Close 2nd though, the 1271 Viper.
See, if you keep your collection slimmed down to the ones you play a lot, it's easy. |

the best sounding
the most valuable
the one you play the most
the one with sentimental value
the one most difficult to replace
Some contenders ...
1. The OFC Guitar. In addition to being one of the finest guitars they ever built, I know the Blood Sweat (and Tears) that Al put into these OFC guitars and will forever be grateful that he had the stamina to see the project through.
2. Alpep KOA 12-Fret. I had a role in this that only Al is aware of. 'nuf said, but it makes owning s/n 01 all the more special to me.
3. Slothead 47RI #47. The "other" s/n 47. |

And yes, by its very nature the question requires analysis and introspection. Otherwise, an answer would be a knee-jerk response, and therefore probably wrong. This question's been asked before, usually in the "what would you grab in a fire" form. Those with multiple Os and As have them because each brings something unique to the stable. To have to chose one, and only one, requires thought. |

he usd this guitar to help put food on the table when he and my Mom were starting out and when I was a baby.
It is my most prized possession and I can say I'm lucky to have a neat thing or two laying around the house (for instance a sword my Grandfather brought back from Japan that was made between 1320 and 1360).
If the house was going up in smoke, after the wife and kids (crazy-ass dog included) the 68 would be the thing I'd grab. |

It seems to have a kind of "mojo" about it, and the big bottom end is incomparible. So ... I can't really decide between the two. |

No huh? Then it would have to be the beautiful Adamas that Beal sent me. (Or maybe the LX I got from Bob, or the old faithful 1617 that I've had forever, or that sweet little Parlor that I'm fostering for Iffy...) |

Best Sounding? Most Valuable? Most Played? Most Sentimental Value? Most Unique?
The instinctive answer would be the Adamas.
But I play the Elite T's more often than the others...
And I do like the 07 Collectors'...
I'll get back to you after I clean this mess. |

| I unfortunately, no longer actually OWN any guitars, Ovation or other brand, and the two I have are loaners from Iffy and Slydog. all of my gear has been sold to pay the bills and keep us afloat.
If I could only have just one, it would have to be a deep bowl cutaway, kinda like the Black one Fred checked out for me a while back at the pawn shop, but any Made in USA deep bowl would make me happy.
I'll have one to call my own again hopefully sometime soon.
meanwhile the loaners are very nice and extremely appreciated. Thank You Johnny and Al!
Best Regards to all!

Funny thing... when I started to analyze it.. came up with the same answer. If I could only have one guitar, it would be the guitar that was only worth something to me as obviously I would have sold all the others... While I doubt I could get a wooden nickel for my Medallion, it still plays and sounds great, and barring getting run over by a really big truck (remember it's aluminum neck on a deep bowl)... it will likely outlast me. |

But...I got to thinking about why, because the others are in better shape, prettier, sometimes more versatile...so why her?
Because...in most of the years when I was called upon to lead worship, I played her.
Because...when I learned to play bluegrass to make my husband happy, I played her.
Because...when he died, and I'd play for hours on end to work through the grief and purge out the pain, I played her.
Because...when I take her out of the case and cradle her, I can still hear him singing, "I love you just the way you are, I wouldn't change you if I could"--the last song he worked on before the cancer got him.
She's been a part of my life for over 30 years now, in sickness and in health, in life and death, for richer or poorer.
I guess that's reason enough...

-> The OFC Slothead. Definitely.
-> Nope, hang on. The Lennon. This is the epitome of what Ovation is all about.
-> Nay, the 2007BCS. I love that guitar. It is the pinnacle of Ovation engineering.
-> Wait ... the 1537 is killer. Best one I've ever played and the most beautiful to boot.
-> Hold on, I couldn't live without the Custom Legend 12. A top to die for. Sound too. Plus its got the Optima.
-> Uh ... I forgot the electrics. I'm keeping the Deacon Deluxe 12. Too rare, too cool and plays like butter.
-> Make that the mahogany Viper. It is the one guitar that always seems to wind up on my recordings.
-> Oh wait ... the EA-68 Viper. Gotta have that. 16 frets clear is just the bomb. Glen Campbell plays one. So does Dan Shafer.
-> Yipes. That reminds me. I have the EAB-68 Viper bass. In the Cherry Cherry Burst. I love that color. Everyone needs a bass. And the chicks all dig bass players, right? OK, keeper.
-> Hang on. You know, the Josh White may be old and played a lot, but it is all original, in great shape, and it's got mojo oozing out of its mojo. And I can claim I play a manly-necked guitar. If it's provenance I should be looking at, this is the one.
-> Or maybe not. The 1968 shiny Balladeer 12 has the coolest braz winged bridge. And it sounds like a choir of angels. I got to keep that one.
-> You know, the one guitar I said I'd never let go is the 2000 Collectors. My favorite neck ... bar none. And oh so stunningly beautiful. So that's the one I must keep.
-> Well, lemme think about this ... that K-1111 reissue is really opening up for me. There's something very special in that thing ...
-> What am I thinking? The 1311, my very first Ovation, has been my trusty partner for 27 years ... longer than any of them others.
-> OK. So I can let the 1969 1117 with the winged bridge go. No wait. I've got that one strung Nashville and it just sings. Everyone needs a Nashville guitar. Besides, the brochure from that year has Eric Clapton playing this exact guitar.
I've got it. I can sell the 2171 Ultra. It's a great little guitar. Love the asian style sunburst with the bright red layer and the yellow layer. Sounds great with its solid top and contour bowl. The 5 piece neck looks and feels like a USA neck. It's the guitar that gets left out and banged on by anyone who comes around and it holds up no problem. But I could sell that one. If I had to. Was that the original question?
Please don't get started on electrics or wooden ones. |

I paid $250 for it in '83 and it sounds better than $3000 Martins I've played recently.
When I go I'm taking it with me! :) |

I was never a fan of the red of the 47's and I love the blue of my OFC (ding) guitar, but that beige is was just done so RIGHT.
If I could afford to have the factory build me just one guitar, that would probably be the template for it..... |
