Location: waukegan, illinois | Hello all. Finally, I found an Ovation Forum. I am a newbie to the OFC. I do need your (the Forum) assistance.
I own a Celebrity CC44 and recently purchased an Acoustic AG60 (60 watt) amp for onstage performances.
The guitar produces feedback at mid to high volume on the 7th position on the 5th ("A")string. This makes it very difficult during practice or live performances. I either need to be a great distance away from the amp (6 feet plus)or lower the volume to reduce or minimize the risk of feedback, never resolving. This make it difficult to hear the amp with drums and bass playing simultaneously.
Is there any way to eliminate the feedback without compromising the quality sound of the guitar at higher volume?
I saw on the Ovation website "Feedback Busters for Multi-Sound Hole Guitars". The music stores in my area do not carry these items. Any help or assitance?

| I don't think that pre amp has a notch filter, which would enable you to find the offending frequency and reduce it's volume. One option is to insert an outboard pre amp into the signal chain such as the Fishman illustrated here:

Before spending any money, why not try plugging the holes with pieces of foam to see if it solves the problem. If you're operating at rock band volume, it might not. But it's worth a shot. |

I have found that the Ovation feedback busters work very well. They are black rubber stoppers that fit into the multiple sound holes.
You can buy them from Al at lostartvintage dot com. He's one of the sponsors of this forum and he will take care of you.
The busters work much better than a notch filter in my experience, because they do not color the amplified sound at all. A notch filter will change the tone of the guitar some. The busters will make the unamplified sound dead, though. So you won't want to leave them in all the time, just use them for amplified performances. |

A very narrow band notch will have negligible impact on the amplified tone while gaining 2 to 3dB headroom before feedback at that frequency. Soundhole bungs only affect the fundamental and can improve feedback-free headroom at that frequency by maybe 2dB if you're lucky.
The B note causing the problem is exactly 124Hz. So pull back any EQ around there, including the onboard preamp. Most LF amp, preamp and board LF-EQ are centred around 80 to 120Hz with a wide enough Q to cause problems either side.
The other issues may just be down to volume level and position of the amp in the room in relatation to boundaries, corners and sound source |

Location: waukegan, illinois | Thanks to everyone who provided me the valuable comments. I placed an order for the "Ovation Airlocks". I will experiment with all the "low cost" suggestions before making another financial decision; like upgrading the guitar to another Ovation model.

I'm not familiar with "Notch Filter" guitar. This is my first guitar in a number of years. I tried to ekk-out a living playing and performing, in my younger years. I'm experiencing a mid-life crisis. Could not afford the Corvette so I purchase an Ovation. Yes, the option is open for a more expensive Ovation. Need to more info on the "Notch Filter".

Location: Scotland | A notch in EQ terms is a steep cut in gain, with ultra-narrow bandwidth at a specific fequency. A few older Ovation preamps (Optima, Op-X, Op40, Op50) have a tunable notch filter which allows a single feedback frequency to be selected and dialled out without screwing up the tone too much. They seem to have ditched this feature on the current preamps, which is a mistake in my opinion. |

Location: Boise, Idaho | The Optima preamps, starting in about 99 had them. I can't think of any that do currently. Get on the Ovation site and look at the discontinued models. There should be a bunch of them in your price range on ebay. |

Location: waukegan, illinois | Hello everyone. Thanks for all the comments and support. The AirLock arrived by UPS 20 minutes ago. I was like a six year old on Christmas day, tearing open the package. After inserting the AirLocks I cranked the amp and guitar. Great, the AirLocks removed the feedback at mid to high volume on the 7th position ("E")on the 5th ("A")string, without impacting the quality of sound. Thanks Alpep. Now I must place an order for a set of the Adamas and the Ovation Phosphor Bronze strings. I am currently using Martin Phosphor Bronze x-light.
Well that's enough chatting for now. Going back to upset my wife and daughter, not quite at full volume. Thanks again to everyone.
