We're at the 43rd annual family vacation at the Jersey Shore this week, and after telling my wife about Mike's great news on his songs charting, my sister asked how I had met him.

I said, "On the Ovation Fan Club internet forum".

She asked, "Why would people want to be on a forum like that"?

I tried to tell her about how members get together at weekend Matt guitar clinics, or scope out guitars nearby so a distant buyer can decide if he/she wants to bid on it, or will hand carry a guitar overseas to help a member out, etc.

But in the end, the OFC is un-explainable. I just said "I've made some great friends that I've never seen".

Thanks guys and gals for being beyond description.

When I first announced to my family I was heading up to Smokey's Jam, the kids asked how I heard about it. They were somewhat leery about their Dad getting involved with an 'on-line' group.

Of course after I broke my ankle up yonder, there was even more concern. But since then, all of my family members have met and been truly impressed with one or more of ya'll.

So yes, 'unexplainable' is true. Ya have to experience the OFC!

I just tell them that it's a group of mostly middle aged men that enjoy swapping pictures, telling lies on the Internet and looking forward to meeting each other out of State.
What could go wrong with that?

Funny stuff but true. I sit there with my laptop in the evenings and my wife will stroll by and remark "I think I have lost you to that Ovation place".

Not true, but I do have fun telling her the funny stuff that happens here as well as the heartwarming stories. And... she has a lot of fun at my expense when I take photos of my guitars. :)

Ditto, but I don't get how anyone can play solitaire on the computer for hours, either. SWMBO just worries about how much the next guitar will cost after a get together.

That's the reaction I get from my wife as well. Of course, the only gathering she attended I DID come home with a new guitar. ;)

My wife says that she's glad that I have people to talk with regarding guitars who actually care about what I'm say (shut up Witko!) as opposed to her listening. And when I make reference simply to "the Board", she knows I'm talking about the OFC.

I've made friends here who will be friends long after the Board ceases to exist.....

It can't get any weirder than meeting a German guy in the lobby of an old little hotel in Rothenberg, who brings two beautiful Adamas guitars and spending the next several hours playing and singing American songs from a book he put together, eventually joined by the rest of the Americans in our tour and closing down the bar that night. Loved it. Thanks again, Karl.

Hmm. When I reference "The Board", I'm usually talking about The Wife! The OFC is just the Club.

The rest of it I TOTALLY agree with.

I prefer to think of the decrypting as almost a crossword without the boxes. It's a tough game but, once you get the hang of it, it's kinda fun.

It's like summer camp all year long. A bunch of buddies playing and working on projects and pulling pranks on each other. When one of us gets a care package from home we share it with each other. When one of us gets the homesick blues, we all gather 'round to give comfort. And when summer is over and we all go back home, we stay in touch because the friendships that we made this summer will last a lifetime.

Well, when I told friends that I was going to Poughkeepsie (about 1 hour and 15 minutes from my home)just to try out guitars owned by a guy I met on the internet, they thought I was nuts!

Turns out that guy (Patch) is completely harmless (and great to deal with)!

I've had people help me with my accounting homework too. This forum is truly a great place to be.

Guitarzannie... I know you meant well but I think the last thing a man wants to be described as is... "harmless".
Call us "polite", "interesting", or even "gentleman-like". But never "harmless".
The only thing worse would be to use the term - totally harmless.

Allison, don't I know it!

The Collector's put a small dent into my emergency guitar fund, but dents can be fixed and repaired again and again!

Also, what is cool about this place is that I've gotten invites to go to gatherings, etc. I'm still thinking about seeing if we could have a NY gathering.

You typed too soon Slipkid. Apparently now I'm "harmless but deadly." It sounds like a bad George Carlin joke!

Well, with the internet being what it is, harmless is a good thing! Unfortunately the press doesn't seem to report the good things that go on regarding the internet.

Now being called totally useless is another thing! :D

I have guitars from the Pacific Northwest, Oklahoma, Texas, and Florida, as well as some of the best big brothers a girl could ever hope to have, and a very, very dear sister from South Dakota whom I would never have "met" without the Board. (Aside: hmmm...the guitars are more well-travelled than I am.....)
There's just something about this place that is beyond words, and I mean that in the best way possible. As a card I once got said, "Whenever I think of you, my heart smiles."

There are good and bad sides to everything (just bear with me: I'm going somewhere with this):
The "Bad" side: I am out of room for storing guitars...when I started this I had maybe 5 guitars of different makes and at the time: I had no Ovation as I had sold them all several years prior to bring my bride here from the Former Soviet Union...now I have (on last count) 26 guitars and at least that many have been sold to make way for newer more desired ones: spelled GAS...but my kids are/will be grateful for the legacy in the future...

The "Good" side: What isn't? I have met some fabulous friends and played some fabulous guitars...developed my playing again and even worked on songwriting skills and received encouragement that is both appreciated and needed...as well as attended some world class guitar jams and clinics and met some incredible guitarists and even one really great former gas station worker...we have been able to do some really cool beneath the radar projects to put guitars into the hands of those who are deserving or just need a hand up...I could go on and on for the good...because it really is all good!
What other forum or communication device these days unites persons from all over the globe and keeps us united through a common shared love of all things guitars....I don’t know of a single one quite like this group...I'm proud to be a part....

Call us "polite", "interesting", or even "gentleman-like". But never "harmless".
The only thing worse would be to use the term - totally harmless.

Harmless but deadly is better than silent but deadly :p

Oh well, you play the hand you're dealt I guess.
