Just wondering if anyone here at the OFC uses percussive taps in their playing, like Peppino or Kaki (and countless others).
Here's an interesting thing, I've always liked the technique but found it hard to copy other people that do it. But today made a real breakthrough by just letting myself go and trying to play and 'tap'. I've found that having a ring on the left hand combined with the Ovation bowl provides a great rim shot sound, a bass/snare type sound is easily produced by various hand thumps/taps on the sound board.
For me this opens up a MASSIVE realm of possibilities and ways to compose.
I urge you to try it.
Hmm, that Seagull Peppino is calling me. It's quite fitting, I live by the sea and love peppers, OK it's a bit tenuous but one ought to look out for these tiny 'signs' and act upon them right? :rolleyes:
[A small aside, played some tunes on my 07C to some friends the other day (who knew nothing about Ovations at all) and all of them said WOW that looks and sounds amazing, what is it?). So some more O believers are born :) ] |

Location: Utah | My daughter does it a lot. She either taps with a fingernail or uses the palm of her hand, both techniques onto the bridge or saddle. Plugged in and turned up through a PA, it really sounds great. She does this as an accent effect.
She also does a technique of strumming all her fingers going from a fist to wide open and then hits all the strings with her palm to mute it. It really adds a percussiveness when plugged in. You'd swear there was a drum keeping the beat through the song. |

Location: Utah | Alan, the best I can offer is Sara's Myspace at http://www.myspace.com/sarajaneymusic . I sure wish she'd put up her better recordings but she's too busy with boyfriends and social activities this summer.
Colors uses the finger sweep and palm strike to the strings. This is a mic recording so you don't get the good percussion.
On Strings she does the palm strike to the bridge. |

Location: Brighty in Blighty | Thats great (actually LOVELY singing) but it's not the percussive thang I'm talking about. That's just normal right hand rhythm stuff.
What I'm talking about is thumping/tapping/slapping/clipping/hitting the body AWAY from the strings. |

Location: Scotland | I've booked a bunch of those guys at my club lately. The audiences tend to like 'em. I'll be more impressed when they stop hitting the fuckin' thing and think about actually writing a decent song. There's a ton of them and most of them are one-trick-ponies who would be better served by employing a percussionist so they could concentrate on playing the guitar. Location: Alagoas, Brazil | I think that when we made the transition from acoustic to solid electric guitars, the natural percussiveness was lost, then guitar players stopped thinking about that.
Coming back, this time to electric acoustic, we start to find these lost things.
But I would like to point that old flamenco guitars had a "pick-guard" which, instead of protecting the guitar from picks, was supposed to protect it from the agressive tapping flamenco players used. Some danzas were played only on the guitar, so the player had to use it percussively to provide the rithym to the dancer. |
