Location: south east Michigan | You know how you can hear a song a ga-zillion times but never really listen to it? Until you pay some real attention it's just background noise.
While on vacation the "old" Norah Jones song, "I Don't Know Why I Didn't Come" played on the radio. I must have heard it a hundred times before but when I took the effort to listen I came to really appreciate it. Her recorded voice is so natural and un-processed. I guess in the old days they would call her a "torch singer".
Sara Bareilles is another good example.
And just to open up the discussion….
Bonnie Raitt… “Let’s Give’em Something To Talk About” is a longtime favorite.
Sheryl Crow…. Not that she really has the pipes but I like the timbre and character if her voice.
Cyndi Lauper…. Maybe an acquired taste but this chick has the pipes !
Natalie Manes…. Of the Dixie Chicks.
Jewel…. Even back in her day she was an acquired taste. Liked her more then than now.
Alanis Morissette…. More emotion and qwerkiness than singing talent. |

When Madonna emerged I thought of her as a K-Mart knock off of Cyndi. Still do.
And I know the lady is reputed to have some "issues", but my current favorite female vocalist is Susan Boyle. She does, however, head a long list of favorites in that category. |

Funny I was just listening to Bonnie Raitt the other day also and thinking the same thing.
A couple of others I really enjoy:
Kathy Mattea
Ricky Lee Jones

Location: Right now? | My new favorites are Brandi Carlile and K.T. Tunstall;
G8tr, I LOVED Eva Cassidy. "Song Bird" made me cry for three years after my divorce!!
I have so many favorites; I LOVE Dolly Parton, sparkles and all, and have since my Mama played her records from when I was a wee thing.
And of course there is Kathy Mattea (yeah, what Patch wrote), Linda Ronstadt, Emmy Lou, SOME (but not much) of Melanie Kafka, Martina McBride, Jewell, Eliza Gilkyson, Natalie Merchant, Susan Tedeschi, and also Patti Griffin is incredible. Listen to her sing "Oh, Heavenly Day". Madonna can sing as good as her producer can bend her voice to a song, IMHO. I like "You'll See" and "Take a Bow" by her, not much more.
I remember seeing Roy Orbison on some talk show and he performed "Crying" with K.D. Lang. After the performance, when he was being interviewed, he kept referring to K.D., who was sitting right beside him. Having never heard of her, when Roy kept referring to 'she'; for the life of me, I could not figure out where the "she" he was speaking of was, lol, all the time wondering who that weird looking guy was sitting next to Roy. She has some voice though, and I love to listen to her sing!
I still LOVE to listen to Mahalia Jackson sing "Troubles of the World", and why hasn't anyone said anything about ARETHA?!! GEEZ! Too many to mention, really ... gonna go pull up my iTunes now ... |

Yeah, her one hit song may have sounded a little silly, but if you heard the rest of the album you would have been impressed. She died of breast cancer when she was in her early thirties. If she had lived longer I believe she would have become legendary. |

Actually made me wonder why that choose that one to release and THEN how it became such a monumental hit. Must be someone knows something I don't, eh...?
(And you can feel free to let that one slide, mister - and you all know who I'm talking to...) |

Location: Cicero, NY | With that said, I'll weigh in with some of my favorites. I love a solid, strong voice with emotion (one notable exception being Allison Krause) and that sends me to Patsy, Susan Tedeschi, Bonnie, Melissa E., Martina, Linda Ronstadt, K.D., Cyndi Lauper (who had GREAT pipes) and even Kelly Clarkson but give me Aretha or Ann Wilson any day of the week and I'm a happy guy. Soft and emotional or bold and brash - those ladies could bring it home AND cook the bacon. |

And my nomination for best vocal performance EVER for a female singer goes to Clare Torry for her work on Dark Side of the Moon. She gives me chills every time I hear "The Great Gig in the Sky". |

This Lady can SING! Talk about Pipes; Talk about range; talk about emotion...forget American Idol...she would have found a way without it...she is incredible!
Also, if you can get her away from the mundaine, Joss Stone...whoa...she can make Janis Joplin pale in comparison...but again, only if she has the material to really cut loose...she needs better management and material...imho |

To Brad's point, Nora is really good and I like all the slide and other resophonic guitars on her recordings. My wife really likes her and has worn the grooves off her cds. If I never hear NFJ again it will be too soon. |

...and Annita Baker Detroit's own... Annita Baker.
Her kids used to frequent the Skate Park my kids went to.
Different tastes, different styles.
What started me thinking on this was how often I might hear a song and how few times I really listen to it. That and just how un-processed the first two examples sounded. |
