I think I’ve finally hit a plateau in my long-range GAS management plan. I reach this conclusion for several reasons. First, I’m out of room. Anything new has to be stored out of sight, or has to replace something that will then get stored out of sight. Therein lies the problem. I like to see my stuff. All of it. Second, there’s no rational need. I already have an absurd amount of stuff. Third, SWMBO has just about had enough. Like doing corners on a motorcycle, you can push into a lean only so hard before the hard parts start scraping off. She isn’t about to say no to me, but the consequences will be predictable and punitive. Fourth, there are many more important and useful things I can and should be doing with my financial resources. Accordingly, my new plan is to stop going after (1) rare or bizarre one-offs, (2) duplicates of models that I already have, (3) fancy limited edition must-haves that from time-to-time show up for sale here or elsewhere, and (4) historically significant items with wonderful tone or impossibly bright illumination. Instead, I’ve decided to limit my interest only in gear that truly serves as an upgrade over what I currently own. To that end, I’ve made a list of items that I consider to be absolutely essential to complete my guitar bandroom. I’ve spent the last month reviewing and editing this list, looking carefully at each specific item, considering cost versus benefit or value, and removing lots of things that no longer measure up to my self-imposed absolutely essential threshold. My new plan is that only if and when something from that specific list becomes available will I consider going after it. I will dutifully ignore anything and everything else that might otherwise appeal to my GAS tendencies. I'm set and ready to implement my new plan. Now, the bad news . . . there’s something like 17 guitars, a half dozen amps, eight pedals or preamps, six neon signs, four banners, and two custom amp cabinets remaining on that list. Now what?

Oh, self-control huh? I used to have that, but I've lost it somewhere along the way...

I built a humididor with capacity for only a fixed number of guitars. I gave away all my excess stands and wall hangers. And I stopped browzing ebay. So far, so good.

That's what you get for doing a list. The solution is simple: buy a bigger house.
I liked the motorcycle analogy, but I was waiting for a list of the stuff you were going to sell because you have duplicates. Some of those cheap Ovation signs would be nice. I think you should keep the extra Fender Acoustisonic, just so you can demonstrate the stereo preamps in Ovations.

Did it ever occur to you and Dave that maybe it was too late for self control?

I'm not trying to control myself. That's SWMBO's job.

Gee, Brad, are you trying to make the rest of us look bad?? :D ;)

My list (and its practical applications):
Ovation sign = one piece oaktag and some Crayolas
Amps = one of those big ear trumpets positioned in front of the one I've got
Pedals = the things that propel you as you ride around the block
Cords = for bundling newspapers
Stomp boxes = those that are ready for recycling

At least there's no HWMBP to limit the acquisitions...

I think it's a great idea! I've got the same concept, but I've added to it: I have to use the gear on a regular basis.

You guys with lists-take your list and give it to Al to put on his computer. It will crash and he'll lose it. I bet he won't charge much for this service.

This makes sense...I'm doing it too. However, all my earlier acquisitions served the extremely valuable purpose of crystallizing the "what-I-REALLY-want" list. Now, I have several extras that I can use to do the "continual upgrade" thing.

There are several more cannons, and Mr. Big is involved. There are some great responses here, much of it resembling a string of GASoholic Anonymous testimonials.

I can't say there is anything "on the list" right now. There are a few new things I'd like to check out when they finally hit the street next year.
