I have never been clear on the output level of a typical Ovation internal pre-amp. Is the output of a typical Ovation line level ? Or, is more amplification needed ?

Thanks for your time

According to the specs, the OpPro series are Line Level outputs, but there are two different versions of line level. There is consumer line level and pro line level. Pro line level is higher voltage and intended for 600 ohm inputs, whereas consumer line level will work into high impedance inputs on amps and effects pedals.

Ovation OpPro are consumer line level. Suitable for stage use without further pre-amplification. But if you want to run into a box with 600 ohm inputs, the Ovation output will be weak. I don't know where you might run into that kind of system, though, where you would be tempted to plug a guitar into it. Perhaps others have had such an experience, but I only find guitar amps and PA systems with 1/4" instrument jacks on them.

Oh dear. Wikipedia is dangerous sometimes. Line Level is any output producing a signal level in the order of 1 volt or more. The "consumer" thing is only really relevant when connecting stuff like CD, Tape machines or Ipods to pro audio equipment.

You seem to be confusing nominal impedance with actual or effective impedance. I am unaware of any mixer, amp or direct box with an input impedance of 600 ohms. Most amp/DI impedances are in the order of 1 megohm while inputs for low-imedance mics are around 1.5 to 2Kohms. The important issue is that the input impedance is higher than the output impedance of the source.

All Ovation preamps have a line-level unbalanced high-impedance jack output. Some have a mic-level balanced low-impedance XLR output too, which is basically an onboard direct box. The Op-pro is pretty low in output compared to many other Ovation preamps, however it's line-level output will interface with just about every amp, mixer or DI box high-imedance input without a problem.

That was a very brief synopsis. I am running to work, but my recollection is that pro line level is defined based on a 600 ohm load, so going into a higher impedance is undefined though expected. Yes, the input impedance should always be several times higher than output impedance at audio frequencies, so we expect inputs to be more than 600 ohms.
