Being a rock star is going to be a tough job, I can tell already! |
