Excellent demonstration of the various tonal qualities of wood by Master guitar maker Kim Walker.

Cool Stephen. As a drummer, (er, percussionist) I appreciate that. ;)

Interesting!
I'd like to see the taps outputted to an oscilloscope so you could see the frequency and amplitude of the intitial strike, and then watch the tone decay.
That would put some quantitiative science into it. (and maybe take somne of the fun out of it for the purists, but I'm an engineer, so I apologize.)

Yeah, I was truly amazed at the difference between the woods.

So what would a blank fibronic soundboard tap out like?

That was great, Stephen. I wonder how a sheet of carbon fiber would sound in that demo? I found the rosewood comparisons fascinating.

Good idea...
Thats a cool Link tough somewhat subjective.... (Should ditch the psuedo film scratch special effect, very distracting.)

It would be a better side by side if the blanks were prepped to be the same size. It is also important to hold the blank at a natural frequency node or else it could be damped

I'd like to see a sheet of hand-laid and resin injected Lyrachord as well. The Adamas top would be interesting in the mix as mentioned earlier. As far as the top woods..tapping on them in that state is like doing it w/o strings attached. I wonder how much they differ under simulated string tension or simply w/ braces attached??

Since tapping the blanks is used as one way to screen out perceived better from worse (or ones with cracks) in order to yeild a better sounding guitar... I wonder how directly related the prediction is when top to top variation could be very subtle.?

I have a blank unbraced Adamas I top no eppi's and also an older Applause plywood top w/o the hole cut out and no braces.
I just tapped both of those and finding the best place to hold them was somewhat trickly.
The Applause top was dead in relation to the ADI top, but sustained longer than I suspected. The AD I top is so thin it just keep visibly vibrating and sustained much longer. The AD I had a lower frequency greater amplitude wave in it. .. Talbot

A great demonstration of the difference between tonewoods.

It makes one wonder whether Ovation's claim that the material from which the body of a guitar is made from has almost no impact on its sound, as long as it is sufficiently rigid.

Sorry. Let me rephrase what I wrote:

It raises the question of whether Ovation could have produced an even better sounding guitar had they fashioned their guitar bodies (bowls) out of wood instead of Lyrachord.
