All for you, AlanM.

WARNING: Long, and slighty purple, prose.

It was a lazy, drizzly Saturday afternoon when I first saw her, the kind of late-Autumn day most people avoid by curling up with a good book by the fire. Low, pregnant clouds sending just enough mist to make you look stupid carrying an open umbrella, but enough to make you miserably damp without. The trees had already lost their red, orange and yellow bursts, and now waited bare, shorn of their last richness as they prepared for the coming bitter cold.

I walked the lonely streets, the few people out and about ignoring me, intent on their errands, heads bowed and faces obscured by their brightly colored rain gear, as though shaking a fist of defiance at the grayness, eager to finish whatever business forced them out of their comfort on such a miserable day. I was fidgety, unsatisfied by a gnawing hunger, not of the belly but of the mind. I couldn’t quite hold onto whatever it was that was tickling my desire, but like an itch under a cast I couldn’t quite reach it to satisfy the restlessness.

In my aimless wandering I turned down an unfamiliar street. Before I’d gone 20 steps I saw her: standing in the window of a shop I didn’t know existed, even though I’d lived in this old section of the city for the better part of a decade, her glow cut through the gloom like a beacon. And as the familiar lighthouse marking the inlet home brings a sense of reprieve to a sailor on storm-tossed seas, I knew: This was it! This is what I’d been itching for! This was the release from my dark musings!

The door to my salvation beckoned. I approached the ornate carvings in the rich wood and gently tugged on the handle. The squeak of the rusty hinges snapped my reverie for a moment, but once inside (and allowing a moment for my eyes to adjust to the even greater dimness) I regained my eager anticipation. A faint aroma impressed itself on my nose, a complex and not unpleasant mix of old wood and mustiness, of long-ago fires in the fireplace, of brusque men smoking their cigars and arguing politics, of perfumed ladies in their jewelry and petticoats – how much this space must have seen and heard in all its incarnations over the past century-and-a-half!

Now, in its declining years, a grey, wizened gnome of a man presided over this space, looking almost as forlorn as his surroundings. Hunched with arthritis and the other plagues of age, he greeted me with his rheumy eyes. The dusty shelves and display cases, some with cracks running crazily at angles across the glass, were mostly empty. The old man, in a voice abused by decades of cigarettes, a voice most at home on the Mississippi delta backing the plaintive wail of a sharecropper’s blues slide, told me how his late brother had owned this music store. It had been a magical place, he told me. Musicians from far and wide would gather here on weekends and tell tales of the road, drink heartily and make merry, all the while playing the most wonderful music. Now, as the last member of his family left, he was just waiting to sell the few remaining items before closing the door forever, before this entire building was razed to make way for some redevelopment scheme cooked up by out-of-town developers and the local crooked politicos.

Finally, I strode to the window to get my first close look at her. I couldn’t believe what I saw: a 1939 Martin D28 in all her faded glory! She was scarred and road-worn; some might say, “rode hard and put up wet,” but to me she was the most beautiful, perfect creature I’d ever beheld. I didn’t dare pick her up yet, even though my head was swimming with the music we would make. I wanted to wait for that first magical touch so we wouldn’t be interrupted. I asked the gnome to pack her in a case for me, gave the man everything I had, even though it meant eating mac-and-cheese from a box for the next month, wished him well and rushed home.

As I carried her still in her case over the threshold of my apartment, I could almost feel her twitching inside, eager for release. She must have sensed, as did I, that we were meant for one another. All of those lonely years finally culminating in treasure found. I’d never been sentimental, never believed in all of that “love at first sight” twaddle until now. Now I knew, now I understood. Alas for the myriad of humanity too poor to ever feel this certainty! I laid her down gently on the only furniture in my studio apartment, my bed, and opened the case. There she was, resplendent in repose! “One more moment, my darling,” I cooed, “then we’ll be together.”

I rummaged through the drawers of my sparse kitchen until I found what I needed: 2 scented candles left behind by one of my many previous failed relationships. Fortunately, seeing them didn’t jog any memory of who might have left them there. I placed the lit candles on either side of the bed – no bare bulb hanging from the ceiling fan like a condemned man from a red and black noose! The mood had to be perfect. Finally I was ready.

Gently, lovingly, I placed my large, rough, workingman’s hand under her smooth neck and lifted her softly onto my lap, her hard round bottom resting on my thigh. For a while I just gazed at her, wanting to know every inch, mapping every blemish and scar, searing her unique individuality into my brain. As eager as we both were I wanted this moment to last – there is ever only one first time.

I ran my thumb along the back of her neck, feeling the impressions she’d gathered in a long and fruitful life giving pleasure to many. I wrapped my fingers around and caressed the strings, making the D chord that instantly lets one know how any guitar will respond. I kept my hand in that position and stoked up and down the neck a few times. I could tell she liked it by the soft squeals she let out. Finally, I was ready. With my right hand I caressed the strings just above her hole and strummed. What started with a throaty bass moan continued up until it reached the sweetest soprano cry, a sound so beautiful, so intricate, so full of mystery and longing and fulfillment that the greatest songbird would be green with envy!

I played her, oh did I play her!, slowly at first, starting with a few scales and arpeggios just to warm her up, and then building little by little. It was wonderful, incongruous, both unexpected and expected at the same time, nothing and everything in my experience prepared me for how good we were together. I tried everything I knew, and she responded lustily and with abandon. Reaching unimaginable crescendos, and then falling back to a slow and soft tempo, time and again, we were inseparable for hours. I was like a man possessed, a man who’d sold his soul to Beelzebub himself on some dusty southern crossroad, able to do things I’d never so much as contemplated. No matter the genre, no matter the style, we could do it all! Finally, when we could stand it no more, after what seemed both an eternity of bliss and a fleeting moment of longing, we were spent.

After a few moments of delicious exhaustion I slid over, grabbed a cigarette from my nightstand, and kicked her arse out the door for the dirty slut she is.

Reads like a National Lampoon parody.
It's got a "Bored Of The Rings" feel.

No heart, all intellect.
But pretty good typing none the less.

Hey, it looks almost but not quite unlike Dashiell Hammet.

Lollllllllll! Ok, ok, ok...That's some MIGHTY steamy tripe, Suspects.!

And, as promised, I acknowledge that you CAN put two coherent sentences together. You don't write as well as I do when I'm trying, but you plainly can write. It takes a fine writer to be able to write bad prose well, and that's some of the finest bad prose I've ever read. Right down to the great awful twist at the end.

My story has the advantage of being true. And of not exaggerating.

So, now, I have to ask: When, it's obvious that you CAN write, what's the point of the other inane posts?

You're someone who likes directness. You've got too much imagery and not enough content. This is about 90% description vs. 10% substance. It should be the other way around. Your story is ok, but it's too flowery.

TUS(h), way back when, I used to read a detective magazine called "Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine." (That may not be the exact title; at least the "Ellery Queen" part is correct.) Every now and then you'd get a very well-known author contributing, but, for the most part, the writers read pretty much like a "B" movie screens. I was too young to realize the difference, then, but...your contribution at the beginning of this post reminds me why I eventually stopped buying it.

As for "Point, set, match," as far as I last knew, I belonged to a club made up of people who enjoyed playing the same brand of guitars for pretty much the same reasons. Others have elucidated the things that tend to divide us much more eloquently than I ever could; so, I think I'll just go commune with my guitars now.......

Game, Set and Match, a good trilogy by Len Deighton.
Hook, Line and Sinker was the follow on trilogy.

We all pretty much joined here for the same reasons, guitars, mostly Ovations.

I didn't find it interesting enough to read and, as a civil barrister, I get to read some pretty boring stuff. Send me $500.00 on retainer and I'll read it.

Yeah, I was going to say "civil barrister or uncivil barrister depending who you talk to" but it would have went over .1 of an hour on the docket..lol

NB - it means that you practice civil litigation as opposed to criminal law or whatever.

I tried writing about ten years ago. I knew the odds were long with respect to getting published but figured, why not?

So I came up with a mystery/paranormal story about a detective who solves cases via out of body experiences, outlined it and sat down to write.

Problem is, when you write, you're God. The universe your characters inhabit is one of your making, its physical laws operate at your whim and the people have histories you give them. It's a big responsibility, and a lot of damn work. This is before you even consider style, pacing and overall feel of the work.

After about five chapters I decided I'd rather spend my time reading good writing than contributing more bad, and shut it down.

If Usual Suspects did, in fact write the piece in the first post, I'd say it's pretty damn good, and just a glimpse of what he can actually do.

I wondered a bit about that -- whether Usual actually wrote the thing. After all, only the last paragraph really resembles anything he's ever contributed before -- but I figured I'd take the high road and give him the benefit of the doubt.

Typical critics, can't do it themselves but feel free to question the ability of those who can. I threw that together yesterday morning on my coffee break.

Nice to see a few literate folks amongst the rest of the Neandertals here. The style was a deliberate mash-up of Hammett, Bulwer-Lytton, Bronte, and a dash of Roald Dahl for spice (the stuff he wrote for adults, not his kiddie dreck - look up "Switch Bitch").

I may just flesh that story out a bit and send it to The New Yorker - that's a magazine where the pictures-to-words ratio is the opposite of People, one with which you folks are more intimately familiar. If accepted it'd be my fourth fiction published by them.

I would give him the benefit of the doubt....you never know about people. I myself have a degree from a fine college of journalism, my specialty being feature stories. I suppose if I WANTED to, I could probably come up with some reasonable prose to entertain some of you. But I prefer my usual mindless drivel....it's much easier.

I enjoy the turn of a good phrase as much as a good chord progression.
I have "The Lord of the Rings", on CD... unabridged. All 58 hours of it. I probably go through it twice a year. It's read by a very proper Englishman who really knows how r-r-r-oll his Rs when needed.

But you still haven't answered the question. You obviously have some functioning gray matter, but your other posts are typically pointless and moronic. Why the disguise? I mean, this is a guitar form, fer cryin' out loud! I don't think "producing great literature" appears anywhere in the forum charter.

So, again, why all the OTHER moronic posts?

Of course. Everyone is a critic - of literature, of film, of food, of architecture, of music - by what we choose to buy and what we choose to ignore.

Post some of your guitar playing.

I think we all have that "crazy uncle" that you worry about come time for the Thanksgiving dinner gathering. But when it's all said and done, I think we'd say that life is more interesting with ol' Uncle George than it would be without him.

We are fortunate enough here to have a couple crazy uncles.
Personally, I'm grateful.

Nicely said, Slip!

I DO admit, however, to some frustration, in that TUS plainly COULD contribute something substantive. I risk committing some gratuitous flattery for TUS here, but it seems a bit like having Tiger Woods show up to your amateur golf tournament and just toss insults at the participants. Yeah, he showed up, but so what? No one was the better for it -- including Tiger.

Not exactly. If Tiger were to show up at your softball game and shout insults because he's a good golfer, that would be closer. I still invite TUS to post his guitar playing.

Why? If he's great I can enjoy the playing of a new guitarist. If he sucks, I can still enjoy his writing in the New Yorker. (Ever hear Stephen King play guitar?)

Much more accurate analogy. Thanks for the clarification.

BT said it well above also. As fun as the story was to read, after having read it, none of us was the better, or more knowledgeable, or informed, or a better guitarist, or had any tips or tricks for guitar playing.

The ONE teeny, tiny hint of a link to the ACTUAL point of this forum is a conclusion that the Martin D28 might be a nice guitar.

Be careful what you ask for..this forum may end up being just a bunch of "crazy uncles", throwing insults at every post or at best inane, worthless comments, running off NEW members before they catch the "flavor" here, etc.

I know that I am just a "dumbass from the South" that may not be privy to "the uncles" true identity. I would like to think that it's not one of the many members here that I have met personally, but at last, I have my doubts. If you want the forum to be less than it is, because of this BS, than I would highly encourage your uncles.

Seems to me that there was a fight for unity a short while ago. It divided in the beginning, but in the end, taught quite a few members a valuable lesson, that we are stronger as ONE group UNITED. It was an excellent lesson for a lot us.

I believe that it's time to lockup or kill off "the uncles" before we all become "uncles".

IMO, it would be a tragedy.

Perhaps he already has.... already does... and will continue to so.
Or, perhaps he is just another funny name on a long list trolls we have seen here over the many, many years.

Personally,I don't know who these guys are. Just when I think I got it figured out, I find that I don't.

Man, I need to check the board more often. At the risk of feeding this troll with another comment, like I said in another post you guys are just giving this attention whore exactly what he wants. He's just trying to stir up trouble, and everybody's acting just like that slug Caravan said - like shooting fish in a barrel. Ignore 'em and they'll go someplace else. This now condenses down to one thing for me: those who participate ought to TRY to contribute substantively on at least a somewhat regular basis.

Yes, absolutely, the occasional barb or put down or inside joke to spice it up; but if that's ALL the member does, then he ought to go away. This forum DOES have a point. To paraphrase: It's about Ovation guitars and music.

Personally, I have learned a lot from those more knowledgeable than I, and I VERY much appreciate that. I hope that I have contributed some thought-provoking or informative posts in return. I have tried to.

At this point, I simply don't know the people on this forum well enough to toss barbs, so I don't. In this sense, I know my place. I gather that most of the people in this thread don't know who TUS actually is. I know I don't. If the barbs he tosses are inside jokes, then they fall flat for the vast majority of us.

There ARE some people who can, and even should toss such barbs...to keep those who take themselves too seriously honest. We all know who they are...and they ALSO contribute loads of insightful, incisive, informative stuff. How much poorer would this forum be without Beal, Iffy, Patch, Gallerinski, and many more?

Beggin's point is well-made: if someone's ONLY contributions are negative, or pointless, or gratuitously insulting, then get rid of 'em.
There IS a place for such postings, but it's not here. It's a bit like signing up for a course in geography and finding out that Don Rickles takes up considerable time each class telling you how to do put-downs. Maybe you DO want to learn that, but just not while you're trying to learn geography.

TUS: post some music, talk about guitars, ask some questions, review a guitar or two...do SOMETHING that furthers the mission of this forum.

I come to this forum for one thing only - entertainment.

The very first thing I look for are posts by caravan or Suspect because they are witty as hell and you never know what's coming next. If you think the posts are irreverent, crude and hurtful you ought to be on the email strings with these folks. It'll put you in absolute stitches. There are a few others that can throw a good barb as well.

Before we want to get all hoity toity about what constitutes a positive contribution to this forum it might be nice to step back and think about why the very best of the best members we've ever had have chosen to no longer participate. Shame on us.

Dave: good points. Underscores the fact that we all come here for different reasons. Some of them mutually exclusive. Of course, by definition, not everyone can be pleased by everything. Learning vs. entertainment. Passing along information vs. tossing pointed barbs. Storytelling vs. thread-derailing. All these are contradictory goals, but all appear to be goals of regular participants here.

However, I DO have a few posts in, and I think I have discerned fairly well the tenor of this forum. Frankly, while I was not offended by anything US said, the hijacking of a thread for no good reason is just plain shabby.

I don't think it's all hoity-toity to ask participants to contribute at least SOMETHING to the core mission of this forum at least once in a while. For example: if Beal had said ALL the same things as Suspects, I'd have laughed as hard as anyone, because he already has, oh, a few THOUSAND substantive, informative, useful posts under his belt. TUS? Not so much.

So in essence, what we have is a continuation of this Old Guard/New Guard dispute. I believe these people are the same ones who castigated many of us for not warming up to the ning site when it was first introduced. I believe these are the same people who complained that some of us were stuck in the past. In reality, these are the people who are stuck in the past and cannot accept that everything changes, sometimes new neighbors move in, and we either learn to get along with them or we start a neighborhood war. And I do think it's sad when certain members are criticized for posting what some consider to be irrelevant, non-guitar related "drivel", and yet if it is one of them, anything goes. If these people were run-of-the-mill trolls, it would be no big deal, but it is obvious that these people have been around for a long time, and their greatest desire is to drive away some of us newer members. Won't work. I am here to stay.

Live with it.

I don't think there is any Old Guard / New Guard issue and nobody is trying to drive anyone else way. At least I'm not. New Guard will someday be the Old Guard and there will be a new New Guard and then it'll all make sense. In the mean time I just read on looking for some good laughs from like mind folks. It's still enjoyable, just don't make me read or comment about guitars.

Yessir. Woody's good at hitting nails directly on the head.
Like Dave, I come here for entertainment. If I happen to pick up some interesting trivia about Ovations, all the better.

But about the Old Guard/New Guard thing... some of us have been here for years and have discussed just about everything Ovation/guitar related that there is to discuss. We're usually happy to share our knowledge, but sometimes the same old questions get tiresome, especially when the newbee could have done a simple search and found 300 posts chock full of information on the subject. Try 'best strings' for instance.

Frankly, I think most of the more impudent posts are simply out of boredom (I know mine are). Think of us as perennial college seniors. We've seen it all, heard it all, discussed it all, and now we're just here for the frat parties.
Oh, and you freshmen are just stuck with us, so be careful or you'll wind up on double-secret probation.

OK, fair enough. So for your continued entertainment, a new glove has been thrown and the challenge has apparently not yet been accepted, to wit, that TUS provide us with a sample of his playing. It seems he's more suited to sitting in the back of the class throwing spit balls than stepping to the front and presenting.

Four possibilities:

He'll present a clip of himself (or someone he'll claim is him) actually playing,

He'll lay low for a while then start posting again completely ignoring the challenge,

He'll re-register under a new name and continue posting, or

We'll never hear from him again.

One of the problems I have noticed with searches is that often, people will post a link and label it "here". So the site you are looking for doesn't show up in a search. If I took the same attitude with my students they would never learn anything. Just because I know something, I would never look down on anyone for asking. I would never tell them to look it up. I would try to remember that there was a time when I DIDN'T know, and someone had the patience to teach me. (OK, maybe the strings thing is old, and you CAN find a lot of info by doing a search.) I would think that if you're tired of talking about the same old things, you would either skip over those topics, or just decide not to contribute to that thread. There is no good reason to get snotty and scare away newbies who came here to partake of our knowledge and experience. There is a lot to be said for common courtesy and manners.

Well.............................

Suspects said it was thrown together on a coffee break, I assume from work. I knew that, anyone who can take the time to write all that obviously is at work and not home.

I'm with Dave, we joined here because of guitars, but I come here now for the entertainment as well and to see what my buddies are doing. If there's an interesting historical question I can answer or something technical I might remember I'll answer but much of the "What's the value of my guitar?" "What strings are best?" is a little old.

I love the way threads get twisted around here, that can be interesting. And they usually come back on topic as well. The responces we get from these multiple-personality disoreded people can be funny. Sometimes it's the slap in the face you deserve for saying something dumb, sometimes it's completely out of the park and uncalled for. Keeps things interesting. If they get too far out Mr Big always steps in with Vacation time.

Carry on now................

Well said Bill.

I used to feel obliged to answer a newbies question in complete, readable sentences. Now.. not so much. Not that I don't care but I find if I just let it go for a few minutes, someone else will step in.
Frankly, I think I've somewhat earned the option of choosing not to rush to be the first to post.

And for all the crap he takes, I notice that Dave (Gallerinski for some of you), will still at times jump in with assistance.
Now perhaps to those new to board (under 3000 posts) his answers might seem rather contrite and perhaps even rude. But this is not the case. Dave's remarks are the result of years and years of countless editing and refinement. He has his points boiled down to such a concentrate that at times, to the freshman, it might be to strong to swallow.

And I realize that the search function is not always what it's cracked up to be.

I'm sorry but this is driving me crazy and I can't let it go.
A few posts back, in haste, I used the word "contrite" to describe Dave. That was not the word I was looking for.

con·trite
Pronunciation: \ˈkän-ˌtrīt, kən-ˈFunction: adjective
: feeling or showing sorrow and remorse for a sin or shortcoming

Dave is not conrite.... ever.

2) He'll lay low for a while then start posting again completely ignoring the challenge,

3) He'll re-register under a new name and continue posting, or

4) We'll never hear from him again.
I say, "Fair enough" also. The other piece to this is that -- in my opinion -- anything short of AT LEAST option #1, above, is sufficient to conclude that Suspects didn't write the piece that sparked this long back-and-forth, and he's just an inanity-lobbing fraud.

Post the music, Suspects.

Well, I still consider myself a noobe. I remember coming here when I had a Celeb, and asking a ton of stupid questions, (because I was stupid), and most of the "old guard" answered them in a concise and complete manner. Some like, what is nut width, what's the difference between a saddle and a bridge, etc... Since then, I have owned quite a few Ovations, Adamas, and other brands, and have gained quite an education about guitar design and function.

I appreciate all the information I have gotten from this site and the people who frequent it. THAT'S why I come here. I have come to meet a lot of the members in person, talk to considerably more on the phone who I have never met, and consider all of them very good friends. The dry humor is just topping on the ice cream, and is much appreciated also.

BUT, I feel we all have a responsibility to help out the new members that don't know some of the things we now consider obvious, and answer, just one more time, all the questions that seem to aggravate some of the older members. I'll continue to help out where I can, and would ask some of the more knowledgeable members to correct me when I'm wrong.

I do miss Cliff though. ;)

Dave is not conrite.... ever.
We ALL knew you had mis-typed, Brad. It wasn't a problem. However, I'm not quite sure what word you WERE trying for.

Oh yeah, it's evident enough...Uncles? give me a break..and for all the bravado and prose, in the end it's all just BS and drivel from children pretending to be adults...and doing a poor job IMHO...sorry, but I have better things to do...this is ridiculous...

I am so done with this. I don't feel I need at some point to have to post up my playing to some self-appointed panel of judges in order to have approval to continue to post here. Y'all would hate it anyway and I already know that I suck. But I don't really care because I don't play for some kind of public adoration or some panel's approval that I am fit to breathe the same oxygen as the cognoscenti. I am a rebel and revolutionary at heart and it all just rubs me the wrong way.

Besides, I used to come here to escape this silly world of bigotry wrapped up in a cloak of political correctness, spewed out by some self-appointed panel of thought czardom. But somehow it wound up here. This used to be a fun place where all those crazy wrong-thinking Ovation players would show up and and prove that Ovation was the brand for "different" people. Now we all gotta know the chords and words to Kumbaya, have a daily round of group hugs, and give affirmations of wonderfulness to everyone like some Dale fucking Carnegie seminar. Most of all, we must act in a way so that People Like Us!

I'll be over at the Delta House if anyone asks for me. But if you know how to play and sing "I Gave My Love a Cherry" (or anything allegoristic) I wouldn't recommend coming over. !!Viva la Resistance!!

Alison, you can "believe" whatever the hell you like, but until you back it up with evidence it's just a belief. Kinda like Islam or Christianity or all the other ridiculous beliefs out there that have nothing to do with reality. So please, don't spout what you "believe" without backing it up, otherwise some may quite reasonably start to question your credibility

I never claimed it to be MORE than my belief. I'm entitled to have my own beliefs, am I not? For example, YOU "Spout" that religion is "ridiculous" and that is your right. If you can post YOUR beliefs, why can't I post mine? You can question my credibilty all you want. I know who I am.

Here's the real post:

Lol!

Caravan and TUS are just idiots.

Here's the deal:
1) Introduce yourself -- Why are you here?
2) Contribute a bit...until you have been here for a LONG time (this is a "mature" forum -- in computer terms).
3) Bring some REAL value to the proceedings... this is a lesson for life. As someone said: we "newbies" come here to learn something at your feet. Do you REALLY want to send us away just 'cause you're bored, or burned out, or tired, or all talked out?
4) Do as others have done: contribute; until you have arrived at such a point as you can say it is time to start dishing on others. I'm thinking 4,000 posts? I could be wrong, and admitting that would be setting me apart from idiots like Suspects and Caravan who, apparently, are always right.
5) When you have CONTRIBUTED, have at us other ignoramuses (ignorami?)! Won't bother me a bit. I HOPE I'll learn something. To quote myself a bit above, if Beal had told me to change something, I'd have taken it seriously.

However, this is not a "John_Updike-submitted-Something-To-A-Publisher-And-It-Was-Rejected" kind of thing. The entries of Caravan and Suspects ARE typically moronic, pointless, mindless, imbecilic, idiotic, inane, insipid and illiterate. Been there. Done that. When I was 4-years old.

Stirring the pot is fine, but, can't you at least do so with something a tad less moronic? Maybe something clever? Stirring the pot just for the sake of stirring the pot is just plain moronic, and indicates bad breeding or a liver complaint.

fasinating.
To quote the South Park Kids....
I learned something today.

Here we all are sitting on our front porches, sipping a glass of warm milk or perhaps some crazy Scotch that is made from pete moss from some bog in Scotland. Each with our own unique view and perspective of the truth. And each perspective filtered through the beliefs, prejudices, faults and fears of the individual.

Then we cast our eyes down to the screen on the laptop and expect all our internet friends on all of these different front porches to see the same view we do.

Alan... I appreciate your post. I really do. I know that from your porch, that is what you see. I don't have any special "Google Earth" type of view but I have spent some time on other members porches so I might perseve things, thru my own prejudices and beliefs, a bit differently.

I could take it another level deeper but... nuf said.

But this is very interesting.

Let me get this straight ...

A) We are required to post clips of our playing in order to qualify as legitimate members?

B) We are required to contribute something deemed "worthy" by a panel of newcomers?

Yeah, right.

So to take the thread where it ought to go....
You've all learned your John Denver songs and Neeling down Diamond songs this summer. Good

Did you write any??????????
Did you take the cool changes in those songs and make them yours with your words? Change the time, change the key, change the order but make them your songs and make them good. Did you do that yet?
Or did you just totally do something from scratch. I got one that is Killer, took me a
year to get it right. Another came together for next wed. 6 month on the music and two weeks on the words. Got a third one clanging round back there.
ENuf tyops for you Mark?
You want to hear Caravasn play or TUS pick a bit. They are on the first cds that are out there, there were 2 or3 I think. It's there hiding in plain sight.
That's the real leasson this summer.

FYI (shameless plug forthcoming) ...

The Takamine Forum CD will be coming out shortly and you can hear many of your cohorts performing original tunes over there. Some mighty good stuff if I do say so myself. Should be up for sale around Nov 1st.

Been to Germany as a Child...
Got friends from France and Poland and Yugoslavia and Russia...
They all speak a few languages fluently.
Usually one of them is English.

Like I said... Blame it on the Education System.

Well, his music is all over the internet and the OFC CD's so I guess most people have already heard it. Interesting "game".

Hopefully all of our newer members will contribute tunes to the next OFC CD (if Dave decides to do another one).

There are a number on my ning page, but they're not good enough to include on anyone's cd. At best, they're first drafts. Certainly open to review and criticism. They're also more experimental than anything.

The OFC CD's are not talent contests.

They are just a sharing of tunes by our various members and regardless of quality they are all enjoyable and fun to listen to.

If you haven't purchased the 1st couple, I think Miles or Dave might have a few available.

There have been three OFC Members CD's produced ove the last few years. My stock is sold out. Check with Miles and maybe he still has some in the OFC Store.

I'm busy right now with the CD for the Tak forum, but maybe after the holidays we can do another OFC one.

There are many members here with way more talent than I have, but I never heard anyone suggest until this weekend that talent, or even musical knowledge, was a requirement for participation. If it was, I probably wouldn't have participated and would still be stuck at the level I was when I joined--playing a couple of times a year. Don't ruin it for those of us who come here to meet some people who have similar interests and obtain a little inspiration and motivation once in awhile.
Dobro's CD arrived Friday and I told SWMBO we should find out where he's playing next year when we're in Chicago. She was surprised that I knew someone who was a "professional". I told her I hung out with a bunch of people who were way better than me. I meant that in a very broad sense. I hope it stays that way.

It would be funny if we took the sappiest song in the world, like "If I gave my Love a Cherry", and had a place on the forum to everyone to post their craziest version of it....just for grins. It would be as fun to hear Dobro's, Lanakai's, or Dweezil's as it would to hear TUS's, Gallerinski's, Beals, g8r's, or Caravan's.

Dave, with all the deaths, illness and other tragedies in the family this year and my son moving out to LA for phase 2 of his career my time has been short. I have spent more time in Texas over the last 6 months than I had prior the last 15 years.

I have the song written (and I personally love it) but have not gotten to do a decent recording of it yet.....just a scratch rhythm and vocal track.

Hopefully your sliding deadline will still be in time for me to submit. I'll do my best.

Michelle, when I found this site, I hadn't played for about 20 years and was trying to remember songs I had learned back then or learn ones I had tried back then. The board was a good resource. Stephent28's post reminded me that he sent me the only decent tab of Time In a Bottle that I had seen until that time and also turned me onto Pete Huttlinger. I now have 3 of his dvds that I still haven't mastered. I've received and dished out my share of put downs, but for the most part, this board still is a good resource in addition to the entertainment aspect.

I have so many strikes, they don't let me bat anymore. Being a Kansas State alum used to be one of the worst, until the football team finally earned a degree of respect a few years ago. Boise State's blue turf was the brunt of many jokes, but now people seem to be afraid of it.
Have I totally diverted this thread, yet?

I prefer some winter and strongly favor mountains. I really dislike humidity. The Boise winters are pretty mild, but if everyone knew that, they'd all be moving here. Too late.
I was just thinking about watching Miami play Nevada here a couple years ago. They might have done better than a 1 point win if some of those guys had ever seen snow or even a long sleeve shirt.

Not if they play the way they played Saturday. Lots of parity anymore. This strength of schedule stuff is BS in a year where one of the supposedly strongest teams gets beaten twice already but still is ranked in the top 25 and BSU drops a notch in the polls when it only beats a 1AA team by 17 points.

Your blue and orange team doesn't have blue turf, though.

The funny part is that most everyone here are Florida fans, blue and orange, but come October most of the business owners all go red and black. The reason is the Georgia fans over take the island and the game is on Saturday. If they loose they all go home Sat night. If they win they stay through Sunday night and party and spend money in town. In the end it's all about the green I guess.

Now just to bring it full circle, do you think The Usual Suspects would tell if it was a wide neck 39 or had the wuss 1 11/16 neck? They changed at mid year.

The problem with Boise State is that their schedule dosn't allow you know how good, or not so good they really are. They could be the best team in the country because they will probably go undefeated. Or put them in the SEC and they might be a .500 team. Who knows.

They had a nice win against Oregon. If they play 10 times does Oregon win 8 of them and this year happened to be one of the 2? You never know, but that's the beauty of college football.

Oregon's 0 for 2 so far. It is hard to tell, but the Pac 10, the SEC or any of the other BCS conferences aren't as dominant as they used to be. Sorry for circling back, Beal. I'm not sure US is paying attention anymore.

Most assuredly the wide neck. She would have been just another skank not worth a look otherwise.

My wish is for the Georgia team to pummel those Florida fools. I grow quite weary of all the adulation foisted on Saint Tebow.

Dave manages to come up with 3 schools that don't exist. I guess it took a shot at Oregon to get Tony away from that slothead. I was talking about Oregon's record against BSU. They couldn't use the turf excuse last year at home.
I'm with US on any of the Florida schools. I don't usually root against any team, but I get some enjoyment when anyone beats one of the three Florida schools. Football is a northern sport. They should ban it in any state where it doesn't snow.

Last year, due to injuries, we had a quarterback who hadn't taken a snap since his freshman year IN HIGH SCHOOL...another example of coaches that don't plan ahead and work their stable. Frankly, about time he became the AD...

Up at 3:30AM. I got picked for jury duty which starts at 10AM so I've got to get in as full a days work as possible (minus some OFC posts) before heading for the court. Dispite what they say about civic duty, it's not like your employeer actually gives you any time off to serve.

This year we (Syracuse University) RECRUITED a guy who had just played four years of hoop (sure, it was under Coach K @ Duke but still...) and hadn't taken a snap in four years. He was a former high school player of the year and set local qb records and was recruited for both hoop and football. He chose hoops at Duke and had another year of eligibility so he came here to play qb and teach the young guys. Perfect situation - we're rebuilding anyway.

Football is a northern sport.

Yeah right.

Down south here it's a religion.

Keep in mind I am an atheist on these matters.

You didn't grow up in Wisconsin in the 50s and 60s. There were Packer fans...and everyone else was just going to hell.

Heck, I still don't understand why there are Hockey teams in Florida, Pheonix, and Nashville. No one goes to the games.

In Vancouver the local team has lost something like four straight games so far this season, yet they sell out every game for the past 4 years!

Out here we're just Thugs. We're Raiders fans. More like a social disease than a religion.

Weaser ... if you're rebuilding, I know a HS QB who is getting looked at by D1 and D1-AA programs. Tell your recruiting team to look way west. The kid would make his old man real happy by bringing home the scholarship offers. ;)

Another thread that started out innocently enough with a story about a guitar. And turned into 8 pages of "uh huh" and "yeppers". If you are really that bored with the site... don't let the cyber door hitya, where the good lord split-ya...

I really don't care at this point.

And in the voice of Carly Simon wrote...

You probably think this post is about YOU? don't you?
