No offense, and I'm sorry he died, but I could never stand him. Even as a kid I thought his show was just stupid, not funny. But, he DID bring a lot of smiles to some people, so I guess you could call it a life well lived.

Read the Story...

Uh? So did Soupy play geeetar? I only remember seeing him on things like Hollywood Squares, Roasts, and other shows where 'stars' stroke each other.
But my Great-Aunt Alma thought he was funny!

White Fang, Black Tooth, Pookie… that was really a very weird show for impressionable young minds.

Those old shows had a resurgence of new fans every few years on college campuses for quite a while too. (insert punch line here)

And it is not totally off-topic, since his sons were musicians who played with lots of well-known acts, including Todd Rundgren on the "Runt" LPs…

RIP Soupy…

Was that his sons that had a band? I think they play with David Bowie for a while.

Yes, Hunt and/or Tony Sales played with Todd Rundgren, David Bowie (Tin Machine,) Iggy Pop and Paris (Bob Welch's band after he left Fleetwood Mac) and probably others.

Hate to rip on a dead guy but he was big on TV when I was young and then on radio in my teens and I thought the guy was a total ass wipe. Doesn't mean I'm glad he's dead, just means that I'll miss him about zero. Sorry, just my opinion.

And in his final hours they played:

"Hang on Soupy, Soupy hang on..."

He blazed a lot of early media trails. Taught some people how to get out of an over binding contract!

The very first time I was in a "real" recording studio to cut a demo with a band, Soupy Sales had just been there to record a promo for his show.

"Wow," I remember thinking, "now THIS is the big time!"

For me he was like all comics.
I found some of his antics hilarious and some not so much.

I don't have anything bad to say about Soupy Sales. But, I liked Flip Wilson better.

Well, he DID act stupid, but that's what made him funny ... he used to get in trouble sometimes for his double entendres.
