Location: Hanau, Hessen, Germany | Hey everyone!
It is time to share my joy! My FD 14 has arrived today and I must admit... I am speechless. I have never before played a guitar like this. It's simply amazing. The brilliance of sound and the ease with which it lets itself play is absolutely stunning. I am overwhelmed at the moment... (and I am saying all that playing the old strings. I haven't changed them yet - I'm scared the sound of new strings on this baby is going to kill me immediately).
So... ok... I have two questions before I continue playing.
1. I can't find the mysterious Number (xx/50). The Serial is stamped on the back of the head like this:
573118
USA
Since there are no other numbers, is it a custom made FD 14? I will try to contact the previous owner, but I'm not sure if it's gonna work, as he sold it over an agency. I have some doubts that they will give me his emailadress.
2. The Tuners have "made in germany" written on them. Is this spooky or normal? My 1614s tuners have the ovationlogo on them
I will take some photos and record some soundsamples later on to let you share my fun over at the social network ;)
So long!
A very happy

As far as I learned from OFC, Ovation uses Schaller tuners, and Schaller is a German company. Normally the produce them with the Ovation name and logo, still they will most likely be original, just produced without the Ovation signature.
Anyway, since the sound is super, don“t worry about details too much. Enjoy the baby! I am looking forward to your samples.
Regards, Chris. |

I am not worried at all, the guitar is simply incredible. I love it! I'm just curious ;)
I added some photos on my ning-Page.
See them here if you like.

The "573118" is the standard Ovation serial number.
IMHO this guitar is THE best sounding wood-top Ovation. I only sold it because the neck wasn't my cup of tea.

It's such a joy to play and hear it... wow. I have really never played anything like this before... Unfortunately I woke up being ill this morning, so I won't play a lot today I'm afraid :(
@twisted: Thanks. All the photos were actually taken with available light only. I had a beautiful "lightsetup" with the sun shining through the leaves of my walnut-tree ;)

Thank you for those infos. Now that would explain the "made in Germany"-Schallers too. Is there any information on how many were made without unique number? As said before it certainly is the best Ovation and even the best guitar I have ever played and I feel really good to own it :) |

Allow me to push this thread back to the top :D
I'm still very curious about the "number-less" FD14s... Anyone here has a clue?
And taking the chance of pushing up this post, let me also tell you that I changed the strings today... I am speechles.. The sound is really killing me (in a very good way) ^^ I put Adamas 1818 on and... whew.. just amazing... Now I only have to get my homerecording-stuff ready... sigh |

Does anyone know if there were ever any Ovation sales brochures or catalog sheets for the FD-14 model?
I think I've only seen a foreign magazine review on Jerome's site? |

I took it off the wall and played it a bit while Paul was telling me about how he'd probably sell it if Jer would let him and if it hadn't come to him in the special way that it did. And how that Tupperware cat thought they were the best wood top Ovations ever but Moody didn't really see it that way. Then after a few minutes of playing some lead licks behind Paul's performance of "City of New Orleans", The Moody One looked at me and declared it was an awesome sounding guitar and he could never sell it. Too bad because I was going to try and lowball him for it.
Congrats on a fine guitar! |

It states 100 pcs ??? yet the pegheads are stamped xx/50... hmm?
Does anyone know how well it was received at the summer NAMM that year? I'm guessing aside from this group few others know of this model. |

Congrats on a fine guitar! @Stonebobbbo: Thanks a lot for this post. It is exactly what I think of this guitar. It's a "wolf in a sheep costume" (I'm not sure if everyone gets this phrase, it's a poor translation of a common german... uh.. phrase? sorry ^^ - I'm sure there is an american phrase which is more common)
The FD14 looks so simple (and in someway "cheap") and is probably very often understated. But, I am not fooling you, since I own it, not a single day has passed that I haven't played this guitar. I am completly posessed by it's tone and playability. I really can't find any words that would come up to the joy and fun I am having playing her. I spent more of a complete months wage to get it and I really am in financial trouble now, but I don't regret it at all... (I'm getting pathetic, ain't I?)
@galler... dave...
I see what you're saying. I still would love to know more. Is there any way to find out how many "new" models where made and for what cause and what so ever? And is anyone aboard here that has another "unnumbered" FD 14?
Cheers!

Location: Munich, Germany | Meuti,
like Charlie and Dave said - it is (or was) possible for european distributors to order some of those "limited" guitars as special orders.
So happened with the FD14 as well as with the 1651 Ltd. Reissue - that was originally built (100 pieces) for the japanese market only. The so called JL3 (1651 Ltd.) for example was a "regular" model, that had to be specially ordered by dealers, for the german market.
To find out more about it you should check with the KMC distributors - which will be not too easy, since the/some european distributors are no longer Kaman distributors.
Best regards,
Kurt |

mh, seems like it's rather hopeless to get more information then. Oh well, after all it's not that important. It's a great guitar and this is what counts I guess ;) |

Just out of curiosity... I understand the FD designation, but where does the "14" come from on a '12 fret to the body' guitar??? |
