Which would you buy (for the same price)
a new adamas 2080 or a new 2009 collector
and why.

I recently sold my martin d42, paid off some debt, and want to get a high end ovaton (new)

I presently have the following ovations
a balladeer 1111 reissue
a mid depth balladeer (cedar top)electric
a mid depth 12 string balladeer electric

you can get a whole lot more value for an ovation at this time (NEW)

although I have not posted much, I read all the threads, then GAS sets in.

As a 3rd choice (actually it would be my 1st choice) I would also consider one of the 1681 ReIssues that Al has. Fantastic guitars for an almost give away price.

Since I am a real Adamas fan vs the woodtop Ovations my 2nd choice would be the 2080.

Just so you know that I practice what I preach I have two of the 1681 reissues (1 red 1 blue) and 2 of the 2080's (although mine were custom built long neck baritone 6 and 12 string).

I would steer clean of an Ovation wooden top. Compared to your D42 you will be quite disappointed

THanks stephent28

So Al has some leftover NOS 1681's

Don't laugh, but how do I get ahold of AL

Al, if you are out there, I am partial to blue.

Did't know I could still find a new one. These are the non cutaway deep bowl. Do they have a pickup in them or are they strictly acoustic.

Sounds like you have a pretty good collection of the Adamas. One vote for the adamas.

FYI, I ended up putting in an offer which was accepted over the weekend on ebay for the 2009 collector. On Monday, they cancelled my offer saying they were out of stock. This locked up my funds for 3 days (urgh). I called the store saying I wanted one (not mentioning price and they said they could get them). Never called me back once I told them what they had done. Anyway.
just thought I would share.

Uh, Stephen, don't you mean 1687? Those are GREAT guitars. Welcome, rhoadsscholar. You can get Al's phone number off his website . Call him, you won't be disappointed.

The original question is a tough one. I just got a 2080 and love it. But the wood on the '09C is so much prettier and sexier than the black top of the Adamas. People say the '09C sounds great.

Since you already have several round hole wood topped Ovations, I'd say go for something different, but not because the '09C is deficient in any way.

Al has all kinds of great deals available right now. Heck, get both the Adamas and the '09.

Another option: get one of the remaining OFC II guitars from Al...these are KILLER! and reasonably priced as well...call Al...he never closes... ;)

Comes with the OP Pro (but the iDea fits nicely as seen in TnT's above)...

Tim blew some minds at the SSSJ with that iDea setup. What a fantastic innovation! That was one of the many highlights for me.

With the dollars equal, I'd go for the 2080 or some other Adamas.
You already have some nice wood tops... it's time to diversify.

As a recent purchaser (this week from Al)of the '09 Collectors and owner of a couple of Adamas textured tops, I can say that is a difficult decision. BUT ... I'd opt with the 09 Collectors. My Adamas guitars sound louder to me (or the player) because of the hole configuration, which also holds true to the Elites, but if you're standing in front of one, the round holes seem to project just as well. After playing the 09 however, I've found it have an incredible tonal quality and range, the setup is perfect, the appearance is fantastic. It has the Op Pro Studio and contour bowl. The final deciding factor for me was the limited run on them and the major price drop. I believe I can always pickup another Adamas (which I really do like also)but I have an idea people who get these 09s in their hands will be hanging on to them for a long time. If you already have a lot of round holes, you could always get the 09 and compare it with the others, then down the road you could part with one of those to finance an Adamas purchase. Also ... If you already made the decision once to push the button on an 09, you KNOW YOU WANT ONE. (:

If you go for another 09, go through Al and you won't have the same problem

If those are the exact parameters of the choice: The 2080. (My bona fides: I have three of them; my disclaimer: I've never played an '09 Collectors)

2080: TOTAL versatility, plays beautifully no matter the style of play or the volume, or plugged in or not. Feels great in the hands. Some LOVE the looks. I'm up in the air about that, but that's very secondary for me. For sound, tone, balance, dynamics? WONDERFUL!

And, nearly perfectly non-neurotic. Stays in tune FOREVER! That is a good and bad thing. You can play for a long time and if you are not paying attention (as in you go into a slightly hypnotic state as I sometimes do), you can start to get ever so slightly out of tune and not realize it.

Again, don't ignore the disclaimer, above.

Also, some VERY good points!

Might want to flip a coin.

I am in west bloomfield... Believe it or not, ended up hear after being a native Californian. Lots of great comments. I have a call into Al.

I'll be pulling the trigger today. I do appreciate all the help. I could dump some more stuff and get one of each down the road. It sounds like I narrowed my choices down to some pretty good ones. I am also going to see what Al might have. Like the OFC Adamas in the picture too.

If I'm not mistaken, you have the ONLY 2080 12-string in existence? I remember having drooled over that one on e-Bay for a LONG time before you snapped it up! That just has to be a GREAT guitar! How's it treating you?

I have one of the OFC II's -- All that the 2080 is and more. I think there aren't any left, however. If there are, you won't go wrong with that one.

bvince. I sure love your collection. I come out your way in the winter. took up skiing last year at 48. Love it (but not very good). Spoke with Al. Good guy. Getting both sounds like an interesting option though. I love the feedback this forum provides (and love the non-feedback my ovations provide), bad pun but couldn't resist.

No, that one actually belonged to Fugot (Mike C) and as far as I know is the only regular 2080 12 string. Not sure who bought it but I think it was somebody here on the forum.

Mine is a 2080D LONG NECK 12 string (with a matching 6 string mate) that I had custom made and it is a different beast all together. Been mine since day one and is currently on the "will not ever part with it" side of the room.

I believe Al is referring to the 2008 Adamas collectors guitar (slotted headstock with modern features).

I had a good conversation going through the KOA and the Adamas guitars.
As some have said, narrow it down to two and get both.

I also understand the features Al put into the OFC 2080 (all nice touches), but it is a little more than I want to spend.

Man, I really appreciate ALL the comments on this board. It is kinda fun to hear what/why others prefer certain models. Now seems the time to buy as there is some uncertainty what Fender will do and the prices are really great. I am seriously of thinking of selling more stuff to be able to get both.

I might be able to get the KOA or one of the ADAMAS export only models Al sells (partial to the non-cutaway with electronics). Quite a different beast than the 2080, but there is a part of me that likes the original Adamas look.

From looking at BVINCE's handle and his recent aquisition of a 2009 collector, He seems like one who has/can compare the two.

I think BVINCE read my mind when he posted this.

As a recent purchaser (this week from Al)of the '09 Collectors and owner of a couple of Adamas textured tops, I can say that is a difficult decision. BUT ... I'd opt with the 09 Collectors. I guess I have just moved into the camp that says if you want a woodtop guitar go all wood and if you want the incredible unique tone of an Adamas get one of those also.

The woodtops will always be around (IMHO) partly because of their much lower price point. New Adamas (and consequently NOS/Used) will be much harder to come by in the future based on whatever Fender may decide to do.

+1 on the 2008 collectors. I've had mine for a year now and still love it to bits. If Al has still got one, snap it up. I don't think too many people will be selling theirs. Mine's not going anywhere.

Mine either. They're stunning all the way around - volume, tone and looks.

And even 'tho I think numerology is a load of crap, it's #21 of the 08 Collector series, my birthday is Aug 21, and dear sweet SWMBO bought it as my birthday present last year.

Hey Slipkid, Fraser is close by. My Band Rhoadside plays out in Warren, Fraser, Clinton Township, New Baltimore. Our next gig is the night before Thanksgiving (nobody should be working the next day)... We are just getting going on Version 3.0 of the band. Mostly 70's and 80's rock... Sounds like it could be fun. I should have a new toy by then...

Still pondering what else to sell on ebay to get both.

I am beginning to think that what boards like the ovation fan club are for. To encourage GAS and stimulate the economy ...

Thanks for everyone's comments and suggestions.

I think bvince read my mind and I am going with his suggestion.

Buy a 2009 before they are all gone. Play the 2009 and decide which of my present ovations I might want to get rid of to fund an Adamas purchase.

I took the plunge, and own #115 out of #150 of the 2009 ovation collector guitar. I had pm'd a dealer on ebay who had one and got their last one. I shared my ebay story from a different dealer and they gave me a good price.

I have always wanted a custom legend and this is the first time I ever tried out the Contour bowl. I love it.

I had a couple of conversations with Al and need to decide which Adamas model to get before they are all snapped up. I still like to 2080 and the OFC model Al spoke about. I will be moving some equipment and looking up Al soon once I make up my mind. Thanks everyone for participating in this thread. I guess I needed both the 2009 and the Adamas. Since bvince has both and recently posted the 2009, I will be playing the 2009 this weekend and figuring out what to sell to fund the Adamas.

One down, one to go.

Roady... Maybe you'll get a chance to play some of mine to really get you confused.
When I joined this place I had two. I still have those two and five more. Six more if you count the ukelele.
You have been warned.
