Location: Right now? | I am a HUGE fan of Paul Siebel who I think sells eggs somewhere in Philadelphia now. How very sad for such an under-rated incredible song writer. I don't think some of you youngin's will know who he is, but anyway, this is the closet rendition of Siebel's version I've heard and I really enjoyed it. I just taught myself this on the guitar, and I LOVE and play the autoharp (don't LAUGH!), too. I think some of you guys will really like it, and no, that is NOT me playing!

Location: Texas | That is a really great song and a very nice version. (…and I won't laugh, I'd actually like to get an autoharp one of these days… it'd be great fun for playing Lovin' Spoonful songs and old folk songs.)

Now you really struck a chord with me (pun intended!) I know that song from the (pre-Buckingham-Nicks, Bob Welch-era) Fleetwood Mac version. I thought that "Mystery To Me" was a great album, and that "Why" was one of the best songs Christine McVie ever wrote/sung. It is sooo heart-wrenchingly honest and her pain is so up-front and believable. Great, great song, and Kathleen Johnson does a very nice version…

Looking at all the dust under the 36 strings and the darkening of the exposed part of the strings, I'd say these are the origs. It's at least 10 yo and still has impressive sustain. So I'd think you wouldn't need to change 'em very often. |

Location: Right now? | I think I have over a dozen autoharps and the only one I really want to change the strings on is a very, very vintage Oscar Schmidt Festival model. The strings last practically forever, if you ask me.
If my Festival model was a guitar, it would be the equivalent of one of the best Martins out there. There's no comparison to the newer ones or even some of the older ones.
Iffy, did you say sustain? This thing, with God knows how old strings on it,still 'rings' for what seems like two minutes after I put it down. It's a treasure. I'll post a photo later ... ;) You can see a few of mine on my autoharp ning site; Look for the slide show at the bottom of my page here:
