Location: Brighty in Blighty | Hi,
I've started a new thread dedicated to my 1st album, Quadruped. In the past I have created new threads for each new recording for the album but rather than keep adding new threads each time I think it better to have this single thread that I'll update for news/updates etc.
OK so I've added a new sample of a new track, Passage. Passage was recorded with my 2007 BCS Collector, a blend of stereo mic'ing and the pickup (from the Op Pro Studio). It's really a warm up exercise but I like it and so far it's likely to be included on the album.
Plus I've completely revamped the website/MP3 player, much slicker now. This interface is all driven by a config file, simple, elegant yet powerful.
Take a listen here |

Nice work on the album and website!

Location: Chicago | Dunno gh1: "Passage" blew me away sonically. It's the best guitar sound I've heard in a long time; and playing to match. Dweez: all the available tracks worked fine on my box and, even with small speakers, are stunning! It that's a "quadruped" I'm afraid to see what comes charging along on 8 limbs... |

Location: Brighty in Blighty | Hey, thanks for the really positive feedback, much appreciated :) :D  , in fact any feedback is very welcome as long as it's contructive.
It's far too easy to listen to it over and over again and get too critical, equally there is always room for improvement. With that said I really ought to add that I'm not a pro. I'm learning a lot about the recording process as I do this and will look back on this one and think, hell what was I thinking/doing ;) . Also having to record something really does show up flaws in your technique and I'm finding this a great way to hone my technique. Yeah there are fluffs but hey!
Passage was recorded with the 2007 Collector
Harp Strings with the 1763 (nylon string)
Gypsy Davy will be redone as it was a test recording with a Line 6 Variax 300 Nylon and compared to the sound of the 1763 it sounds yukky.
Basically I have about 30 pieces in my repetoire currently (having started 3 years ago) and so as a way of polishing them and moving on to a new batch of tunes I decided that recording them would be a good exercise in itself but also as a way to put them to bed so to speak.
Quadruped is the first batch of the 30 tunes, typically easier pieces and the follow on, Octopod will be the more challenging pieces. So the first two are sort of linked, at least that's how I see it.
So far I'm finding the Ovations a pleasure to record with, long may it continue! :D |

I like the way your webpage lays out. It that some sort of widget you're using to put the music up, and if so what is it? Thanks.
Looking forward to hearing the whole thing when it comes out. I don't play fingerstyle or those kind of tunes, but it sure sounds good and makes me think I'm on the wrong path. |

| Liked what I heard, Dweeze, it's my kinda stuff. Is this for limited distribution among friends/family, or are you seeking a broader audience?
I did notice a sameness in the two tracks, which is fine with me. I could listen to eight more of the same and consider I'd gotten my money's worth.
If, however, you intend to take that extra step, you'll need a little fire and flash in some of the tracks at least. You'll need to wow the acoustic guitarists in the audience; you'll need to make them wonder how you're doing it and clamor for tabs. Why? because the audience for solo acoustic fingerstylists is largely comprised of other solo acoustic fingerstylists. For them, it's more than ear candy. You'll have to make them want to play like you. |

I am well aware I have a LOT to learn but pretty confident that I can do it and be as good as one of the gurus. Yeah it'll probably take the rest of my life but who cares, playing the guitar makes my heart sing.
If I sell a couple great cos it'll help with the costs but if I don't no worries, I'm not in it for the money.
Thanks for the suggestion. Hopefully by next year (album #3) I will be as you say have more fire and flash. |

And I like your plan. When it becomes more of a business than a hobby, the stress squeezes the fun out of it. |

As promised, it was time for the 2006 Collectors to step up to the plate, I think the darker/warmer tone of the 06C suits this piece pretty well, that and some ethereal reverb and it sounds pretty good to me. To be honest the performance is not 100% but for the time being it's passable as I think the overall result is OK.
As with all of these recordings I'm sure at the end of the recording process when I'm ready to master I'll think yuck I can do loads better, performance wise, technique wise and recording wise but hey, that'll be for the follow up album, right? ;)
Up next it's Carolan's Draught on the 07C.
Once again thanks for listening (if indeed you did). |

| OK, Dweeze this is some seriously good stuff. Make sure it comes toe the attention of Stephen Hill of the syndicated NPR show, "Hearts of Space". I know you said it's a limited production run, but if you get it to no one else, get it to him.

Also found the reverb/space sound I wanted for it. OK it's not a natural reverb sound but I think it suits the piece (and reminds me of the reverb the awesome Doug Smith used on one of his tunes).
This isn't a prefect performance but it's close! Will redo again tonight then move onto Carolan's Draught on the 07C.

The accents through out the piece are just perfect and even the triplets are played so clearly..... Just great dweezil - please keep us informed of the recordings as they develop.
Shows that a solo guitar played with that sort of feeling is enough without having to ornament the piece further. Love it! |

Anyhow slight change of plan. I've re-recorded Blind Mary (slower this time) and tagged St. Andrews onto the end of it. They're both in DADGBE and sort of fit together quite nice and it's slow Irish then faster Scottish.
Take a listen to the sample here (again select Quadruped then track 4 - Blind Mary / St. Andrews

Strings - Elixir Nanowebs 80/20 11-52

This is pretty much a raw export of the recorded piece, I've yet to master it properly. Quite frankly I'm sick of this piece and glad it's finally recorded so I never have to play it again; it might not even make the grade for the album.
Once again thanks for listening :) |

Location: UK | Great stuff Dweez - keep it up and look forward to your CD. Believe it or not the OFC website and Dweez's sample tracks have really inspired me to start 'twanging' again after years of my guitars laying dormant. Anyone know where I can get TABS for Passage? Also look forward to listening to The Irish Girl as this is a real blast from the past for me when I had a go at it in the early 90's when I bought Adrian Leggs video. Dweez - where do you place your mics. In the past I used a cheap dynamic mic but bought a C1000s the other week. Can't belive how sensitive it is and i'm wondering if buying another would make a big difference. I've tried using the C1000s with a dynamic but would say the C1000s on it's own records a better sound. Anyone used a Boss Micro Br - are they any good? |

St Andrews feels a bit more rigid than the others. You have a beautiful fluidity in your playing where the notes dance so easily, but in St Andrews it feels more restrained and martialled. It probably has something to do with having to master the track. Hope you don't mind the feedback. Really enjoying listening to the samples. |

Location: Brighty in Blighty | Ian thanks,
I am using two setups, these aren't rigid and I tweak according to guitar/piece etc.
1. Rode NT1a (large diaphram condenser) 8" away pointing at 12th or 14th fret, AKG C1000s (small condenser) 6" away pointing somewhere below the bridge.
2. AKG C1000s 6" away pointing at the 12th fret, 2nd C1000s 6" away pointing at below the bridge, they are 18" apart. Gotta stick to the 1:3 rule right? ;)
The TAB for Passage came from a DADGAD book I have, will dig out the details later. Next up is Harp Strings, then Born In The Sea both on the Seagull Peppino then it'll be The Irish Girl and Vestapol on the Elite 1537.
Pastyp, thanks. St. Andrews is a royal pain in the bum and it's unlikely to actually be included on the album, I just recorded it to get it out of my hair, I never want to play it again. I agree, I cannot help but play it that way and it bugs me. |

| Dweez, great stuff. I am currently in the music writting stage of a band project. We 5 guys are making recordings of a lot of ideas we have and listening to them in the cars and getting our own melodies and ideas about where to take some already interesting pieces and how to add the whole band sound to these ideas.
We have a couple that we have hopes will draw some attention as they have that long lost. Missing Yes album sound others are taking a heavier keyboard approach and have more of a Genesis thing going on.
I can hear some great Bass lines running through a few of those songs you have.
I seriously think your work is "Excellent" it is very pleasing to listen to and I find I am waiting each pause to see where you go with the piece.....brilliant... but as true lover of complexity in music, I would like to suggest If I may??? you find yourself a great bassist and see how you feel about having him work some advanced runs into a couple of your pieces to see what you think. I can hear the runs now and WOW you have some real potential for full band work within those pieces, not all of them I am sure.... If you try it you might like it then you can go ever farther with other insturments and before you know it you have a band of great musicians and original material. This can be a lot of fun. If you don't care about the money then hey, this is perfect....whatever happens happens and you can't lose.
I actually have an acoustic piece that has a similiar sound and make up, its just a nice run of picking and follows a path that winds around and loupes back on itself. I like it fine but I know it can be more....The band is now adding and changing its arrangement into something much bigger. I find I love this process. I am doing the same to the other guys ideas as well. It is easier to write like this, 5 minds are better than one in many cases. You can't believe what things someone else (who is also a musician) can do with a great idea. It's unpredictable and a blast to see what four other guys come up with.... you choose from the pool of ideas and save anything that is not used, as It might fit the next one.
That was long....sorry...Nice work man.

Both regular tuning, captured with my usual setup of a AKG C1000s and Rode NT1a. Remember these are stripped down 44khz, 16 bit MP3s, recording was done at 96khz, 24 bit and these have not yet been mastered. Reverb etc may change...

From your responses in this thread (6 month of track by track coverage) that's all you really want to hear anyway. |

Your website is also very nice. Looking forward to Octopod. Just wondering if you have given any thought to maybe combine Quadrupde and Octopod into a Double Album set? That might be kinda nice. |

I've been anxiously awaiting the arrival of your new album and after listening to it for a week I must say I'm delighted. Quadruped, Snowflight, Natsuhiboshi, Passage, and Last Track are among my current favorites, but honestly I like them all. It's a really nice album; produced very tastefully with a good mix of songs. It would be tough to decide what to put on the "B" side of the first single. ;) I'm looking forward to hearing about your next release.
Well Done!

The next one, Octopod, is well under way. I have 5 tunes ready to record and another 3 almost there. Then there's another 9 to get up to speed.
If you like Quadruped you'll love Octopod, kinda more of the same but more challenging pieces. I've set a December '10 deadline
I'll be posting the TAB for Quadruped on my site in a few days so if you want to learn it... |
