carry on Hows about some additional info on the computer first. It's a 10+ year old machine with an unknown background after all.
What OS are you trying to load?
Newer OS may require more RAM than the machine currently has.
Need info to give intelligent answers.. |

Well, this year... After TWO computers have died on me, I learned to back-up my information.
On Something External... on that other drive don't help when the whole computer croaks.
This computer that I have now has a slot for an HP Pocket Media Drive (320GB)
So now I have Finally learned that when my computer croaks, all my stuff croaks with it.
I guess that this applies to Macs too. |

A G4 is fairly old, and won't run newer operating systems. The previous user may have upgraded the operating system beyond the ability of the computer. Finding an older version of the OS and doing a clean install may produce a better result. |

Sorry, but that 2nd INTERNAL drive works just fine as a back-up source.
I usually use 2 internal drives set into 4 partitions.
Partition 1 houses the OS
Partition 1 (second drive)houses working files
Partition 2 is the back-up to the working files, and
Partition 2 (second drive) houses a clean (unactivated) system folder.
Unless the processor and BOTH hard drives fail at once, the computer can always be up and running in just a couple of minutes. |

Al,
If you need help formatting your hard drive, installing a new OS or whatever, I'd be glad to help.
If you would like me to send you a pre-formatted drive with the OS installed, I'd be glad to do that for you.
If you would like me to send you another G4 Mac already set up in exchange for yours, just ask.
I'm off. |

Location: Alagoas, Brazil | Well, after all those years being a cop, I can offer some valuable experience tips:
1) A lousy guitar player playing a high end guitar sounds lousy anyway;
2) A top guitar player playing their niece“s Barbie Toy guitar sounds awesome;
3) A man who carries a gun and does not know how to properly use it will get in serious trouble, sooner or later.
4) Computers are machines just like guitars or guns.
Just food for thought. And, as far as I know, Al is an awesome guitar player. |

Sorta like when we say that Adamas guitars are bulletproof. I suspect in reality a bullet would have little trouble penetrating a 1687-8.
Would love to see the "Myth Busters" TV show do a Mac/PC thing. |

Location: Cicero, NY | I work with both pc's and macs and what I find truly obnoxious is the Apple arrogance. I recently had to replace a keyboard which was under warranty. Simple one in-one out move. I called the Apple store where we bought the mac and was told that I could not just walk in, I would have to make an "appointment" online. Really? An "appointment"? "Yes, make an appointment and the local store "concierge" will email you confirming your time. Then, you can come in and talk to a Mac GENIUS to replace the keyboard."
So, when I was approved to walk in, I was told that if I needed a keyboard that day, I would have to buy one and then return it when my warranted keyboard came in. I'm thinking "Hmm...they're going to send me a refurbished keyboard and when I bring this one back in after 5 days with nothing wrong with it, they're going to re-package this one up and sell it as refurbished. Why can't I just keep THIS one?" but no go. I'd have to come back in 5 days to get my new refurbished keyboard.
Yeah. Genius. |

I have worked with apples since the IIc and pc's since the 8086's and the ibm 360 is what I learned on.
so I have a bunch of experience with both platforms.
my biggest gripe is that everyone touts mac as the perfect machine. it is not.
I bought what I thought would be a plug and play recording setup and within 3 days the G4 was going squirrely on me.
Believe me I am very analytical and systematic in how I address and solve these sorts of problems.
this problem is beyond my scope of expertise.
I want to thank fletcher for stepping up e mailing me some solutions and offering me a system to replace this non working one. |

When my dad got a mac, he was telling me how great they are and how in 20 minutes you're up and running and on the internet. Well, 2 hours later he was looking for a community college class so he could learn how to use his "intuitive" mac.... |

The woman down the hall from me would often ask me to help her with computer problems.
She recently asked for my help with a Mac laptop that she borrowed from her son.
I could not figure-out how to work the durn thing.
After looking at it for few moments I asked, "This is a Mac, huh?"
At which time I told her that I could do nothing for her.
[After I had finally figured-out how to fix her Vista computer that she had borrowed from her brother] |
