Found this photo of Rick Nielsen on Jol Dantzig's Hamer workshop blog which begs the obvious question . . . can you really break or lose this many picks during a set?

Break a pick? I've dropped a few in my day, most wound up inside the guitar. But never THAT many

Maybe this is just pointing out the obvious.. but they are for tossing out to the audience, sometimes 6 or more per tune. Grab one.. play a little... toss it to the adoring fans...

I used to toss little clip-on Panda's. Free access to the afterhours party to any girl that caught one and showed it to the guy at the door.

Anyone else remember the good'ol days of Rock'N Roll at the Jazz Cellar in Honolulu !!! :)

Miles,
Since I never played where adoring fan (not a typo) would want me to throw picks at 'em, I learned something new today.
Sounds like most of you guys play at (on) a different level than me and when ya'll get into chord progression, theory and all that stuff with amps, I just sit here and go "huh?"
But I learn a hell of a lot. And I'm happy with that.

I think Miles is talking about the biggies like Rick Nielsen. Most of us hold onto our picks. Hey, they cost...

Ahh, Hamer legend Rick Nielsen. Probably the guitarist I most identify with and the reason I picked up an electric in the first place. Allow me to tell you my favorite Rick Nielsen story.......

A couple years back I was privy to some comped front row Cheap Trick tickets at a local casino. We were seated on his side of the stage. It was the 4th or 5th time I had seen them so the wow factor was off but I always enjoy them and will see them again given the chance. But Mr. N was doing his thing, literally tossing handfuls of picks out because that's what he does. Being that close there's schrapnel and one found it's way on the front of the stage floor within reach. So I lean in and snag it. Now during the show I notice him and bassist Tom Petersson checking out a fine young lady on our side. It's subtle but it happens with a certain regularity. Much later on I make eye contact with Mr. N and nod towards the girl. At that point he flips me off about six feet away, and NOT so subtly I might add! I in turn gave him his pick back. He smiled and I was laughing. It was such an odd, but great shared moment that he'll never remember and I'll never forget. A perfectly completed rock & roll circle of events for me and, as dumb as it sounds, getting flipped off by one of my favorite folks was perfect. I love those guys.

Pandas? Clip on Pandas? That'll make the girls squeal with glee ... were they still in grade school? :) Somehow, that just doesn't jive with the leather pants and the ... the ... whatever ...

Thanks for the explaino, Miles. That makes perfect sense. The concerts I attended (and still attend) never included pick shrapnel.

Maybe I'm weird..but I've been using the same pick for nearly ten years now. That may be some sort of record. It's a Dunlop Tortex 1.0 mm.

I know it's from the USA, but do your picks over there come in metric measurements or imperial?

LOL... that was one wierd gig. Lee (in the shorts) was always for trying something different, just for the sake of the fun of it. I always thought it great, cause I never had the nads to pull off half the stuff he did.

That gig actually was a bit of fun. It was a battle of the bands put on by a promotion company. The best band (not us) didn't win (just like us) cause we weren't signed with the company doing the battle. Only those signed placed... and we kinda knew that going in... so we just did what we wanted to do. We weren't supposed to play originals.... and we were supposed to play blues.... so as you can guess... we played mostly originals, and the blues.... were Lee's shorts... in blue. We even had lots of stage presence :) Hard to see in the photo, but boxes wrapped like gifts on stage = stage presents.

Too funny... we had a blast... got paid.. that's all that counts really.

I've had the same picks for 30 years. I don't use any.
Anita, I feel the same way when I join these guys at a gathering, but they're fun to watch.
