| we're hoping for a light season, but already 2 or 3 depressions forming over by Africa... and headed up the trough our way... and just the start of the season.
Frances and Jeanne beat us up pretty badly, over 20,000 in damage to our home, and we wound up living out of a FEMA/Formaldehyde "Bush Brothers' special" Trailer for over 6 months while we put bandaids on a basketcase...
and our employer Term'd us both because we couldn't be at the store to button up their warehouse and offices as we were under a mandatory evacuation, and had children and animals, and a fresh litter of kittens to get away from the storm. They didn't care... just fired us as no-shows, while we had the roof blown off our house, and Shannon lost her entire room/addition...
we've already got our water, tarps, batteries, and food boxes ready and in the tubs and 2 cases of MRE's.
praying for a light season, and hoping these apartment buildings are built better than our old Mobile.... but if it's a cat4 doesn't matter much anyway.
Stay Safe Coasters!

Location: Florida Central Gulf Coast | I know this isn't a 'cane survival/prep site, but I was PM'ed 'bout some preps and I'll share my response.
"I'm a prep nut! But here's my 'short' list besides the items you mentioned.
Ya can't have too many flashlights!
Generator to power fridges/freezers/fans. I have an electric start due to an old shoulder injury. Even Patty could start it if need be. Plus I store no less than 30 gallons of gas with Sta-bil.
I've ran my gen set for three hours two to three times a 24 hour period and had good success in saving our perishable/frozen foods. In fact I let two of my neighbors use it during my 'down time'.
Proper sized extension cords to run inside from the gen set.
Propane for post-storm grill cooking. I have five 20 #ers and a large 100# large tank.
Battery digital TV (I need to get a new one) and a radio or two, shortwave is nice also.
Small batteries and more batteries. I've been stocking up on recharagables and a quality charger. Plus I have three Optima 12 V deep cycles batts in the boat I could use with adapters.
Adapters to fit your 'tronics and small lights to DC power.
Water and more water! Since I have a swimming pool, I purchased a quality water filter for cooking and brushing teeth besides that water I keep on hand.
TP and more TP. It's one item many forget. I also have several NATURAL sponges for when I run out. Have some chlorine for sanitation purposes.
Plastic bags that fit the commode/five gallon bucket.
Go to Ace and buy their small (I think it's a gallon), but quality pump sprayer. Adjust the nozzle to the finest mist possible and use cool water if possible. When you have no air or power to run fans, just spray each other for refreshing heat relief. Works great!
Prep the exterior of your home if possible. This can get very expensive. What I do is just keep my trees trimmed to minimize structure damage. Remove any and all outside objects that can become missiles.
I also insure that my strapped-to-trailer boat is topped with gas (think gen set), fill the bait wells and the bilge with water.
Have an evacuation plan. Never let your vehicles get below half a tank in case of a short notice evac.
Geeze, I could go on and on. But the above are items that can make your life bearable if the power goes out and the water supply is contaminated or disrupted.
I know I've missed some areas, so if ya have any more Qs, LMK."
P.S.: I have to add a caution learned the hard way. Just prior Gabrielle in '01, I parked my SUV outside up close to my garage door for protection. Well, no one warned me about the venturi effect that this would create.
The door was sucked OUTWARD and had to be pounded back in and secured during the worst stage of the 'cane.
Anyone with questions/comments, PM or e-mail me.
There are tons of sites with great prep info. Google is your friend. I'm just trying to relate what has worked for me that some folk may not think of. |

I hate and fear 'arrows' on a storm track projection! Please monitor the 'cones of probability'. If you're in the cone, there's a chance of damaging weather. And as time passes, I guarantee that that cone will move and the predictability accuracy will increase.
Just think of Charlie in '04 that was heading directly for my home. He took a right turn into TJ's area and caught so many unprepared. Charlie then proceeded up inland and caught everyone there off guard. But they WERE in the 'cone'!
Be aware, be safe! |

If one of them get into the gulf of Mexico,I start heading south to run cattle up to higher ground, sometimes that can be a frustrating long ordeal..............good luck |

Folks, like Johnny said, be prepared and watch and listen...If is looks like its going to hit and you can go...then go!
As Violetta said to me after returning from a trip to Russia and the airlines breaking into my luggage at JFK and stealing most camera and computer items: "The important thing is that you yourself were not stolen: everything else is just stuff!" |

Location: Florida Central Gulf Coast | Well, TD4 skirted our county coast last night/early AM. We didn't get any wind at all and nary a drop of rain.
Hopefully ya'll on the panhandle coast will just get some rain. I hear that Texas could really use it.
Stay dry!
BTW, the code for a military nuclear accident is 'Broken Arrow'. |

TJ has my 1680 for a 'TJ set up' and I'm babysitting his sweet 1758. Plus I think you'll get a lot more rain from Claudette than we did!
Nice try though... |

Just to let ya know, Jim did an outstanding job on my 1680 set up. He did a touch up on the nut and put 'bout a half turn on the truss rod. I had already removed one shim, so that was OK.
Man, if ya though is was nice before, you'll absolutely love it now!
I gonna see if I can talk him into a local 'set up' workshop in the future. |
