What's with the green, double underlined links?
They seem to appear in random places, even in signature lines.
They send you some goofy game site.

BTW... I did send an e-mail to Miles.

Dave... in your post above the word "Phoenix" is green and double underlined. If you click on it you're sent to a "Sushie" game site.

oops... now it's gone.

Que the Twilight Zone theme.

It might be just on your end Brad. I don't have a hyperlink showing at "Phoenix", and i don't see anything unusual either.

Your browser's been hijacked, Brad. See if you get the same result with a different browser (FireFox, IE, Chrome).

In any case, try running SpyBot - it's free and will clean up a lot of other junk besides.

Be very cautious about selecting spyware programs. There are some out there that are scams. They don't do anything but tell you that you have a lot of problems and then they "fix" them but in actuality they are malware and cause problems. So stay with one from a "trusted source".

Spybot has been around for years and if Waskel suggests it, it's good enough for me.

Scott, SpyBotS&D has been around for years. It's one of the most trusted and used freeware programs out there. It has a few bugs, but it's not malicious.
However, there are others I've also used, some with better features and some not so much.
Brad, check these reviews and take your pick - they're all safe.

SpyBot-Search & Destroy

Trend Micro HiJackThis

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware

...oh, and thanks.

Brad - in addition to Spybot, I also run Super Antispyware and Spyware Blaster as background processes. What one single product doesn't catch, one of the other ones will.

Superantispyware is good, too (though I'm always suspicious of software with 'super' in the name). Spyware Blaster is good, but it focuses mainly on IE. On FireFox, Chrome or Safari it's not as effective.

Lavasofts AdAware has a free version.

Other than that, BUY an f-secure product from datafellows.

Clueless fanboys at risk.

Direct quote from the article:

"In fact, Mac users may be especially vulnerable as so many of them seem to have such a laid back attitude to the virus problem. The Mac malware problem is, of course, much smaller than the Windows one - but that doesn't mean it's non-existent, and Apple fans would be wise to start taking security more seriously."

The party is officially over.

http://www.techno360.in/the-safari-browser-hacked-in-10-seconds/

Get the right tool for the right job. If it's a MAC os, cool, if it's a Microsoft OS, cool, If it's Linux, cool, Chrome too...

The OS "competition" ended a while ago, that's why Apple focuses so much effort on iPods, why Microsoft focuses on Microsoft Live and Google is focusing on Chrome.

Those that argue about Microsoft vs Apple remind me of those who still argue about the North and the South. It's entertaining in small doses, but if you really wanna have fun... next time you attend a reinactment, do us all a favor and use real bullets.

I recently upgraded my Trend Micro antivirus software and started seeing website links highlighted in green. Turns out the new AV software had installed add-ins to IE and Firefox to highlight whether links were considered 'safe' or not.

Having found it, I was able to disable the add-in. Not only did it mess with websites' appearance, but it kept causing the browser to hang or die.

I got free Norton trial with this computer... Well, free for awhile.
So far I am satisfied with it. I seems to actually stop some infiltrating crap.
Well, at least it 'tells me' that it stopped some crap.
Once I have to pay for it it will be about $60 a year. There are cheaper choices out there...
But I was paying $5 a month for Clearwire Security System and it Sux.
I have 'Clear' which is WiMax, which means it is over-the-air, and possibly vulnerable.

Just thought that I would share that, and maybe fish for input about Norton... :D

I always hated Norton AV. It gets deep deep deep into the registry and is nearly impossible to get rid of. Windoze updates can have serious problems because of the tampering. It also can cause or have conflicts with other programs because it gets its hooks into the tiny crevasses of the system.

Perhaps other AV software does the same thing, but we seemed to have more problems with the computers running Norton

On the few PC's we have left, we run free AV programs. They seem to work and we don't have virus problems or the magnitude of other irritating problems. Maybe Norton was too comprehensive, but we are happy with the free stuff now.

On the old Dell laptop that we use for recording, I frequently forget to enable the AV when getting online, and we haven't had any nasties at all on it.

The MAC though leaves me much happier in all categories.

Not sure about the 'recent' Norton package, but it sure did eat up processing memory back in the days.

I tend to go with what my provider offers...

Steve's right on about NAV. You have problems and need to uninstall it, you better have some serious registry tools handy.

Plus it's a memory hog and just plain sucks as an AV. I could have the corporate NAV free via my work for my home machine, but I run Avast at home because it catches many more threats.

When I got my latest computer, I bought NOD 32 for anti virus, spyware, etc. Seems to be working pretty good and it was recommended by several sources. Didn't cost a whole lot either....

F-Secure Anti-Virus 2009 or F-Prot . Either of these have been around since the late 90's used more by professionals for server and enterprise in the early years, and neither of them OEM so they are not as big a target. In fact early on, F-Secure used FRISK's F-Prot anti-virus search engine for their anti-virus product. The free DOS version of F-Prot was the staple of every network and PC engineers emergency toolkit to save PC's from things that got past Norton, Macafee and Microsoft.

I have used both over the years, currently using F-Secure.

Thanks for the help everyone.
It was my system. I think I got it licked now.

Isn't it funny how when something like this happens the first thought is that it just can't be MY problem? It's just got to be the other guy.

Brad, I think what you're experiencing is the brand new IE browser's add-ons.

It's in a recent Windows update. It's also annoying.
