Song -- I'd most want to see them play live: "Don't Let Me Down" (and lady sb thinks this is the sexiest rock song ever made ;) )
Song -- I most appreciate for using the studio and turning the world on its ear: "I am the Walrus"
Album -- For putting on the Sennheisers, closing my eyes and listening: Side 2 of Abbey Road
Album -- For singing along with: Side 1 of Meet the Beatles
You're right wannabee ... there's always another one that's better. |

"And Your Bird Can Sing" just came to mind, but I sure can't play it. But it is an oldie with a cool guitar riff. Of course it is only 2:45 long cuz it was the sixties. "Day Tripper", "Drive My Car", "Paperback Writer"...
Oh, my age is showing (again) |

with that reverberating harmonica riff that John was so good at putting into just the right part of the song and I start thinking that was their best stuff. How about I Should of Known Better , I just love that simple harmonica stuff that seems to take the songs up to another level.

I do like Abbey Road, but I enjoy playing older songs such as You've got to hide your love away, I have seen a face and All I wanna do. They come out nice in acoustics.

On the other hand, "Have You Met the Real Mary Jane?" had to be the biggest waste of studio time. |

My favorite album will be Abbey Road which IMO, contrary to a lotta critics(experts), is the best album ever, period. But Rubber Soul sure is good, too. All in all, I really love all their stuff, early to late. Can ya tell?

For those of you in the band that don't know what we're doing, . . . this is that "A minor" . . . but it's not Standard Blues Changes . . .
Wasn't that the "extra disc" that came with "SomeTime in NewYork"?? |

Actually, I think more of the fact that I grew up under an environment of Elvis, Buddy Holly, Big Bopper as well as 40's period swing-big band music. The Beatles and later British music was just not something that played in the house...period!

Then came the Motown sound my cousin down the street was into and it wasn't until I was at least 12 or 13 before I even heard of the Beatles. By that time ('72 or so), it was pretty much over. |

Best Beatle album would be Abby Road.

Song - My favorite: "Don't Let Me Down"

Song - Covered by the Grateful Dead on some concert tape I heard on Lone Star Dead: "It's All Too Much"
Album - My favorite: "Hey Jude" (of which the two first songs listed are on!)
Album - First LP I bought with my own hard earned cash: "Abbey Road" (my two brothers and I had pooled money to by our first LP several years before: "Herman's Hermits Greatest Hits"! ;) )
I realized at some point in time most of my favorite Beatles somgs are George Harrison penned ones...

There is far to much varied types of material to choose from but I'll say that Abbey Road is an almost perfect album.
I don't see how you can "in general" dislike the Beatles. Maybe it's a generational thing. I do remember a time in the early to mid-seventies when being a Beatle fan was uncool.
But just look and the depth and width of their catalog all done mostly done while they were in their early twentys. Early twentys!
Imagine yourself writing a "Something", or "Nowhere Man", or "Imagine" at that age. |

They were the perfect BAND, great songs, great singers, great instrumentalists, great production and arrangements... So many others with 0.000000000001% of their talent have been hugely succesful. |

I just was listening to (what I consider) much better music at the time. I already mentioned this in another thread. John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers made the Beatles sound like bubblegum. I DO however have to say that Ringo was pretty good in 200 Motels. (The Frank Zappa movie.) |

I was quick to choose Beatles, but then I started thinking about all the McCartney solo and Wings stuff. I'm not so sure anymore.
To me, the impact of the Beatles was that they were first, unique and really had no competition at least in the early days. That's of course a hell of an accomplishment. McCartney post-Beatles on the other hand had to live up to a huge expectation and do it against a wide array of competing writers and performers. Sure there was the occasional "Ebony and Ivory", but looking through his catalog I might tend to favor it over the Fab 4.

What staying power for a band.

With The Beatles
Rubber Soul
Sgt Pepper
Abbey Road
Each represent a major shift in the band's evolution.
There are also certain songs that are favorites such as If I Fell, I Don't Want To Spoil The Party, No Reply, I Will, etc.
But my favorite Beatles song will always be I Saw Her Standing There. If you crank that song, it is sheer joy from the opening count-in to the final ringing E7 chord. |

I'm with you on those three and the reasoning. Earlier I said "Rubber Soul" which still holds true. But these would be the ones that I'd grab for my greatest listening enjoyment.
I will say that some of their subsequent material have some very sophisticated arrangements that are remarkable. But album wise, "RS" for me!
There are too many favorite songs for me to select just one... |
