Location: GATLINBURG TENNESSEE :) | The fret buzz post reminded me of this other annoyance I have experienced...
On my Adamas II the low E string doesn't seem to ring out like the others. It seems to be slightly dead sounding, like it is very lightly dampened. I can't see anything obvious on the nut and I have put a new saddle on the guitar. Any Ideas as to what's going on? |

I have the same problem with my OFC II right now. Just cropped up a few weeks ago. It's not the case with any of my other 2080's, so I'm waiting to see what happens when I change the strings before I panic.
I'm eagerly awaiting the response of those more knowledgeable than I on this! MWoody, Al, Beal...you guys HAVE to know what's going on here. |

Location: closely held secret | Alison, that's not a very helpful post. I thought we were supposed to help or stay quiet?
Vince (and Alan), I've had that happen to me before, and it's always been one of two things (not to say there couldn't be other causes).
Either my string was just dead (yes, it happens with new, out of the package strings sometimes), or the nut was cut too deep, cut too narrow, or the bottom of the cut was angled the wrong way, allowing the sides of the cut to 'mute' the string. |

Are there shims under there? (I made you say 'underwear' :p )
I had it happen to me that the shim did not properly support a saddle.
I noticed it more when it was plugged-in, but that was my problem. I made new shims.
But first, I would just try another string.

Location: South of most, North of few | I believe John and Richard nailed it. If it only happens when played open, it could be the nut is cut with a slight backward angle, that is taller at the tuner end than the fretboard end, the string will be dampened slightly. Sounds kind of like after you wipe the strings off with a rag, and a bit of fuzz ends up stuck to the string. I had this issue with an 06 collector, and the factory put a new nut on it to solve the problem. You may be able to file it to make it right if there's enough meat left. |

Location: GATLINBURG TENNESSEE :) | Ahhh ... I DID notice when upgrading my electronics that the(under saddle)shim had an extra piece of shim (about a half inch) glued on to the lower end side. That MAY be the culprit, as it could have created a weak-contact point under that area of the saddle. I have extra shims, so I guess I'll need to pull the strings and the current shim and try something different.
(btw, it does happen whether fretted or unfretted)
